    The two big characters “感謝” in the thank-you note read "Kan-sya". This is a more formal way to say "thank you" in Japanese (comparing with the more colloquial "Arigatou"). This word has the same meaning in Chinese and in Korean but has different pronunciations ("Gan-xie" in Mandarin Chinese; "Gam-sa" in Korean).

    I like the horizontal orientation of the O in the pilot on the clip. I think it complements the way the letter P is written.

    Just watched this again, and the first time I must have missed the comment that it's the same nib as the Custom 823. It's the same #15 size but it is 14K gold on the 823, hence possibly the difference in feel.

    Just watched this review (a little late I realize). A very easy and quick way to flush out the Con-70 converter is to syringe water up through the metal needle-like part that hangs down. A larger blunt syringe will go around that part, and I think a fine syringe will go in it. Takes only seconds....

    The writing experience of the 845 and 823 are amazing. My 823 has been inked everyday since its purchaae. It also ruined my ability to enjoy nearly ever more expensive FP I own!

    Another great review, David. I love my 845 other than its large size and the poor section as you note. A flagship with as much else going so well for it shouldn't have such a glaring defect. At the retail price, it should at least be ebonite of not also Urushi lacquered. Fortunately, this pen can easily be purchased for about half of retail online. If I had paid retail for it I would have been quite upset about the cheesy section. Mine is in all but pristine condition due to its size which is large for my hand. Still, I am quite pleased to have it in my collection for occasional use as I am a fan of the Pilot brand. Thanks again for another excellent review as we can always count on from you.

      Where did you purchace yours ?
      I'm all for a quality ebonite pen but the 400$ isn't doing it for me with a plastic section and feed as I could just as well get a vintage Montblanc.
      What say you ?

    I think it kinda looks like a souped up version of their custom heritage 92, which incidentally is a piston filler which I absolutely love.
    I think finishing a bottle of ink is always worth celebrating, not only the first one. I have like 30 bottles....... To finish

    Sorry to come to the party a little late, but this is a two tone 18k nib, while all the other Pilot Custom pens are 14k. I regard this as a very special nib indeed and significantly different in feel to the others. Like you, I simply love it. If you think the 823 writes well, you really do need to try this. My Custom 845 manufactured in December 2020 no longer has the “urushi” carving on the cap. Rather it is now part of the scripture of the cap band, which reads “Pilot Made in Japan/Custom 845 Urushi”

    +Figboot on Pens... at around 5:59 you seemed to suggest that the 845 comes in only black or exclusive vermilion. There was also an ultra-rare limited production series of navy, green, and deep red, in 50 units each.

    My Vermillion 845, nib dated 11/2021, does not have “Urushi” written above the band, nor does it have visible seam lines on the section. Pilot must have made some manufacturing changes the past couple of years.

    The Pilot catalogue price FKV-88SR in Japan is JPY 88,000 available with Fm, m and b nibs. If ur looking for something better, Pilot Namiki Roiro Urushi FNF-148A-B or red( JPY 155,400) with nib options of fm,m and b could be much better but similar refill system. I think Roiro Urushi is much better pen from my experience. The nib of this model is at the same size with top Emperor collection but only gold color the biggest nib I have ever used.

    I don't understand why you can't get this with an FA nib. I would love to have a nicer body for that nib. My 912 FA is amazing and my favourite pen so far, I wish more manufacturers made flex nibs like that. The only gripe I have with the 912FA is that you need to buy a new feed straight out of the box, still two feeds (wet and wetter) plus the pen together are about 200,- you can't even get close for that money with other brands

  • @michaelpiano7052
    @michaelpiano7052 6 лет назад

    I think they show using a big bowl because klutzes like myself will probably drop the nib into the sink, hence, the bowl acts as a safety net. :) That is a nice pen along with those wonderful macro photography shots provided. Is it common for pens with urushi to have such a rough finish like that? I thought I’d ask because I’m planning to buy that pen from Tokyo Pen Shop Quill in BB as well.

    I really like the Pilot Custom Urushi, and have the Vermillion version. However, it is a bit large for routine carrying. Is the nib a performance somewhat similar on this one? I also have the Custon 823, and to be honest, I am a bit bummed by the performance [both B and M versions]. The nib on 823 is light years away from Pellikan M1000. Is the nib on 845 any different?

      @simonjonasmusic8410 After a year, I can answer myself :)
      The m1000 nib is definitely more pleasant to use than pilot 845 and 823. The pilot 845 M nib is the smoothest of all my pilots. It is smoother that 823... but custom urushi is the best pilot I have. I would rank Pelikan m1000 nib above both 823 and 845, but below Custom Urushi. Hope that helps..

    also told us that it’s highly probably our vermilion lacquer Custom 845 order would arrive after they issues vermilion Custom Urushi.
    According to Pilot’s plan, vermilion Custom Urushi would be regular lineup when our vermilion Custom 845 arrives.

    Is it smoother than your the MB 149?

      dipro001 I've had this pen worked on, so it's not a fair base comparison, but my medium 149 is a bit smoother.

    Converter? $500? Seems a bit weird to me.

      Piston filler or vac filler can hold more ink but I don't think converter filler is inherently bad. For some one who changes ink very often, I think I prefer converter over piston filler.

      Yan Doroshenko piston filler is not expensive to manufacture so production cost is not the reason they tend to be more expensive. German school pens were piston fillers up to the 70s.

      Unless a piston filler is extremely easy to take apart, it is a PITA to clean. Even with "easy to clean" ink it could take a while. There is place for converter pens for me. Like @wetracy said, the KOP is a fine example . I have one too, love it. I like to change inks all time and it is actually a good thing. I carry several pens on the road and there is never a problem with ink capacity.

      300 euro is the max I am willing to pay for a catridge/converter. But it gets even weirder. The Classic pens LB5 cost 1.500 euro. And that is a cartridge converter as well.

      MrPleers my limit used to be $1200 but since all the pens over $700 have been a bit of a disappointment my limit is now $700.
