  • Join PetrolRevolt’s Mike in this interview with Lembit Opik and Ian Churchlow of the Motorcycle Action Group.
Former MP Lembit Öpik is renowned for his ‘full-on’ approach to all he does. Now he’s channelling his irrepressible drive to protect and promote two core passions: Liberty and Motorcycling.
There are arguably many challenges to the freedoms Motorcyclists take for granted theses days, not just the looming ban on internal combustion engines.
Measures such as ULEZ, Low traffic neighbourhoods, potential road charging, and many other tweaks to transportation policy.
Motorcycle Action Group argues that Motorcycles should be forming part of the solution to some of the modern day traffic problems.
Motorcycles emit less emissions than cars and if there were greater take up of Motorcycle journeys, the Motorcycle would help to reduce both congestion, emissions and fuel consumption.
However, motorcycles are combined with cars and do not form part of a local Council’s ‘active travel’ policy, yet worse, Motorcycles are also combined with cars in the broader decarbonisation strategy. At the same time, many argue that Electric Motorcycles in their current form, do not meet the needs of the Motorcyclist for usages such as long distance journeys.
Motorcycle Action Group campaigns on behalf of Motorcyclist’s to keep Motorcycling freedoms alive.
Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) is a volunteer led riders’ rights organisation that has been building in strength and diversity since it began in 1973. MAG campaigns to protect and promote motorcycling and the interests and rights of all riders, from learner to advanced. We celebrate biking and the freedoms and independence it provides, through our support of parties and rallies, sport and competition, touring and travel.
The Motorcycle Action Group is the representative voice of riders in Local and National government and passionately defends all that is good about biking, mobilising riders through a local and regional branch structure.
MAG is not aligned to ANY political party or ideology, our independance makes it possible for politicians and officials to work with us knowing that we do not have a party-political agenda.
MAG membership is drawn from across the whole spectrum of motorcycling. Whatever you ride MAG has something for you.
MAG can, and does make a difference. We work directly with politicians and civil servants, but still employ other forms of direct action if necessary to ensure the rider’s voice is heard.
Since our humble beginnings over 40 years ago, we have matured significantly and are respected for our responsible, objective, informed contributions which enrich the political debate.
Throughout this evolution MAG has remained faithful to its core principles of freedom of choice and self - determination and the mantra “Education not legislation”.

I am aged 86, and I have been riding motorcycles since I was aged 15, and still do as does my (younger) wife. My wife's idea of a ride out on a nice day is usually in the region of 150 to 200 miles, making an electric bike impractical. Another problem with battery powered bikes is. To achieve a modest range, the battery is going to be heavy, and for an older or smaller person a heavy bike can represent a challenge. Apart from this, I don't bloody want one! We fought two world wars to keep our freedom, woe betide any political party who tries to take it off us!!!

She went on to say 'the UK government do not see electric vehicles as the solution, they see them purely as a stop gap measure until their Autonomous Electric Vehicle Scheme comes online'.. My only problem is, I was riding bikes in 73 when the helmet law was thrust on us without any real consultation. MAG didn't back up those jailed for exercising their freedoms. I do not know too many people who have two strokes in Canada other than dirt bikers. Electric is great when homes are designed to be off grid…solar charging, but that goes against profit making by corporations. Pretty simple….don’t ban petrol and gas motor bikes. Point you can not control society when society has the ability to travel anywhere and any time. Sadly the politicians we elect are working for the WEF not the citizens who elect them. What is a joke in Canada is that the government is trying to make the cycle bike cities, but the WEF forgets we can not ride bikes for 4 to 6 months of the year due to cold and snow. I don’t see our prime minister cycling to work in minus 30 with snow on the ground.

While motorcyclists treat motorcycles as weekend & track day toys , no government is going to treat them as serious transport or see them as the answer to alleviating congestion . All bikers should ask all candidates in elections ,what do they intend to do for us motorcyclists & put them on the spot . I bet they don’t even give us bikers a second thought until they are voting to restrict us even further . Like the motorcycle media & insurance companies & fair weather weekend bikers ,they see motorcycles as playthings . Also if governments want to ban petrol motorcycles ,they should compensate us fully ,for all motorcycles & moneys we have invested & spent on them ,plus compo for the grief suffered at their loss & having to suffer crap alternatives like electric .

I've worked as a Blood Runner/ Medical Courier on a 600cc bike. Could not have done this job without a bike licence obviously. I was in my early 50's when I did this. While I enjoyed this, my happiest days were on my Honda 125CDT, the 125 superdream. It was simple, comfortable and took me from south london down to the coast and back on £5 worth of fuel, abit back then. The cost of doing your licence since those days has only gotten more expensive and difficult, and no doubt will only get more expensive the longer it is left to achieve. If your interested in doing your licence, do it sooner than later is cheapest. The fun you have on your bike does not depend on the capacity of the bike, to a degree, they are inverse. Running a 600cc bike was as expensive as running a small car. Not so of a 125. A 250cc bike I would like by compromise. Get yourself the book/ video from Amazon - The Police Guide to Advanced Motorcycling. Read it until you know it backwards and inside out. Police bikers do not have accidents - be one of those statistics. Watch the advanced bike riding channels on RUclips. You''ll regret more in life what you did not do than what you did, so it is said. Buy second hand biking clothing. Don't get mugged for your life savings on buying a helmet. Get going, go today, enjoy your life and do it safely first.

Again I think the legality of all this ULEZ nonsense needs to be questioned! When a car or motorcycle is three years old it has to pass a test known as the MOT. Part of this test is to see if your vehicle is compliant in its emissions to be used on the roads in this Country! I think this ULEZ is another form of tax used by Councils that are overstepping their remit as a cash cow to rip of the general public!!

The legality of ULEZ is fine, its been through courts and all sorts. The MOT can only test the vehicle to the standards of its generation. Older vehicles are tested to different emission standards because otherwise, they would all fail. The same with lights and seatbelts for example. Regardless, MOT emissions on petrol vehicles doesn't check for the carcinogenic gases, it checks oxygen levels and carbon monoxide to make sure your engine is running properly (not too rich/lean, not misfiring). ULEZ is there to reduce the amount of carcinogenic gases in the air in city centres because its making people poorly, its not a cash cow... believe it or not its for your own good. ULEZ wont affect the huge majority of bike riders, most motorbikes are newer than 2003.

I'm from the continent and I ride and drive old vehicles and I love it. But... times are, as always, changing. If you read government plans from all over the western world it is not just about moving to EVs, it is about minimizing personal transport. The plan is not to swap ICE for EV 1 on 1. That is the most important aspect. And, let's be honest, it is mostly old folks (I'm in my 70s) who are against this. Personally I'm not against EVs but they lack character. Then again if I need to go electric to be able to ride/drive, so be it. After all, the steam engine also died... And you can always keep an ICE bike as a true historic vehicle...

Until politics took over, environmental impact forecasting was only possible for small 'closed loop' technological processes. But soon it became clear that all 'open&international' processes are politically skewed. CO2 emissions, energy consumption related to their impact are mere models with large variances in their tolerances, impossible to correlate directly to one cause&effect. No (scientific) consensus can be provided which processes are best to prioritize. Just assuming 'recreational use of fossil fuel' is a(or the) bad ass, is admitting incompetence as well as short sightness into solving poluting factors detrimental to the environment. The environment is used as 'the threat' to restrict 'ordinary humans' in two of their fundamental freedoms; mobility & information. Vehicle-less cities is oke but don't bring ill construed arguments, like EVs, clean air zoning etc. into the equations.

The Geet system is a way of converting the liquid fuel into a gaseous/plasma that then produces a fuller explosion and more effective use of the fuel! It was developed by Paul Pantone in the USA 20+ years ago! The petrol companies spent millions on getting him banned and imprisoned as it would effect their profits! If you could get up to 200 mpg that would cut emissions by over 200%! the kit is available as a set of plans from the internet at a very small fee! As are a number of RUclips videos!

Our challenge is the aging population of motorcyclists, young people today are falling into the trap of the globalists and the eco-extremists because not only are they not taking up motorcycling, but larger and larger numbers are not having personal transport of any type..

@@gitanonumero1983 You're absolutely correct, times are hard at the moment (even harder than they were when I first posted my comment 5 months ago..) but motorcycling really doesn't have to cost a fortune..
Yes, there's lots of flashy gear out there for the kit-freaks who would have you believe that it's a waste of time buying anything less than a brand new top-end sports bike or ADV costing £20,000+, an £800 Arai helmet and a £2000 Rukka riding suit, but equally there's plenty of good, solid gear that is perfectly safe is out there at a massively lower cost.. Of course there's nothing to be done about the stupidly high cost of getting a full license, but if you do the modular version you can spread the cost over time.
Obviously if you've got a family a car would be more appropriate, but that route is also far from cheap, it can very easily cost £1000 now to pass a car test too, then there's £2000 to £4000 for an OK small car with expensive insurance on top, especially if you happen to pick the wrong car..
Of course you could start with a CBT and a good used 125CC instead and gradually save what you can afford as time passes to pay for your full test. There's no need to spend a fortune on a used Japanese 125cc, there are plenty of used bikes from the better Chinese-made brands like AJS, Mash and Herald which are fine if maintained properly and can be picked-up for £1000 or so if you shop around and cost next to nothing to run, then at least you're on the road, you've achieved personal mobility, which literally broadens your horizons immediately, you can look for a better job further afield (especially important if you don't live in a city with abundant and regular public transport) and you can still ride the bike for leisure when you're not working..
Some rural councils even operate 'Ride-to-Work' schemes where young people can take a reduced-cost CBT and even rent and insure a 125cc bike or scooter for a financially manageable monthly charge, again, you can ride the bike/scooter to work but you can usually have it for leisure purposes too if you can afford to pay a bit extra on top of the standard charge..

I didn't know it was that bad. my grandpa died on a motorcycle probly cuz he was drunk so I wasn't interested in getting one as an adult. But I had loads of fun as a kid on a dirt bike. I'm not a fan of electric cuz I know how toxic they are when they burn. Ive been interested in engines running on water as fuel since I heard it in a song from a band I like. I realized later that it's called hydrogen. I always figured that miles per gallon with gasoline would get better and better.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿In Scotland, Can we do away with the Speed Limit out of town please.
Ok ,have every built up area a 20mph zone, with main arteries at 40mph. But all national speed limit roads make them limitless. This will encourage tourism from Europe. And vehicles are more than 60% better than when those old limits were written.
If you can't do that ,can people be allowed to learn on a 250cc if they are over a certain weight.
    Thank you.

Parking a motorcycle should be easy but is often a lot harder than parking a car, because cars have designated parking spaces, motorcycles should but often it's difficult to find parking for a motorcycle.
He may say you can find parking easier but often finding legal parking is not that easy anymore, places you think you can park may get you a parking ticket now all done by camera.

Motorcycles are more environment friendly than cars, most people use cars to go on journeys less than 3 or 4 miles why not use a 125cc bike? So much more environment friendly.. faster journey and enjoyable.
It's not just the exhaust emissions, mpg, its also the materials used to manufacture them

I think motorcycle manufacturers should do more. Mixing a electric motor and a turbocharger with a 100+cc engine should be a thing by now.

Was it mentioned it is possible to get an exemption from the ULEZ if your (older) bike passes an emissions test. The only problem is there’s only one garage licensed to issue these certificates (in east london) and it costs about £250 a pop. You’d be surprised which bikes actually produce minimal NOx emissions. The downside, apart from the one garage monopoly & cost, is that, say a Hyabusa on a T plate may have passed previously, it doesn’t mean all Hyabusas are exempt: every bike requires an individual exemption.
If i was still commuting into town i would try for an exemption but i avoid london at all costs these days, even to the point of refusing work.

    • @John-ob7dh
      @John-ob7dh Год назад

No there is another garage as well .They get your Nox level down to 0.15 NOX.
