In the manga, the guy who kills Shou Tucker and Nina at the end walks away saying "God hear me... Two souls have been returned to you". He doesn't say "human souls". In the manga, at the end of every chapter the author puts a small doodle of every person who died on that chapter (no matter who) with angel wings flying up to heaven, even if they are bad and/or villains. In this specific case (and only in this case) she draws Nina and Alexander flying up while Shou Tucker is falling down to hell.

The other Chimera in Tucker's lab aren't people, just fusions of animals. He used a human cause he wanted the talking aspect, which you can only get from humans.
That said, a man abducting people off the street for alchemical experiments to make chimeras would make a *great* premise for a horror story.

Episode 3 and Episode 4 are actually thematically linked. Episode 3 is about the shortcomings of faith in religion, Episode 4 is about the shortcomings of faith in science. Shou is not wrong in his actions if you look at it in terms of alchemy, the only goal alchemists have is the pursuit of knowledge (truth), and if that principle is held up with no other restrictions, what Tucker did was permissible. The theme of religion v. science runs throughout the entire show.

Welcome to the community. We all hurt here.
This is one of the hardest hitting episodes in, not just this series, but in all of anime. I've seen it countless times, and it brings me to tears every time. Trust me, you're not alone.
The original series played it slightly differently, giving you a longer time to get attached to Nina, and ratcheting up the tension a bit slower, so both Ed and the audience knew at the end what was about to happen.
Tucker's speech to Ed at the end was also slightly different, with one of the most irredeemable lines tossed in. Instead of him looking crazy as he did here, he responds more coldly. When Alphonse asks him why he did it, if staying a state alchemist was so he could provide for his family, what was the point in destroying his family to do it.
    Tucker's response is haunting.
Shou: [Sighs] I hate prodigies like you Ed. Too damn perceptive.[Edward throws Tucker against a wall.]
    Alphonse: [Surprised] Brother!
Edward: This guy used his own wife, Al!
    Alphonse: A-and this time?
Edward: HIS DAUGHTER!....and his dog! He transmuted them into that...THING! An easy process when you use people, right?!
Shou: Why are you getting so upset, Edward? It's the nature of scientific progress: animal testing, experimentation, trial and error! All advancements have -- a price.
Edward: SHUT UP! I'm not gonna let you rationalize this, you monster! That was your own family, damn it! You've been toying with people's LIVES!
Shou: Toying with lives? What?! Like your arm and leg there? Or your brother's body? Or trying to bring your mother back? That's toying, isn't it? You don't really think you are any different from me, do you, Ed? [Edward punches Tucker, sending him to the ground. Tucker chuckles. Edward prepares to punch him again but is stopped by Alphonse.]
Alphonse: Why, Mr. Tucker? The whole point was to pass the assessment and continue your way of life. But now your family's gone. What life is left?!
Shou: That's the funny thing, I didn't have a reason. I fully understood, no matter what I did, my life would be ruined. I could either do it with the science, or without. And so I chose science, to see if I could.
    Edward: What kind of man...?
Shou: When you have the power to do something, it's hard not to try. Isn't that what we agreed on, Ed? Aren't we so much alike?
    Edward: NO!
Shou: Sure...part of me did it for respect and this house. Just as you partly did it for your mother. But there's more. You're desperate to put your mind to use, Ed. To see what you're capable of, to put the world under your fingers...that's the essence of alchemy. You did it for knowledge...control. Above all, you did it just to prove you can. [Edward punches Tucker again]
Edward: You're wrong. Alchemy isn't meant to be... I'm not like you! [Edward repeatedly punches Tucker.] I'M NOT! NOT! I'M NOT!
    Alphonse: Brother, you'll kill him!

This was even more of a gut punch in the original anime. They stretched out this story to two full episodes to both help you fall in love with Nina and Alexander and to cause you to lower your guard to Shou Tucker as they weren't anywhere close to as overt with his intentions as they were here which made the reveal significantly more impactful. The OG Fullmetal Alchemist anime is worth a watch for those episodes alone if nothing else.

Yeah, I feel like FMA:B kind of assumes that anybody watching it has already seen alteast the first 25 episodes of FMA; it really rushes through that part of the story; sometimes by cutting out pointless filler, but just as often by cutting out valuable character and world building and by condensing down the plot in a way that ruins the suspense. Tbh it's only really after FMA:B gets to the point that FMA diverged from the manga that it gets really good

I remember when the first FMA series (the one from 2003) came to my country, on a new TV channel dedicated exclusively to anime. At that time, I had a group of friends with whom we used to get together at a local comic book store to talk about series and stuff. The day after the Nina and Alexander episode aired (I think the 2003 series made it even MORE emotionally destructive), there wasn't ONE person in the place who wasn't depressed.

I think these two are officially ensnared by the story. I look forward to seeing their reactions to the multitude of phenomenal story beats coming down the line. They certainly picked one of the best shows to sink their teeth into.

Everything until the "raining" scene is kinda done better in the original, because Brotherhood speeds through it. (trying not to spoil anything) But yeah, this whole thing sticks with you. It's still to this day like in the top 3 most messed up things I've seen in anime.

The extremes of science. The Linore episode was about the extremes of religion. The author is a genius.

Also just to make crystal clear, Roy's comment on not being better than Shou Tucker was self-deprecating, not sympathy or endorsement.

This anime is insanely dark. If it wasn't for the light-hearted cartoony moments, this show would be so much darker 😅

this is even worse when you consider that like 3 episodes later we learn that human chimeras exist already...

This was more shocking and creepy in the original. I've never had that kind of tears come out of my eyes before or after. Maybe it was because it was the first time I saw it, maybe it was because I was young enough that I didn't realise what was going on until I heard the voice of the chimera, but it was actually horrifying... and I'm the kind of person who doesn't understand why people like horror movies because the barely effect me.

This is the major storyline I preferred from the original anime. You spend more time with the Tuckers and Shou is not so bombastically creepy. Plus you've seen so many other corrupt alchemists and psychos that Shou comes of normal that you might not suspect what he's about to do.

watching this for the first time hurt... now I'm sadistic watching other reactions to it. (and seeing jokes made of it)

The Japanese-language voice actor (for the father) sounded just like that, a warm and loving man. It make the reveal so shocking at the end. Not caring for the English voice acting for this one.

If you think about how complicated and constantly in flux biological creatures are, it's no wonder achieving equivalent exchange in bioalchemy is so difficult. Would also explain why it is impossible to unfuse and reassemble them how they were.

Idk if it's a US thing or what to assume that we(males) do nothing around the house or any chores? Here in my country(Hungary) but in many other European countries it's pretty common for boys to being raised with basic things, well, nowadays some kids get some pocket money for it as a motivation but yea. Even in many Asian countries it's taught even in schools, kindergarten/preschool, elementary, middle school, (high school where high schools are a thing as for most countries to my knowledge elementary is 1 to 8 and then middle-school 9-12/13 then University, well just cleaning together in highschools, like the basics, in University there is no time for that so a cleaner does it).

Knowing they’re well ahead of this posting. They both likely know that this series is going to draw out a lot more tears.
The first roughly four episodes of this series is very rushed but quickly seems into almost exactly manga accurate to the story. A few minor changes in a few spots.

Still say the original series from 03 handle this storyline with Shou Tucker and Nina far better. More flesh out and by far more dark.

  • @Syfa

Even if "Scar" hadn't shown up and killed him Shou Tucker was already a dead man. He was inside the military system and the state had already determined his guilt. He was set to be executed by firing squad. Any easy choice for them to make given that his work was largely useless outside of the human transmutations and they had no use for those.
