Your average police officer doesn't carry a gun in the UK and likely doesn't know how to use them, has probably never seen one outside of a museum or something. Only specially trained gun units that can be called in in emergencies have them, but that's not normal at all.
It is possible to own a gun in the UK, technically, but the requirements are so much effort that I personally don't know a single person who has ever bothered.
The UK has basically no gun crime relative to the US, and the police don't (can't) shoot people either (because they don't have guns), we also don't have the whole mass shooting problem, that's just the US really. I think we've had 2 since 2010? Like 10 years apart, and they were pretty small scale compared to the US.
The UK only has like 3/5ths the stabbings the US has per one million people, it's way safer. US media likes to make it seem like people are being stabbed left and right but no, the US has way more gun and knife crime than the UK

    • @grahvis

There are more guns in the UK than you realise, the difference is gun owners in the UK, take it seriously, there is no casual ownership.
67% of gun owners in the US claim they have a gun for self defence, give that as the reason for wanting a firearms certificate in the UK, would guarantee you don't get one.

McDonalds... In the EU and the UK, you're not allowed to use "lean finely textured beef"/ (AKA "Pink Slime" - where heat and centrifuges remove the fat from the meat in beef trimmings and The resulting paste, without the fat, is exposed to ammonia gas or citric acid to kill bacteria.) - they have to use good quality ground beef - so McD's in Europe isWAY nicer than anything that you'd get in the US.

A single high street in London can accommodate around 5-8 pubs, along with kebab and chicken shops.
Best advice, go to pubs in the boroughs outside of central tourist London.
Go Shoreditch or Walthamstow, Hackney or Tottenham or Holloway, Islington Angel is a great spot for tourists wanting to explore a little more.
Also, if you ever do come to London England, get full English breakfast from ordinary everyday Cafés.. the older or grungier looking the better the food. Trust me.
And try out the chicken and chips takeaway shops.

A lot of the reputation for bad food is because of rationing after ww2. Britain was extremely poor at the time and people used rations for food for decades. This heavily limited what people could eat/cook with for decades so a lot of our traditional family recipes were lost or were simply not as common. Thankfully our food is improving now rationing is over and we have access to more ingredients again. Traditional British food is similar to French food. As for the pubs, visit any historic pub in a small village or town for the authentic feel. Nothing beats that vibe here. They are the heart of the communities

Once you get used to Roundabouts it is MUCH easier than the crazy French drivers. You simply give way (yield) to the drivers to the Right, who are already ON the Roundabout. When there are no cars on the Roundabout THEN you enter it and just b4 your chosen exit, you then signal Left.

To answer your question and don't take offence. I think it's your second constitutional right but it's outdate. We do have guns and see police carrying them very often. Our police wear body cams and are strictly moderated and only deploy guns as a last resort. I used to to live in the US and the difference in training is incomparable. The US police would not get away with what they do here. I sat down in a restaurant once and cops were sat down eating dinner. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN HERE. But to answer your question, our police are trained to take out a threat non-lethally (arm shot, disarm) and basically gather intelligence on why they did acted the way they did. Very rare to see cops shoot dead people here.

Gun violence in the UK is very rare and a shooting anywhere will make the national news. We do have a knife crime issue but its more in the cites and is more the younger population but generally there are less people killed in the whole of the Uk in one year than in Chicargo alone. The concept of British food being bad originated during the war when American troops were stationed here. What they didn't allow for was the fact food was scarce and strictly rationed. People were just grateful for what they got. Obviously the Americans weren't. Its a shame their ignorance has persisted so long. Nowadays our food is much healthier than yours because we insist on fewer chemical additives and stricter animal husbandry. Every country in Europe does.
