    Thanks for a splendid review. I recently got an 845 to complement my 823, and they have convinced me that Pilot is the best of the Japanese Big Three.

      Yeah, Pilot is really good, and the two you have are probabaly as good as it gets. Hope you enjoy them!

    Sumptuous looking writing instrument, my friend - the Urushi finish is (undoubtedly) superlative. For my own taste, I'd like to see a version with Platinum accents, but hey, that's not a deal breaker. The nib is gorgeous - but then, Pilot always deliver excellent blades. Agreed, the whole package is very minimalist, Michael - another success story for this Japanese house. Thank you once again,
    Andrew :)

      This is really a very fine example of a pen. Persoanlly, I really enjoy the deep yellow gold adornments on it.

    This one along with it’s larger sibling is on my wish list. It’s an incredible pen and so is the Pilot Custom Urushi. Thanks Scrively 😀👍🏻 I know the 845 is Urushi but you know what I mean. 😆

    I watched this review a long time ago and thought, "Well I have an 823 and so I don't really need one of these."
    Then one night whilst journeying on the web, one jumped out into my headlights. The price was very good and so it became road kill on the spot. (420.00 Euro, from Japan).
    There is nothing I could add to this observant review. Other than that it is a lovely pen.
    One comment though. The button press converter is superb engineering. The first clever thing is that the valve has a pass through, like a syringe needle. So pressing the button expels the air from above the ink in the converter, thus allowing further presses to continue the filling.
    The enigma is that further presses expel the ink for emptying. I could not fathom how both filling and emptying could take place with the same action. It's a superb converter.
    I bought one with a finer nib that I would usually use and opened the tines just a little. (Engineers feeler gauges). Now a reasonably wet nib which I like. The nib was too dry for me before that. The nib appears to be the same as the 823's nib.
    It has the quality and feel of a great flagship pen.
    Thanks for this review.
    Be well.
    Afterthought - Did you mention that it is ebonite? The urushi lacquer protects that from ageing and discoloration. A great combination.

    • @Scrivelynotes

      Thanks so much for the nuance on the converter. As always, your connoisseurship (is that a word? likely not!) does add much needed color! Really appreciate it.

      As always, you are so kind.
      I'm not so well informed regarding pens. After all I dog your vlog to learn, but the varied engineering of such a simple device and the ways even slight design changes can effect the writing experience is rather fascinating.
      Of all the hand tools I have ever used the fountain pen is something quite particular.
      Thanks for your vlogs I enjoy them greatly.

    I agree with Joel, in my opinion Pilot is the best between the 3 Japanese brands. I am very happy with my Justus 95 and Custom 823.

    I would have expected to find three stars in the ring, not two. Is there a reason for this? The box has also changed.

    The box is a traditional type of box in Japan for items Ike fountain pens worthy of a higher level gift. I would love to purchase the Custom Urushi, because it has what Pilot calls the # 30 size nib. On the other hand, I just have trouble paying even the “from Japan” price around $500 (with sales tax) delivered. I can purchase the a great pen with the same nib (a. Number 15) either on the Custom 823 or the Custom 743 for almost half that price. I was able to purchase the Custom 743 recently, with the amazing #15 FA nib for approximately $300 delivered (shipping & taxes paid). So, how much do I want to pay for urushi laquer?

    So, my Custom 743 with FA is my favorite letter-writing pen. My I favorite pen is a Pelikan 800 (or even 1000). I love the German and Japanese pens most, largely because I think their engineering and quality win over the artistic (but sometimes substandard writing experience with any pen under $700 from Italy). I would not usually pay the prices for pens in countries with a VAT of 18% or more. I live in a county in the USA with a 7.25% sales tax rate, so I can purchase some Japanese pens and many German-made pens at very reasonable prices. For example, I still consider the LAMY 2000 the perfect business pen design (and I hold a pen with the classic grip, so the sweet spot is not an issue). All this to say, I get pens to write with. I have maybe 4 or 5 pens in the luxury price range. I just cannot afford to spend the money on a Pilot 845 when I can get a wonderful Custom 743 with virtually the same or better nib for half what you have to pay for the 845 there.

    • @ctsealteam6
      @ctsealteam6 4 года назад +2

      Indeed. You would only get the 845 over the 743 or 823 for the Urushi coating / flat top shape. Other than that the writing experience would be just as good. I own a 823 and has been my everyday pen. Now I struggle to find another pen that is just as good with the balance of cost / performance.
      Regarding the Lamy 2000. I got it for a few weeks now and I have to say I still prefer the Pilot nib tuning over Lamy’s. And I am just like you, have a standard grip and Lamy sweet spot isn’t the problem.

    Help me! I can’t decide. Kaweco Sport Brass F or the Travelers Company Fountain Pen. Much appreciated!

    • @Scrivelynotes
      @Scrivelynotes  4 года назад +1

      really depends a little. Kaweco is a much heavier pen, much harder nib, but can be written even unposted (for some quick notes). Traveler pen is much more lightweight, much softer/bouncier nib, and can not be written without flipping around and posting. Then, of course, there is the design difference. I personally prefer thhe KAweco. Does this help?
