A lot of people have mentioned the fact that I missed out a lot of aspects of the Dutch economy such as the discovery of gas, slavery, etc.
I aimed to make this video a short video giving a small insight on the Dutch economy, so I did end up leaving a lot out to make it short, but I realise that it would have been better if I went a bit more in depth.
I am just a one man team, so researching and scripting is just one part of the process of making a video, but I'm going to focus more on giving better in depth explanations.
Thank you for the support and I am committed to improving my research and coverage of future stories! ❤

Every Dutchman receives a tax bill for pumping water. The message is clear: to survive we all have to contribute. This shaped the country's culture. Avery Dutch kid is taught about the disaster of 1953 when poorly maintained dams couldn't hold back the stormy sea. The Dutch are puritans living in a small country and forced to cooperate and be rational.

    • @thenonexistinghero

That rationality went away decades ago. I can assure you, there's nothing rational about Dutch people these days. It isn't a coincidence that the Dutch are the most pro-EU and least informed people in Europe these days about the actual state of things. Unlike most other countries, Dutch folks tend to take the bald faced lies of politicians at face value and believe them without even thinking about whether or not it makes sense. Unlike other European people, the Dutch have been trained by the government to separate politics from reality. So when the government pulls crazy crap, the Dutch people just pretend that there's nothing they can do about it.
Of course not everyone is like that. But the reason things like the farmer's protests have not lead to any improvement is exactly because the people don't care since they believe politics is something too far away from them to truly care about. You'd think they learned in the useless forced lockdowns, but nope... they didn't.

It's estimated that the VOC has made around 20% of the money back then and that trading in Northern Europe made us about 80%. The thing with the VOC is that is was 1 company and why it's just way more impressive

The VOC was actually a lot of different companies combined into one. Hence the word 'United' East India Company (or in Dutch: Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie).
Tax income from trade was incredibly important to fund the war of independence, and the fierce competition between the different rivalling shipping companies drove up buying prices and drove down selling prices, thus lowering war chest contributions. The Dutch government solved this by combining all the rivalling shipping companies into one big trading company.

The Netherlands is so rich because it is a tax haven for multinationals. Due to the tax treaties that the Netherlands has concluded with most countries in the world, those companies only have to pay tax once and they do that in the Netherlands. They must supposedly have an office and there must be a plant in it. These companies must also have their own mailbox. For the rest, it must be kept clean. In the Netherlands they pay between 2 and 8 percent tax. And there is a tower that houses as many as 1500 companies. So there are also 1500 mailboxes and a cleaning lady who also waters the plants.

I must correct you on something. The Netherlands did not get rich from the VOC. The VOC had a massive overhead because of the maintenance of the fleet and the cost of war. The company barely broke even.
The main reasons the Netherlands became a large economy, are:
    1. Being a delta country: both the Rhine and Möse flow through the Netherlands, and give access to Germany and France.
    2. Being a small country with a high population density: centres with high population density are more efficient and productive
    3. Being rich in natural resources: the country was and is rich in fertile land, wood, coal and natural gas
    4. Being part of and establishing larger trade treaties, blocks, leagues, and unions; allowing for easier trade with other nations

Our country was in ruin after WW2, alot of the infrastructure destroyed and prior to WW2 we weren't doing all that great either economically. The wealth today is defenitely not from the era of VOC. It is because of our geograpical situation, our trade today and our infrastructure. We rebuilt and kept building, making our little country the most viable option to get goods overseas to the rest of mainland Europa, at least close to us. Think: Germany with a huge economy and alot of the countries even further away. Other ports and routes are just not that efficient. There are container ships that can only dock at 2 places in the world: Shanghai and Rotterdam. This i write to illustrate how important a good infrastructure is for a thriving economy.

I once had a remarkable experience in the Netherlands, staying with family in Wassenaar, my cousin and I decided to ride bicycles to the beach, a relatively short distance in a flat country... we cycled for a little while, then we began to go uphill, up and up on a road that went left and right but a significant incline that caught us by surprize. After a number of (long) minutes huffing and puffing, up this long-ish hill, with our heart rates also going up, we arrived at the top, and there was the ocean, level with us! It was an amazing epiphany, to feel in our hearts, legs and lungs, as we stopped in awe, and then looked back to see the Netherlands well below the sea level. If we were passengers in a car, I doubt it would have had have the same impact.

It's still an amazing observation, even for me, who doesn't know anything else.

New Amsterdam was the name of the seventeenth-century fortified settlement in the province of New Netherland that would later grow into what is now the city of New York. Broadway is one of the major streets in Manhattan, New York. At the time of the first settlement of Manhattan, this street was a path that the Manhattan Indians used to go. After Peter Minuit bought the land from the Indians on behalf of the Netherlands, the name “Breede Weg” was given to it. This name literally translated into Broadway after the city passed into British hands.

Thats bullshit. You've either never travelled or you don't understand numbers and or money. You're accounting taxes as something we have to endure, and the fact we have second-hand stores should indicate what? Look at our healthcare, it's absurd. We've probably forgotten what it normal. Or the huge organisations that exist for people that have gotten ill and are unable to ever work.
I see two things pertaining to our "poor" as you describe them. A lot have debts and when I converse with them a lot are not because we simply have no money. Apparently it's self-evident for people to own an iPhone of 1000,- or have a phone bill of 60,- per month. I see "poor" people that often have addictions.
Our "poor" people are not financially poor, we are just very poor with money spending.
When I walk to some neighbourhoods or bars explain this to me. How can so many of the poorest people, that according to you have to shop at second-hand stores and need foot staps, be addicted to cigarettes? I've met people that genuinely need financial help! They have debts (also, in this country you can go into the " schuldhulpsanering". For people with major debts, they kind of declare themselves bankrupt, and the government controls your money, so you have not too much or too less).
Anyway how can I meet these people you describe and they tell me they smoke one pack of cigarettes a day (seen worse). Thats almost 300,- a month. How can anyone declare how people have so little money here when I see the poorest people smoke away 300,-.

@@Schurkie505 Well when it comes to the wealth of a country it's only measured by the poorest. So I can listen to friends and family talk about how much taxes they pay, regarding income, piggy bank or a donation from someone. Or when filling out your taxes you're required to note down if you've got more than 542,- in paper at home.
But when I look at myself and a lot of people I have encountered. After studying psychology, got a good job in healthcare. Then got very ill myself, random seizures, so can't work. My current situation and this is all pure from the state. I have a large student loan and I pay 7,- a month. I've got pretty big appartement and receive a discount with rent and my healthcare. Receive enough money to do anything I want.
Not gonna buy an Audi or travel first class or buy the latest 1400,- iPhone. Even though these things are NOT reserved for rich people here, but for simply the people above the poorest.

      @Alnivol666 3 месяца назад +3

@@Schurkie505 Health care in Netherlands is only good if you have real serious problems. But in Netherlands. there is basically no prevention. They don't care about the general well-being of the population. To catch things early so you don't have to spend tens of thousands of euro to treat these things when they get really bad. They simply do not care. With making your own contribution 400 euro per month, people shy away from going to the doctor for small inconveniences or what they think are small. People pay between 150 and 200 euro per month for medical insurance. Some young people do not use this for 10 years which means they have basically paid into the system 18000 to 24000 euro. But they paid for other people basically. It is a social system. It is simply not going to be good the more of an aging population appears which is the case as it stands. There needs to be a better way.
