The auto and house insurance cost increases are real and urgent problems that must be resolved systemically urgently.
My auto insurance for 2 cars in NJ was $600 for 6 months in February 2022. I just got the renewal quote, and it is now $1,300.
During this time, I did not get any traffic tickets, no ccidents, no changes in address, no change in driving habits (ie do not commute with car) and no change of drivers of household members.
According to the insurance firm, it's purely due to current repair costs.
So inflation has not been single digits then, as my auto insurance cost more than doubled for no fault of mine.
This is insane and it must be fixed asap!

$46,000 is still way over the top and still way to much electronic "whiz bang/goo" that serves zero purpose other than an excuse to jack up the price and when not covered under warranty - cost to much to repair. All of the vehicle manufacturers have gotten way out of hand in terms of "greedy" to start with - then add in dealerships who then add to the "greedy". Next add in the cost of insurance on new vehicles - all not worth it. The car manufacturers and dealers are providing huge incentives to fix up older stuff more and more all the time......
A vehicle is nothing more than a needed item to go to work, school, church, Dr., shopping, etc. and a cost to be minimized not maximized! Purchase for need not want.

I'm having the same issue. I'm shopping new Honda Ridgelines and I get online offers that are not true because and discount off MSRP is then offset with stacks of add-ons. Most specifically Diamond Valley Honda in Hemet, CA sent me an internet offer for a Black Edition Ridgeline of $42k (MSRP $48k) and I went there to buy it cash. Then they said they can't actually sell it at that price and after over $10k in add-ons (that weren't even on the addendum just the breakdown sheet) the OTD was $57k !!! I said nobody pays that and got up to walk out. They asked why I don't make an offer and I said I was there because they made me the internet offer. They offered another $1k off as I went through the doorway. I expect that from some shady corner used dealer, not a full Honda dealership. Oh I forgot to mention, when I asked for a copy of this bloated offer sheet they said no and literally pulled it back off the table so I couldn't get a picture of it. That dealership can kiss my a**.

We used to buy a new vehicle every other year. But that has changed. The current price of a new 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee (equipped the same) is almost exactly twice the price of our 2011 Jeep Cherokee, when it was new. We recently bought a new car (NOT a new Jeep), but ONLY because an inattentive driver totaled our 2011 Jeep. We never intended to sell it or get rid of it. Cars cost too much. And dealers show real disrespect to their customers with all the worthless add-ons. Our routine purchase cycle has gone from two years to 15.

I agree something needs to change because they are slaughtering the customer, but getting rid of the entire trillion dollar industry isn’t the answer. What needs to be done is better regulation, and price ceilings need to be set for every vehicle depending on trim. That would take some time but it’s an option. Regulation.

If the majority of Americans wake up to the huge losses they incur buying new vehicles and start wisely buying 5 to 10 year old quality, well maintained, vehicles there will be a huge recession in the world until the imbalance is corrected. As it should be. If those losses were eliminated, and the money funneled into investments, people will be much more financially benefited. The benefits to a person who does this should be taught by this channel. They're asking $27,411 for it. It's been on their lot for 217 days and since late Nov. they've decreased the price by $6,379. I like the "mini Wranger" look of the Renegade and I like the driving visibility. This one is red and it has the panoramic opening roof, which is the main reason I'm interested in it, it's again like a Wrangler. But I'm just not going to pay more than $25k out the door for a Fiat 500x, which is the platform the Renegade is built on. I would've driven it off their lot weeks ago for $25k. Ray, the electronics definitely adds to the insurance costs. But, I think the biggest factor to insurance price jumps is because of the electric cars. A tiny hit on the bottom of the car (or anywhere on the car, really) can damage the battery pack. Because of the chance of fire to a damaged battery pack (even for the tiniest amount of damage), the battery pack has to be replaced. Those battery packs are like $20k+!! Just a small accident involving an electric car can cause the car to be considered totaled by the insurance company because of that. Insurance companies (I used to work for one) have to spread those costs around to everyone in order to stay solvent and still make a profit. I just finished my 6 month policy with an insurance company (Progressive) . My rate was going up. I did a new quote and signed up with the same company as a new customer. I got max coverage on everything and got it at a lower rate! (I increased everything to max coverage because if I wind up in an accident with one of these electric cars (that the other driver/s have -- I won't buy one), I want to make sure there is enough insurance to cover the insane costs of these electric cars and the new severely overpriced cars and trucks. My car is 19 years-old. I mostly drive about 35 miles per week (about 1500 miles per year.) My 19 year-old car just hit 44,500 miles. Paying insurance sucks. I have never had an accident or ticket, but the law requires us to pay anyway.

The cost of a new or relatively new car is an outrage. My husband is a car mechanic and has been for decades. He knows them all, inside and out. He said not a one of them is worth even a small fraction of what they cost. People are going into horrible debt just to have a car to drive. We both proudly drive very old cars that we paid cash for even though we can afford new cars. However, my husband is able to keep them in running order. Not an option for many. But what people do need to change is stop buying cars for vanity so that you’ll look slick to your friends and neighbors. It’s a trap.

What I can't stand is feeling like I am being ripped off, that feeling that businesses are making rapacious profits. That certainly is the public's perception of car dealers. The Jeep example you gave in this video is a good example. The price of the Jeep may be fair but those add ons are ridiculously, laughably overpriced. I agree with what you mentioned, Ray, that dealers should charge enough for their products and services for the dealership to make a reasonable profit margin but not gouge their customers.

Let's not forget that EV's are one significant factor increasing vehicle ownership costs. A good friend who is the CEO of a large AAA Region was telling me about a comprehensive cost analysis his region just completed. Quick take from the analysis is that EV's are increasing costs for all of us. The short of it is EV's pay NO taxes towards roads and that EV's are incredibly expensive to repair and as a result have exponentially increased insurance costs for everyone. This is with only 10% of the total fleet being EV's.

These videos are always very accurate but the hail storm dent repair analogy was not my experience. Way back in 2008 I was trading in a car that had Acorn damage, similar to hail. That damage severely discounted the value of the car. I had the PDR done on it to the tune of $1200 to do the hood, roof, and trunk lid. They did an amazing job, car looked brand new considering it was only 2 years old at the time. That repair added about $2,700 in value when I traded it in so it was worth it. As everything has gotten more expensive I doubt a similar PDR today would cost less.
