When you talk about "biggest cardio mistakes" one might think about how long they do cardio, how much they rely on cardio, or how important it is to not only do cardio. BUT instead the whole video's about why cardio is inefficient as a workout rather than what people would expect like cardio mistakes or bad cardio habits.

    I feel like people over complicate cardio, especially when first trying to lose weight. Someone who’s severely overweight or has issues getting to the gym will attempt HIIT workouts early on and then burn out. LISS cardio is much more realistic for the average person and when done consistently will add up. Walking is the most accessible and enjoyable form of cardio for me. When I do HITT, I feel like death afterwards and my NEAT unintentionally goes down. I think it comes down to the type of cardio that people enjoy is the one they should do.

      @@Hat65 This is simply not true. It's like saying flying is a good way to have a plane crash. If you HAVE an injury and you are performing exercises or activities your doctor says you shouldn't then yes. If you are performing exercises or activities you don't know how to with bad form - also risk injury. If you are training above your ability then yes - you can also get hurt. But, when you are performing the correct exercises for the correct amount of time as instructed by a trainer - you will get best results more quickly. And, the other thing about HIIT training is that it's for shorter windows of time (short intervals / shorter overall workout duration). So, for example I could give a beginner 20 seconds work intervals with 40 second recovery for 20 minutes and then program rest days and they would be just fine. IF they have an injury or health condition that prevents any impact training they can do HIIT on a bike, rower, with a med ball, battle ropes etc. Point is... saying you get injured from HIIT training is ridiculous if it's done properly.

    For me, trail running is how I relax. It makes me feel good to be out in nature and have a variety in terrain (often adding variety in speed). Even if I am pushing extra hard to reach the top of a steep hill, I still find it relaxing. I think mainly it is mental resting time and then afterwards my body feels good even if there is some soreness.

      It's "inefficient" in terms of cal/min. But if you're looking to burn a lot of calories per day, say 1500 or more, there's no way that you can achieve that with HIIT or weight training, unless you're a young athlete in your prime. So from that angle, her comment is correct.
      My problem with using HIIT over steady-state cardio, is that HIIT creates more hunger. At least, that's been my experience. If I run a 5k as hard as I can, and I get home, then I'm much more likely to binge snack. On the other hand, I can walk 10 miles and the increase in hunger is minimal.

    I love this video! I’m currently feeling like a truck hit me on the 880 from doing HIIT. Can you do a video on recovery. It’s challenging to know if you should do an “ active recovery” or just a rest recovery. I’ve seen people say one or the other. Also, how do you stay motivated in the beginning especially when you are extremely sore.
    Again, thanks a bunch for your content!

    • @Faitter

      I dont think Jillians gonna answer, so:
      Girl, dont do HIIT. Do steady state cardio a bit longer and you dont have to be "hit by a truck", try to get your body to recover so long nor lose your motivation on training. Even professional athletes dont do HIIT that often, why - because it's very taxing on the body and might lead to an injury. Just as an example - HIIT sprinting for 15 minutes and you are going to feel it for the next couple of days or couple hours of just walking? Calories the same tho.

I have always loss inches and gained muscle when I do strength training and body weight exercises, which isn’t bad but doctors are always on me about “gaining weight” when in fact I’m smaller but the scale is higher. I’m in a 100 pound weight loss journey to get below 180. I’m 255 right now. I did a 1 month fit challenge and loss inches but gained 12 pounds of muscle which was not my intention.

Since I’m usually following a routine, it’s not a true HIIT - probably more like intense cardio - and my workouts often include alternating between things like mountain climbers, squats with shoulder presses, oblique planks, quick burpees, up down planks, deadlifts with hammer curls, squat jumps, etc. Heart rate is average of 130’s, max 165-170. I do fasted cardio, not because I believe it burns any more calories, but because I need to eat OMAD at night, and the only time I can workout is in the morn (yes, my WO’s are fasted also, the horror!). The omad was recommended by my doc to help with several health probs I have. I also count macros. But one of the biggest benefit for the long fast is because I have a serious problem with gorging. If I eat all day I gorge all day. The meal I eat at night I don’t gorge(I know, it sounds counterintuitive) I just cannot work out after I eat, even though I will have more strength and power. My body has adjusted so that I have some energy. Been doing this for a year

    • @JillianMichaels
      @JillianMichaels  3 года назад +1

      I like BOTH. I usually design my strength days WITH HIIT intervals built into the circuits. So for example: Squats, push ups, burpees. I also do 4 days of metabolic conditioning (strength training in circuits with HIIT intervals) and then a straight traditional HIIT workout once a week. HOWEVER, if you are trying to gain muscle and size you would apply a different strategy.

At end of my workout I do 15mins hit then 45mins steady state and I always do my cardio on the elliptical at a 20 degree inclined also that way I'm still working other muscle groups at same time thing is everything works different from person to person you find what works best for you and stick to it ...ya I hate cardio but it helps me mentally

    Hi Jillian, love this video! ❤️ I do need your advice please on this cardio topic😘 I’m a spinning instructor and I run mixed terrain every other day. I also strength train once a week. My runs are flat and hills as I run outdoors on nature trails. Do you think I need to increase my strength training to more than once a week? When I run I have a weight vest (8pds) and 2pds arm weights along with that some days. I just feel the cardio run helps my endurance when I teach my 60 mins spin class.

      My body was looking amazing after 9-12 months of strength training/weights compared to years of just typical cardio. Lockdown saw my body soften & sadly less muscles/not as toned now. I will back to it shortly & cannot wait! I’ll do 5-10 mins intense cardio to get bloody pumping then hit those weights/body strength exercises/weight machines/stretching/Pilates moves for the remaining 45-50 mins just twice a week (I have a busy family life). I walk the dog every day so that’s enough for active rest days in between. i try have a good diet lots of veg fruit but even that slid during lockdown due to not going to the shops as much/busy with children. my body never looked better when eating well/strength training.my mind set never felt better!i slept amazing & woke with a spring in my step!

Jillian has discussed MANY times the benefits of cardio for overall health. That is NOT what this particular video is about.
