My favorite part is Jim & Michael as seen in the video. Really brings the early show's melancholy about being stuck in a mediocre job. And the look on Jim's face realizing the truth of what Michael's saying is priceless. Also notable about that scene: In the Office Ladies podcast, they'd discovered that there was a metaphoric reason for placement by windows during talking heads. Most characters do their talking heads by a window facing another interior of the office. But Jim's are always in the conference room - in front of the window facing outside. That was on purpose, meaning that only Jim has a future outside of Dunder-Mifflin. Of course, Michael's are in his own office, which has an outdoor window. I don't remember exactly if that was discussed, but It does seem his blinders are closed during his talking heads. In the scene I mentioned, Michael and Jim are both in front of an in-office window while talking about the potential outside of that workplace. Of course it's not a talking head, but it does fit thematically. Also noteworthy: By series end, both Jim and Michael are no longer at their old job.
You know, the first time I heard that was in a meme I'd seen a couple years back. It blew my mind, and is honestly one of the reasons I started this channel. After several rewatches I'd see a lot of really deep stuff side by side with the stupid/over-the-top bits. While I don't 100% know if that was originally the case (placements of talking heads depicting their desires), I do certainly think there's something to the fact that Jim always does his from a different side of the room. At very least, showing how he differed from the rest of the pack.
They talk about it in office ladies podcast & say lots of season 4 was filmed in a different order and then reordered after the strike! Great podcast - highly recommend.
Is no one going to mention Toby saying "No More Smores, No More Smores"? Ugh, I hated that so much, I can't explain why, it was just so cringy. But other than that, I do agree with you, this was a good episode, I might not have rated it as high as you did, but I enjoyed it.
I thought I had it in there! Maybe I didn't. It's very cringy, but I always thought that was the joke. That Ryan selected Michael's mortal enemy who is a major dork to go on his retreat.
5 out of 5? That rating should be reserved for “Dinner Party,” “Booze Cruise,” “Casino Night,” “Stress Relief...” I’d give this one a 3/5 But to each his own
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!! jk, I get it. I really do love this episode though, so I went with it. I think it a super underrated episode just based on the sheer amount of the load that Carell had to carry singlehandely.
Your biggest mistake- watching Man vs Wild instead of Survivorman. “Bear” Grylls is a complete phoney and a liar. Les Stroud,(not Lee), is 100% legit and he is a legend.
I always imagine a cooking show starring Les Stroud and every time he takes a bite he makes that "Oh..." sound he makes after he's been out in the bush for a few days and finally gets something to eat...
Chris, I love your reviews and this one is no exception, but I am totally opposite you when it comes to my opinion of this episode. To me it was the low point of Season 4. Michael going out in the wilderness with the camera and being stalked by Dwight, with the documentary cameras following both, crosses the line from "vaguely plausible but silly" to "utterly implausible". The subplot with Jim running into unexpected difficulties was more like what I expect from an Office episode, but the Survivor Man stuff dragged it down. There were a few moments of brilliance, such as "Let me put it this way: no, I do not" and "That's what I said". But the whole sequence with Michael and Dwight going off to the wilderness is just cringe-inducing at every turn, and not in a fun way. This is the only episode that I skip over when I watch the otherwise amazing Season 4. I would give it a 1/5 as opposed to your 5/5. But, of course, we're all allowed to have our own opinions!
this is one of those eps you remember being meh and then you watch it and you realize oh no this is a great episode cause of the ending...its just not referenced cause jim and mike do not have this bond in season 4 like they have in 5-7 and 1-3..season 4 was more about dwight and mike bonding so it feels sorta out of place and forgotten..in any other season that talk they have would fit better but in season 4 mike and jim do not really have scenes dedicated to them bonding like the other seasons
I never saw the tv show that this episode was based on. All along, I've been thinking that most of Michael's time in the woods was based on the castaway Shawn, from the Drake tribe on Survivor, Pearl Islands. It aired prior to this episode and Shawn was wearing an Armani suit (which is also funny.....because Michael tells Pam to get Armani on the phone when he was binge-watching The Devil Wears Prada)..... and when they got really hot, he had a fellow castaway cut off his pants from the knees down and he said....."but I saved the bottoms because I'll turn them into convertible pants for the night"....and he was wearing a blue buff on his head. I swore the writers took it from that, but apparently I was wrong.....but dang it if it isn't so similar to Michael cutting his pants. Oh well. Thanks Mulv Man. ;)
I never liked this episode much because I was annoyed of how spoiled were the employees. Every one of them even the more normal ones (like Oscar) were unusually bitchy and spoiled this episode. Also maybe because no one celebrates birthdays in my office ):
@@Mulverine Yes, of course, but i am not looking at it from a critic's perspective, but from my own likeness of the style of the episode; by saying that it's not really my style. Plus it's another reason I am thoroughly enjoying your analysis of the episodes, It shows me new perspective from people who are good at analysing film and TV. :D
This is one of my favorite episodes, and the moment where Dwight smacks Michael in the head with a shoe is reason enough alone.
“Please just allow me to have one cathartic moment in my life!”
Mulverine 😂😂😂

Like seriously how does this guy not have more subscribers
Me too. I think if this started 2 years before he started it,. Would have taken off like crazy.
This field guide has been keeping me sane. Thank you very much.
This channel is horribly underrated.
🙏 That's really kind!
Can we talk about how Ryan also left out Karen from the trip? We learned the episode prior that she's running her branch.

Could you imagine having to spend a number of days and nights with Toby out in the wilderness. Ryan may have got some revenge but at what cost?
I think it's so frustrating and cringey because he's walking around the obvious pun while making the pun (No smore)
@@mikepastor.k6233 Maybe that's how he got into drugs? :D
As someone that has never watched the bloopers and outtakes it's very much appreciated to see them intergrated so smoothly into these videos
Les Stroud is rolling in his thatch bed
I just about piss myself every time I watch Dwight whack a blindfolded Michael with the bottom of his shoe. It's so damned funny and on-brand.

As a long time survivorman fan this is one of my favorite episodes
Les Stroud is a living legend.
Best T-Shirt with a phrase on it I've seen. Excellent

Great work
Thank you so much 🙏
CXE would work better on the shirt
Ooooooooooooooh I'm broken mountain.
no more s'mores, no more s'mores!
Love it, could you do a review of threat level midnight?
As in the episode, or the movie itself?
Mulverine . either one
Well I'm moving sequentially, so I'll get to TLM at some point! Maybe I'll do a movie review for the full length movie as an April fools day vid! 😂
Ok thanks

I was invited to my boss's camping retreat last month. A bunch of us went. Michael didn't go. He wasn't invited.

The Battlestar Galactica sweatshirt was a nice touch. Never made the connection.
