      hey just camed from ep 3 going into 4, aaaand, idk if this got explained to you guys or not, but when it comes to the names of the alchimists in this show, well that's what they are they are, they are nicknames, so no need to take every single one of them as litterly as you do, with the exception of mustang's, the nicknames are for the most part just something that sounded rly cool, that the author liked to add to all the characters that are state alchimists

    While the last episode was showing religion taken to the extreme, this episode shows the same for science. Shou Tucker was so obsessed with the fact that he had to stay a State Alchemist that he was willing to sacrifice his wife, daughter and dog for it. He didn't feel any regret at all and even bragged about what he did.

    • @zuralani1
      @zuralani1 2 года назад +110

      Like the person before me said, the 2003 series was much more than one episode to grow attached to the characters. While the 2003 FMA did branch off from the manga (because it wasn't finished yet), the earlier episodes are still accurate. Because they figured most people watching Brotherhood would have seen FMA, the overlapping early parts were done at a quicker pace so they could get to the new content. That's why some people suggest watching FMA up to a certain episode and then swapping over to Brotherhood.

    I’m very rarely a “the book was better” kind of person, but in the manga, Tucker wasn’t immediately played up to be all that creepy. He came across as just a single father stressed from work. It made the punch from what he did feel so much worse because it came out of nowhere rather than in the show where the music and his voice make you pretty sus of him from the jump.

    • @ShadowSkyX
      @ShadowSkyX 2 года назад +59

      2003 had 2 or 3 episodes of buildup before Nina dropped hints what her father told her vs what he admitted to them didn't quite match up or feel right. Lying to her because she's little, fine, as it was the supposed truth that her mother left them would devastate her as is. but in his mind it was better she start disliking her mother the longer her letters didn't get answered so she would ask less questions. But truthfully, it was only a matter of time before Nina asked the right questions and the web of lies to keep her in the dark fell apart.

Tucker starts going on again, and Al cuts him off saying "If you don't shut up, this time I'll be the one to snap." There is one thing I think you're missing when you're talking about them trying to bring back their mom and in talking about living human transmutation. The law of equivalent exchange was so much more taxing with their mother because of the quantification of the soul, not the body. Where a living being is intact already and transmuting it may be wrong, but ultimately the law doesn't require sacrifice like what is needed with a soul.

This and one other moment you have yet to see are powerful here, but I do think they're more impactful in the original, as a little more time is spent with the characters and stories in the original show.
    I do highly recommend watching that version as well some day, even if you just watch it on your own.

      Yeah. This was a quick intro, but in 03 you had multiple episodes with the Tucker family. Shou was a wise and helpful guide. Nina and Alexander were a source of much needed comfort for the boys.
      It wasn't just bad because of how ghoulish it is. You _thought those characters were going to be around_

  • @Kaempfdog
    @Kaempfdog 2 года назад +26

    This episode…isn’t just a brief trauma moment. You will have full blown PTSD of this depending on how you empathize. There are memes of people laughing when they put wigs on dogs. And FMA fans just go into meltdown mode by the memory. It’s HORRIFIC.
    What Shou Tucker did was actually not human transmutation. Because what the brothers did was try to bring something that no longer existed back. There was no fair equivalent so a BUNCH of complicated facets all occurred at once. At the end of the day, the brother’s sacrifice does still average them out to normal people. (Mainly because despite their genius and abilities, they are both traumatized to the core) Also what they lose is often something they took for granted with their decision. Their initial desire was completely squashed. But what they want back is particularly what they took for granted and lost for their sacrifice.
    Nina and Alexander on the other hand were both alive, and their same chemical makeup was used to fuse the two of them. What you say about averaging the intelligence and other aspects does make sense. It’s like finding the mean of a set of numbers. You add it all up and divide by the amount of numbers to get the average. But when you do that, without the EXACT set of numbers, you can’t exactly know what numbers went into the average. And putting it in terms of a child and a dog is WAY more screwed up. Because Tucker didn’t even pay a price for it and that’s why he was perfectly ok with doing it AGAIN. He did ABSOLUTELY deserve to go straight to hell. FMA 03…actually took an even darker approach. This episode was a full arc.
    Also…as terrible as it is that Nina died, I’m happy she did now. I know the context that a chimera is actually in CONSTANT torturous pain like Nina’s form and the lion reptile bird from the last episode. And Nina being a child, was MUCH more oblivious to it all compared to the wife Chimera which starved itself as the fastest way to put itself down.
    And finally we got the murderer. What he did was kinda complex to say, but I’ll just say what happens to his victims. They are blown inside out. The blood in that guy’s body was pressurized to the point of exploding out of every containment in his body bursting from the skin. An instantaneous death, but BRUTAL to look at. It’s like the ultimate stroke. There’s even more details but that’ll be relevant later.

    While FMA:B follows the manga closely, the 2003 FMA branched off at a certain point since the manga wasn't finished. That being said, the earlier plot lines were still accurate. Rather than making an exact copy of the first couple dozen episodes, Brotherhood shortened a lot of the early stuff. If you thought having this all in one episode was bad, imagine having several episodes to grow attached to the characters.

    • @m00nd0ggie13
      @m00nd0ggie13 2 года назад +8

      I really wish people who watch FMA:B will check out at least a few of the iconic episodes of 2003 FMA. That scene with Cornello and Rose and Ed ripping off his jacket to show off his arm is much more dramatic. And that's not the only scene that has more intensity in the 2003 version. It's important bc these encounters stay with the Elric brothers throughout their journey and while we can see why in FMA:B I think FMA had more emotional depth.

    • @elheber

      The best order to watch FMA is to watch the original show up to any episode before it begins to deviate from the manga, then transfer over to Brotherhood to continue from there.

    • @astemirabazekhov9005
      @astemirabazekhov9005 2 года назад +2

      Stop spreading misinformation. The Brotherhood didn't cut the first 12 episodes in any way. All they missed was the chapter with the train and the Yoki. In all other respects, FMAB practically follows the manga frame by frame. Especially in episode 4.
      The excellent quality of the episodes of FMA 03 that cover the manga is solely the merit of the writers of FMA 03. If we compare the beginning of the manga and FMA 03, then the manga is as clumsy as the episodes of FMAB, except that the manga is a medium where such a slightly fragmentary pace is justified and organic.

    The term is transmute, not transmutate. Also, when they talk about the "laws" of alchemy, they are talking about scientific/natural laws, like gravity, not societal laws. Human transmutation isn't a taboo because it's not "allowed", it's because it violates those natural laws and thus the attempt itself always has negative results, like what happened to Ed and Al.
    Ed didn't say there is no god, he said "WE are not gods", referring to alchemists.

  • @rumfordc
    @rumfordc 2 года назад +6

    Your body is not "you" and that's why an alchemist can change their body without violating equivalent exchange. The soul specifically is what is outside of the alchemist's control. The word "Alchemy" had very real application in the distant past. Ancient Egypt was called "Khem" and they had a "study of change" which came to be called Alchemy. Alchemy was a universal science of sorts that included material, mental, and spiritual change. Over time we've become increasingly materialistic and so only the material connotations (turning low matter, like lead, into higher matter, like gold) are recognized. This materialist subset became what we now call Chemistry but Psychiatry, for example, would also qualify as a form of alchemy. Obviously it's not like what is portrayed in the show but hopefully it explains the inspiration behind it to an extent.

    Episode 3 explained what evil emerges through religious dogma and Ed and Al are seen as the voices of science and logic when they exposed the priest. In this episode that dynamic is flipped by Tuckers horrifically clinical and morally bankrupted acts against his own family all in the name of science and "Human progression." these 2 episodes are displaying both extremes of faith and logic. Fervent blind faith will lead to people off a cliff and cold logic has no concept of morality or emotion, allowing terrible deeds to be committed all in the name of knowledge and "progression".
    what I think the show was telling us last Episode is:" it's ok to believe in something, but make sure it is logical and obtainable." and in this Episode I think it's message is something like " it is wise to peruse knowledge for humanity, just make sure you don't lose what makes you human." Father Cornello used the emotions and the stone to make them believe a falsehood in order to fulfill his agenda. Shou Tucker used his family ( his closets test subjects) to continue his research in Bio-Alchemy so he could contribute to science without any remorse or regret. Even worse, he tries to justify his actions by comparing his own human transmutations with Edward's showing Tucker is capable of mental manipulation. If he was willing to do this to his own flesh and blood, I don't want to even think about what he would have continued without Ed and Al's intervention. Man this stuff was so traumatizing watching this when I was 10.

    Death Note (DN) would also provide lots of opportunities to analyze and talk about. I’m glad Demon Slayer (DS) didn’t win the vote. Its story style is very straightforward, and there’s really not much to talk about its episodes as compared to FMA or DN. _(And for DS, Zenitsu’s and Inosuke’s constant over-the-top yelling and exaggerated over-expressive screaming dialogs personally gets tiring after some time)._
