Hi everyone, this is the first video on our channel that we recorded together (it's also the first experience of a speaking video for Andre and the first experience of speaking in English for Julia) - so it wasn't easy, but we're glad we did it and hope you find the video useful! Thank you so much for your support, likes, subscriptions and comments - this is just the beginning of our exciting RUclips journey! p.s. there are subtitles in this video, which you can translate into your native language in the settings. Normal people in The Netherlands do not spend 500-1000 euro's a day on spa visits. You are only looking at rich people over here and saying that they are the country. There are lots of people Who have barely have any money and can't go on holidays.
But yes it is more easy to live a comfortabel live over here.
But still. If you earn €1800 in total and you have to spend €1000 on rent, €180 for health insurance, €75 for mobile Phone, internet and tv, €30 for other insurance and €150 for your car. You have around €350 left. Food got expensive €50 a week. So €150 a month left. Now you got a problem, because you have to go to the dentist wich is not included in health care insurance and at the same time your fridge broke down. The dentist bill €600 and the fridge €400.
Do you see where i am going?
This is how 30/40% of people live.

No, I'm not looking at rich people, I'm looking at the specific example of our family in the Netherlands, and we have very very modest incomes. If you earn 1800 euros a month - that just means you don't work full time, because that's even lower than the minimum wage in the country. So in that case you can either work more days per month or indeed, rent cheaper accommodation. Also, if you earn 1800 euros you probably qualify for subsidies (health insurance etc). This is just my opinion from the outside, but what we choose is to work more days a week - a very simple and elegant solution.

In video I said that I saw some comments from Dutch people who spend there 500-1000, but of course I realize that not all people spend such amounts of money. Portugal ranks 43 out of 200 countries in GDP per capita, so its even on the top 50, if we divide by 4 groups, Portugal is on the one along with all the ritchests countries and then there are 3 groups below..so this video comes out of a point of view not very educated... but i can agree that yes because neighbor countries are some of the richest in the world, compared to them Portugal is not so rich by some margin to some, and if you see the entire video you can see they are very superficial in the way they present their opinions, although I can understand them, because their backgroud, and that sums it all up , I hope they find what they are loooking for... its not only working that you make money, its one of the paths but with good education it is more garanteed probablistically, and there are very rich people in any country, but generally they suck up more from people with less education, so education is a way to more distribute it, not just that but a main factors. Other is laws and systems put in place but that to derives from a long path of education systems and some freedom, remeber Portugal came from an dictatorial regime the biguest in the world in terms of time, so it is still reabilitating from that, because mentality was curved so much and still generation from then are alive, it takes time, prosperity does not come from just a decade it roots much more in time... Even History wise Portugal maybe 500 years ago was the richest country in the world, but history is not stactic and so today the landscape is diferent... reading is allways a benefit I should say!!

This is really misleading, since there are tenthousands of families who can barely pay all the bills. The salary is higer, but the costs are also extremely hig. For rent in Amsterdam you easily have to pay 2000 euros for a family house. So most famlies cant build up that much money to go on holidays more than 1 time a year. I dont know which people you spoke, but nobody spent 1000 euros on a spa. Only really rich people do that and even just a small percentage of those rich people. Its ridiculous to say that this is an indicator of wealth in the Netherlands! Alot of people have major debts and live a nice live from the outdise but are struggling to keep up with the bills every month. People on the street are mostly just neutral. Not everyone is smiling all the time when they walk outdoors. In Amsterdam and all the big cities nobody is waving to everyone. How did you came up with this nonsense? Yes the builodings and infrastructue are well made. Thats is a real sign of a rich country!

I don’t agree. There is lots of money in The Netherlands, you can see it at the amount of holidays people take abroad, the cars and caravans they own, the small amount of hours they prefer to work, how much they give their children, like electric bicycles, mobile phones with subscription, iPads, and how much they themselves spend. Of course there are poor people and of course there are people with less money, but they get subsidies for rent, energy, health insurance, daycare etc. In every item you see (TV, radio, internet, paper) about poor people or people on social benefits, they never ever say how much they get from subsidies, only that their social benefit is (too) low and they can’t afford this or that. And they hardly ever say that the debts they are in, are their own fault, made by bad choices and never because the social benefit and subsidies are too low. I’ve been poor, on a very low salary, and I made it on my own, without subsidy and more important, without spending for unnecessary items. I still don’t buy goods and items because they are new, I only replace items if they’re broken and can’t be fixed. I hardly buy new clothes because it is in fashion, I only buy it when I really need it. And I don’t have animals, these cost a fortune, although I like them a lot. I never had the money for it and now that I do, I still don’t take animals, because I always take in account that my fortune may be over in a second. At this moment I save €1.000 a month and use another €1.000 to extra repay my mortgage to lower the mortgage sum, on top of my regular mortgage payments. Plan your life more, live frugal or don’t spend unnecessary money and you will get a longway.

3-4Euros/cafe in Holland is a ripped-off. Dutch people are not happier than Portuguese at all. A normal dutch normal brings his own sandwich from home and eats at lunch time while a normal portuguese often has lunch "prato do dia" in the restaurant. 100% agree that dutch salary is 3x higher than portuguese one. However let's compare a normal Dutch with 6k salary and the normal portuguese with 2k salary. If the two guys live in the same lifestyle in Portugal, going to cafe 3 times per day, have lunch in the restautant,....the dutch guy will suffer by the end of the month, simply with 6k it it's tough to have a portuguese lifestyle in Netherland. However, if both guys play the saving games, no restaurant, no cars, only use bike or public transport to go to work, no cafes,....at the end of the month after paying rent the dutch guy can save 2.5-3k in his bank account while the portuguses guy only can have maximum 1-1.2k in his bank account. So it really depends on people's lifestyle. If someone is a diehard money saver, go for Netherland. If one prefers immediate enjoyable and laidback life, go for Portugal. It's good to have both countries as we all need options in our life.

Hi, Julia from SmartLiving is here! Thank you for such an interesting comment! I totally agree that living in Portugal and living in the Netherlands are 2 totally different lifestyles, and it's great to have them and be able to choose. If someone wants to eat in restaurants every day, they should go to Portugal, Spain or Italy or Asian countries, but not the Netherlands. I don't think the Dutch eat a cheese sandwich for lunch because they don't have money - it's just that for them the world doesn't spin around food (as it often does in southern or Asian countries). The fact that all Portuguese eat in a restaurant for lunch is a myth, and as someone who worked for many years in Portuguese companies I can say that eating in restaurants for lunch is only available to top managers or people who hate or don't want to cook. All other people (including myself and my husband) have always brought Tupperware (a popular Portuguese word for lunch box) and that's fine. I am planning to make a separate video about taxes in the Netherlands and in Portugal (I am an entrepreneur and I am closely involved with tax calculations) but I can absolutely not agree with your calculations as there is no "average Portuguese with a salary of 2,000 euros" and there is absolutely no way a person can save 1,500 euros a month in Portugal. Simple, let's look at gpd per capita, it is listed now 29k usd/ year/person. Hence the average salary in Portugal can be estimated around 2k euros.
I am sure that the Dutch who can afford the restaurants do not bring their own food to have lunch. They are actually working their a$$ off in Netherland to get the pension. Once they get the pension, the first day they do is to exit their own so-called "rich" motherland and relocate to the so-called "poor countries" like Portugal Spain Italy Thailand Fillipines Vietnam.....
One more thing for sure: the rich do not go to the rich country to enjoy their life. 100% sure that the rich Germans or rich American will never go to Netherland to enjoy for their life.
