My absolute favorite Pilot pens are the Custom Urushi, Justus 95 and the Silvern. The E95s and the Falcon are two others.
Not your fault, I guess, but the Custom Urushi pens (I own the majestic vermillion one) are quite outrageously priced here in the U.S. I bought mine direct from Japan for $900 (incl.shipping). The $600 mark-up in the U.S. is not remotely excusable. It is outright extortionist.
edit: forgot to mention that the Custom 845 is very special to me, too.

I love all 16 of my Pilot pens! They never dry out , outside of the 2 retraceable pens , but that's the trade off. I've picked them up after years of not using and they start first line. The nibs write very well, no RR-tracking, etc. They travel quite well, except for the retractable. Pilot may not be a sexy Italian pen, which is damn near impossible to neglect.
Pilot has given me a fantastic experience every time.

I have the 743 with the SF nib. What a joy to use. I chose this model over the 823 for ease of maintenance. The CON-70 converter is relatively easy to clean if you have a blunt nose syringe. Is the 823 has a removable section, then I would whole heartedly switch if you can get the SF nib.

Owner of Custom Heritage 92 here, in broad (comparable to Europeans its, let's say, a kinda of a medium, e.g. a Kaweco medium). Pairing it with "fast" inks like the Iroshizuku line, is the best, the ABSOLUTELY smoothest, feedback-less, hot-knife-in-butter, effortless pen to write I have ever experienced. This pen is a thing of beauty (and got it in Goulet's favourite blue demonstrator accent) and by all that's holy, it *WRITES* . You simply start moving the pen and it glides along the paper, you literally feel *nothing* when using it. This pen made me a long time Pilot fan - and I 've come to appreciate their cheaper offerings like the Metro series. The nib quality is superb - and if you get it in a good price, simply nab one. The integrated piston saves you all the effort and it can write even if unused for months down the line. Do yourselves a favour and try one, you 'll probably will not want to use any other pen ever again.

Didn't realise any of these was hard rubber rather than acrylic. That's a pretty high-end material, as by definition it can't be moulded -- they're basically carved from a block of hard rubber. I know from clarinet mouthpieces (generally the same material) that ebonite is really brittle -- you can't drop them. Is it the same with ebonite pens? or does the urushi finish offer a tough outer layer?

Super useful video, thank you Brian! I was kind of confused with the Pilot numbering system, but you've just made things cristal clear. Pilot pens are amongst the best writers, extremely reliable and consistent, extremely pleasant to use. I own a few (Justus 95, resin Falcon, E95S) and they're just so good. I was very impressed by the bounciness of the Vanishing Point, but the form factor just isn't for me. The Custom Urushi, though, is certainly on my list... I might pull the trigger on it one day.

Thanks for the video. A nib grind video would be cool. I love my Pilot Custom Heritage 912 PO. I bought it mainly for my checkbook register and taking quick notes. But I wrote a letter using it and it wrote well. I was using Midori cotton paper and noticed that fingerprints on the paper causes some problems with the PO nib. I try to be conscious of not touching the paper, but I forget occasionally.

I own the Custom Heritage 912 with the soft fine medium nib, and it’s a dream to write with. Soft, wet, bouncy, with a slight feedback to it. Highly recommended, and more refined feeling than the #5 soft fine medium nib available on JDM Custom Heritage 91s. The 912 is easily the best model out there in terms of nib options.

Thanks this was really helpful! I'd love to see a video on all the different nib options. It definitely makes sense to not carry broad nibs when they aren't popular for you, but I also wonder if it might be a chicken or the egg scenario. Broad nibs (and double broads when they're available) are my favorite nib sizes, but when a pen comes with those nib sizes and you don't carry them, I tend to buy them elsewhere. I wonder if enough other customers do too, that it would make a difference. Either way, I do really appreciate what you do have available, plus the great videos, customer service, photography, packaging, and website design.

I've always liked the size 50 nib on the Emperor and I didn't see a need to try the size 30 nib as a consequence, but ever since I tried a Custom Urushi and found it to be much softer than the Emperor's even larger nib I have wondered... what if the Namiki nibs had the same geometry as the Pilot Custom nibs? It really feels like the Custom nibs are much softer because they have wings as opposed to having straight flanks like the Namiki nibs. I'd be so curious to try a size 50 Custom nib.

Love this video survey, thank you for making it. Had to rewatch it of course and then I noticed that (11:12 onwards) in the overview of 912 nib widths the SF line looks thicker than the SFM one, which is surprising. Or is that to do with pressure exerted by the hand of the writer? The soft is flexier after all. I hope one day to be able to compare the two at a pen show.

And so I learn that my Custom 742's #10 music nib was made in Nov 2023. Cool.

Do you think Pilot will ever do something like a slip and seal cap? I love to have a whole bunch of pens inked up at once and I’ve found that if the pens I use don’t have great seals, they dry out between uses. I love Japanese EF nibs and while my collection started out with Pilot (and vanishing point may still be my one true love), I’ve been moving toward platinum (although my E95s is going strong) with twsbi EF when I want something a little thicker. I would love to add a pilot custom to my lineup at some point but for me they’re too expensive to get one to hope it’ll stay wet long enough for me with how many pens I keep inked. What do y’all think?

I actually have 6 Pilot pens (E95s, Falcon, 912, 823, Justus and Custom Urushi) and they are always inked. Never had a problem of dry ink (the E95s stayed in the closet since January, I just tried it now)
They all have a inner cap which doesn’t slip, but perfectly seal the nib, I found even better then the Platinum pens.

I was very surprised when I saw a Pilot Custom 98 review from 2007.

Why do they not supply replacement nibs?

My absolute favorite is the Custom 823 M nib with Kon Peki. Killer combo.
