      @@chadbailey189 The point is not about the warranty, it's about offering a lower interest rate "if" you buy the warranty. The interest rate and warranty option should be entirely separate items.

      Thank you for doing these videos. I want to give a shout out to ( Jet Chevrolet) in south Seattle area. They let me test drive the 3500 Z-71 Silverado. FIRST take it home. Drive the pickup. They Test Drive my 2000 Ford PU before any talks of trade in. Something Ford did not do.

    I actually had a salesman charge me a $1000 deposit to test drive a used Camaro but would wave it IF MY HUSBAND came in to test drive it. Yes, I paid it and documented EVERYTHING because they offered a cheaper price IF MY HUSBAND came in to buy it. Yes I filed a suit against them and we ended up settling out of court.

      @@Threedog1963 No, they gave me the deposit back. I filed suit against them for discrimination. There was a lot more to the situation, I just outlined the gist of it. It was actually much worse. I don’t get offended easily and am definitely not a feminist and I had never sued anyone before or have since. It was a very bad situation on the part of the salesman and dealership.

      That's funny to me. When a woman comes on the lot I am happy because it's usually women making this sort of decision. If a couple comes on the lot I talk to the woman unless they make it clear she's not in charge. And, invariably, men tell me "Well, I gotta ask the wife/girlfriend" before they write the check.

      @@scottysgarage4393 I was in my early 40’s at the time and yes, my husband always refers to me. I grew up with a hunting rifle in one hand and a wrench or hammer in the other. I used to help work on, paint and build cars and build houses and hunt from age 4. I was taught how to negotiate but my husband grew up as a city boy and left most auto buying up to me. That’s why I “played” their stupid games. They had no clue who they were dealing with. 🤣

    I once had a dealer ask for my drivers license to take the car for a test drive. I went for the test drive and decided against the car. Just didn’t feel right for me. The salesman wouldn’t return my drivers license. Felt like I was being held hostage. I took out my cell phone and told him if I didn’t get my license back in 3 minutes I would call the police. I got my license back. Hate the games.

      My dealership requires us to scan your ID and make a print of it for our files, but we give the ID back right after we scan it. Its also done right in front of you so there's no bs going on

    I had a car dealer tell me a fair, honest price, and then when I showed up to sign and leave they marked up the price 7k. I was held hostage for 2 hours, ended up walking, then was called by the manufacturer to see how it went and I told them terrible. They called me back and told me to come get it for the first agreed price but by then my wife had already found a better looking one for $1k cheaper. Being scum doesn't always pay off

    And this is exactly what I was experiencing this past June. My brothers daughter, my niece, needed a car because she just graduated from high school and was going to college. Anyway, we hit this off the wall dealership not far from his house and looked at what was a nice looking car. The first thing the salesman wanted was that credit app. Now my brother doesn’t know how to deal with salesman, that’s why I went with them. I told the salesman that before we do anything, I want to test drive that car and I wanted the out the door on the road price of that car before any mention of money or financing. So he agreed. The car tested out great. The price was higher than advertised and I asked him why. He showed me the write up and said that there was this charge and that fee and so on. I said, I don’t have to pay for any of those by law. He said, you do here. I said no I don’t. So I told my brother and niece, let’s go and walked right out that door. Went to a Ford dealership in Timonium and got a car just like the one we looked at at a cheaper price. And that’s how you deal with crooks and scoundrels.

      Learned this after my second fuck up buying a car seems I didn't learn from the first one both times the transmission went out after the second time in started learning about reading codes and thing my problem was buying what I liked regardless of the problems it may have now I am looking at prices and wondering if they want it gone or they wants what they can get out of it before it breaks so obd scanning from here on out complete checks of the vehicle no exceptions everything is to be inspected codes are to be scanned by me instead of them so they don't clear and tell me they fix when they just cleared and it pops.up five minute after leaving with it and whatever problem happening under the hood are be looked for won't be making these mistakes a again ever getting a those transmissions fixed was quite costly our wallets didn't appreciate the unconsensual fingering they got because we were not been keen minded on vehicles

    A few months ago I went with my dad to trade a car at a dealership he had been looking at. I always love doing this, he was a car salesman for almost 20 years, so it's fun to watch the cars salesman charisma shine.
    During the process the saleswoman we were talking to, decided to pull out this $1,000 insurance thing on us. She said "this is a legal thing, all of the cars we sale have to have it, it's not a choice" and my dad said "ok, give me my keys back" the look on her face dropped. He went off on her about that's completely false, possibly illegal and he they don't remove it, he wants his keys back now so we can leave. She gets all apologetic but still says "I'll go ask my manager about it, I'll be right back".
    She came back apologizing and said they would not only remove the fee, but include the insurance for free.
    Always nice to watch scammers squirm lol.

    I haven’t bought a car in 16 years. The dealership that posted up with the reconditioning fee, I literally said “No. No. The advertised price is the price. This is a racket.” And I walked out. I appreciate hearing I did the right thing!

      @@Freshprankstv1 Depends on the car and how much you drive- but 20k for a car with 127 on car that wasn't a truck, not so sure. I don't know all that much about Subarus.

    Went to a dealership this weekend to look around. Got VIN numbers and texted the sales rep a request for OTD prices. She hit me with that reconditioning fee and a $2995 certification fee. I told her thanks but no thanks. She proceeded to text a nice paragraph explanation which I ignored. Thanks for the video!

      Got hit with $2995 certification fee. Asked for a breakdown of what was checked. They could not answer. I walked. They listed the car for $18,995 and after tax and their BS fees the price was $29,000. 🤡

    Took a family friend to a Lexus dealer to help her buy a car. The salesman was courteous and informative. Things went south when the sales manager came into the picture. During the typical 'price haggling' she made it known that my friend wouldn't/couldn't afford the car. We didn't even get to the finance/payment part of the transaction. She just assume my friend was going to finance it.
    We went to another dealer, where everyone was courteous, and my friend bought the same car about the same price that we had asked at the other dealer...in cash.
    Feel bad for the 1st salesman,. Her manager cost him his commission.

      A similar thing happened to a friend. His girlfriend went to buy a car and was told she couldn’t afford it. She left and bought a car at another dealership. He went back to the first and informed them that she paid cash at the second dealership (which she did).

      Me and a friend were looking at cars at a dealer lot and a young salesman comes out to greet us. I asked if we could test drive one of them and he said "Sure after you show me proof of income". I told him sure we'll be right back and never came back. Maybe because we looked young too idk. But never assume you know someone. I could definitely afford that vehicle 😂

      @@dethanww2 I think dealerships make more money with their service depts. It still is true somewhat that they make some bonus from banks from finance deals.
      There so many nuances to buying a car. When I bought my odyssey in 2016, the dealer told me that he was able to give a further discount(don't remember the amount) if I sign the finance deal, Apparently, he gets some commision/payback from the bank for doing financing deals. He said I could always pay off the following month, That's what I did, and saved some more money. So he was willing to share some of the bonus with me and made a sale. That's why I buy towards the end of a model year. Dealers just want to clear their lots and inventories.
      P/s: Dealers would most likely steer you to a bank that gives them the fattest commision, and harmful to your finance.

      I'm a car salesman and I've lost so many deals cause my managers are a holes, or just lazy and it's not fair at all, that's why I will keep my managers out the picture until I know it's a deal, they love the car and already talked about how the car would be purchased

    My favorite purchase of a new vehicle was when I bought a truck way back in 1991. I drove the Ranger and liked it. They drove my old car and agreed to give me a decent price on trade (way more than I could have sold it for) and we were down to the price, hadn't talked about financing at all...he hadn't asked and I didn't bring it up. I opened my checkbook, wrote their name, signed it, and said, okay, what are we going to write in amount. He said a number, think it was 9500, I said, 8500, he said 9300 and I closed the check book, grabbed my keys and left. He called a couple days later and said how about 8700. I said to fill it with gas and that this was my first actual new car so I want to drive it off the showroom floor (so they detailed it even though it only had like 9 miles on it) and I went and got it on a Saturday.

      Not just car buying, basic negotiating skills in general. Getting over the "lets be polite to the salesman" crap. They will take advantage of you in any way they can. I buy cars, trailers bikes, and such, its helped me immensely. Most fun i had was negotiating a deal on an enclosed trailer that i bought. She was sharp, but so was I.

      This year I had 2 bad experience with car dealers. The 1st was a used lot and they wanted way too much. The other was a brand dealership that scams people with cars that aren't there.
      The 1st time I spent more time trying to actually negotiate with the owners. They were rude and didn't listen.
      I didn't curse, I didn't yell, I didn't resort to any name calling. (Even though they probably deserved it.)
      In the case of the later, the guy I spoke to their was just a young sales guy. I don't blame him for the bad policies of the company.
      Anyway, being nice doesn't have to be weak.
      I stood my ground in that 1st situation at the used lot and refused to buy it. Not cause I couldn't afford it, nut it because I knew the KBB value and didn't want to pay more.
      Don't confuse being mean with being strong. Don't confuse being assertive with being aggressive.

      The average consumer in most markets can't afford a Tesla.
      Sorry but if you can spend upwards of a 100,000 car that will cost 10k to 15k for batteries in 10 years good for you. The vehicle will also be outdated technology by 10 then.
      I buy new or slightly used and drive until dead. And I mean totally unrepairable. Last car 27 years old still looked and drove like new except a little paint issue. Heater switch went bad, caught leaves on fire in the duct work, burned to ground. My current car works perfectly fine some parking lot dings but is 22 years old. If possible will be driving 20 years from now. I can do a total rebuild of everything for way less than that Tesla.
      I refuse to buy a box of technology just because I can.

      ​@@rodx5571Just don't play their games. Guess what, I won't deal with all the finance add ons, I won't even let them play games. I go in, they come back with a price. I go back with my price. They have one shot to get a reasonable price between their initial price and mine.
      Don't try and sell me on payments. Must watch your words close. On one deal I walked away from this was years ago. I said no 5 year loan. I wanted 4 years.
      So they called called me back and said they were meeting my price. Drove 30 miles back. The price was 999.99 more. They told it's around the price 1,000 less. So they verbally rounded 999.99 down to 000.00.
      Yet the payments were just about what I calculated at the current rate.
      So what happened? Dealer said they played with interest. That didn't add up. I scoured the paper work so much BS on the document. What they did was change the terms to 4.5 years. Caught you. They came back with you said you did not want a 5 year loan. 5 and 4 was standard at the time.
      I said game over and walked out. They lost the sale.

      1. The lower end Tesla is around $30k. The average consumer can afford a Tesla if they can afford a new car at all. As an added bonus, you don’t have to haggle at a dealership.
      2. “In 10 years” is a fool’s argument. Almost no one keeps a car that long and at that age a fender bender will total your car. Good luck getting insurance for a salvage title.
      3. Your 22 year old car is far more likely to catch fire than any other type of car on the road
      4. As you trend toward buying new cars, they will all be so tech dependent that they will be crappy Teslas anyway.

    I once told a saleswoman I was basing my purchase primarily upon fuel economy and she directed me to a mini-van bragging that it gets 200 miles per tank. I gave her a second chance by explaining I don't have a family and don't want a minivan, that I'm looking for fuel economy because I rove 100 miles a day for work, and she insisted that I should consider the minivan and wouldn't even talk about the smaller car I was actually interested in. Two hours later, I drove off with the car I wanted from a rival dealership in another town.

      I came into some money in the 80s so decided to go and buy a car outright, no credit, cash payment straight off. So I visited a Toyota car dealer to the south of Doncaster U.K. walking in a salesperson walked up and asked me what I wanted, I was looking for a brand new car, a Celica, he looked me up and down, I was in jeans and a t shirt… his response was ‘you can’t afford that’ so myself and my mate walked out, three or four weeks later I had my new car, not a Toyota but a nicer Opel Manta around the same price, I wish I’d done like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and gone back to that original showroom and stuck it to that salesman.

      My 03 crown Vic gets around 400 miles to a tank on the highway, with a 4.6 liter V8 and roughly 200 miles or better around town.

    My dad was in the business and in other aspects of automotive. He taught me a few things when it comes to buying a car from a dealer. Such as if the price is way out of line and the sales person tells you "It's a good deal", my father's reply is " Yes it's a great deal- for you not me". that always stuck with me.

    Solid advice! I tell them on question one. "I will only give you my drivers license if you want to sell your car" Normally they change the subject, if not, then I walk away. Couple of things as a buyer, never show excitement, be prepared to walk away at any minute, and do your research, i.e. car price, current finance rates(see if manufacturer has a special rate), what's your Credit Union rate, etc.. If you don't have this state of mind, then don't even go. True story, I walked out over a $100 difference on the out of the door price. They thought I was bluffing. They called me 5min after I left.

    I used to work for Nissan Corporate finance once long ago (my first "big boy" job), and after several years of working with dealers on customer leases and loans, I knew all the tricks they pulled to get into a car. Then the day I needed to get a newer car as my current ride threw a rod, I went to the Nissan dealer down the street from me. I knew what I wanted (1996 Nissan Maxima), and I told the guy that I worked for Nissan finance, so I didn't need him trying to pull all the dealer tricks on me that they normally do.
    Sure enough...guess what the bugger did? EVERYTHING that I told him not to try with me! I called him on every single one of this BS sales tactics, asked for a sales manager...and luckily the manager on duty was one that I worked with A LOT while at work! He took over, got me the car I wanted, at HALF the interest rate, with the warranty AND tire package included int he price, and removed the recon fee. Then he proceeded to rip the sales guy apart for trying to screw over someone who actually puts his deals through! It was a good day. :)

      I’m sure that ripping was just for show. The salesperson likely had to try those BS tricks in case you were bluffing. Doesn’t cost him much if he was wrong.

    Thanks Ray and Zach. Years ago, my ex-wife and I were shopping for a new car. They asked for the keys to look at our vehicle. An hour later after listening to their largely illegal spiel, I asked for my car keys. They said no that they are still inspecting it on a test drive. They repeated no and said that we needed to start signing paperwork before we could see our vehicle. This was before cell phones. I found a pay phone and called my best friend who was a police officer. He arrived quickly with 2 other officers. Things became very difficult very quickly for the salesman, sales manager and finance manager. The car miraculously appeared.
    From then on I have considered most car dealers like wretched pedophiles.
    PREDATORY, MANUPULATIVE, OPPORTUNISTIC SOCIOPATHS
    Most dealers and their staff should be in jail especially after the last 3 years.
    That won't happen likely. Maybe a recession or depression will remove these bad apples.

      Car dealers are practicing this stuff every day on real people. Most pedos (not c-molesters) are just sitting in a basement looking at pictures at their worst. One group is definitely worse than the other.

      From what I read of top post, mark handed the key over to dealer because he wanted a trade in for another vehicle. Otherwise why would dealer wanted your car key if you are there to buy a vehicle?

      I gave the key to our vehicle after they implored us. I just wanted to see what the dealer would offer. I already had a family friend that was interested in the potential trade in. They eventually bought it.
      My ex-wife and I had grown tired of dealer sales tactics. We realized that the staff was trying to cornhole us. They could sense that I'm sure. They refused to return the vehicle to us. That is clearly illegal. My friends from the police arrived. Our car was found. The salesman, sales manager and finance manager spent the evening at the police station. This was not the first time this dealership had done that. The dealership went out of business 5 years later after another franchise for that automaker opened in a nearby parish.

    One tactic I've used with dealers is to tell them with the amount of money I'm spending, that I need to think about it 24 hours before committing to the deal. That allows me to get out of the dealership and to think through whether they're offering a fair deal or not without the pressure of having sales staff around. This tactic also allows you to bargain through text, phone, or email until you're ready to come back in on a deal you're comfortable with. It the deal is even $.01 off what we've agreed to, I'm walking.

      You’re making a lot of assumptions that aren’t true. I had a good idea of my budget and what I was looking for. But, I needed time to process the details of the exact car and transaction. So, I gave myself the time by giving myself an out at the dealership. A salesman has worked hundreds or thousands of transactions and they are good at putting pressure on someone even if it’s a low key approach. Getting away from the dealership and salesperson gives me the opportunity to somewhat level the playing field.

      I remember with one car we bought, the salesman (more honest than most) asked us what it would take to put us in the vehicle we were looking at. We had some money, and I said, Best scenario? Paid for, off the lot." We got the car, paid for. You don't have to go through financing; I had heard that had to happen, from a prior dealer.

      "sorry, i apologize, i forgot that i have an urgent appointment, i appreciate your time" (don't say THANKS FOR YOUR TIME, say I APPRECIATE YOUR TIME)
      then say
      "Give me a call tomorrow and we'll talk further"
      HE HAS ONLY 2 OPTIONS HERE
      1. Let's you leave and says "Ok no problem i'll speak to you tomorrow"
      (UNDERSTAND...... He does this so as to not lose the control and not to create negativity)
      if he creates negativity and becomes the bad guy, he knows you can walk away and blame him for it.
      in this scenario you smile and walk away
      2. he can get the shits and become the bad guy.
      if that happens you say
      "mate, i was willing to be polite, there's no need to be a dickhead, but since you want to be... FORGET THE DEAL, i don't deal with rude people"
      then walk away politely
      THAT'S HOW YOU GET OUT OF IT .
      Your way is very predictable and we know what you're doing

      You managed a big box store and find extended warranties to be a bad thing. I was a corporate trainer and my training video was about not being a salesperson but being honest and quite frankly my home store in a small town in NC became the biggest dealership in the state. I can't tell you how many customers have been thrilled with a Toyota certified extended warranty.

    I tried leaving a dealership once because their math wasn’t adding up at all on a vehicle. I told them I wanted to think about it. The payments were way too high on the vehicle. That’s when the insults started. They finally threw my keys back at me and told me good luck. The absolute worse dealership I’ve ever been too. They spent the next week texting me that they will give me the vehicle for the payments I wanted. I just blocked them and kept the one I had

Find the make you want and if they have some favorable mentions try them out. You will find them! I know of several near me so they are out there!

      @@AZMagic228 I've done sales as well, it's not the dealerships, it's the game. Sales team have to be there, 9 or 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. And like the wait staff at your friendly restaurant, they only make money on tips (commission). Learn the game, have good credit or cash and play the game.
      - Being prepared is 90%. Going in w/o any idea of how car sales works, plays in their favor. Funny, when I became a customer, I knew the game... they don't like being played, but money is green.
      - End of year, end of month, becomes your friend, that one extra sale might bump their 25% commission to 30% retroactive to all their previous sales.
      - Prepare and pretend to enjoy your visit...at least for a few hours, they want to wear you down.
      - Bring your finances, they will make money on loan percentages from their banks. You have the right to refuse extras, esp extended warranties, which most likely will never be honored.
      - Concentrate on out the door price, they really hate that (OTD price)!
      - You can try to pit one dealer against another, but it's sorta like brotherhood of cops, they know by credit reports and word of mouth where you've been and where you might go. Just easier to ask for another salesperson in the same dealership, that, in of itself can make a world of difference. Plus, keep in mind, they'll generally hafto split the commission, but hey, not everyone gets along w the first salesperson they meet.
      - If your particularly not picky the color or brand, research and look for the oldest car on the lot, often time, mgt will put bounties on these cars just to rid them. (100.00 - 250.00 on top of commission to the salesperson who makes the deal).
      - Some of the sales force I've worked with were actually convicted felons that can't find a job anywhere else. Suite n tie with a friendly sociopathic demeanor may seem like they're doing everything they can to help you, when quite the opposite is true. Learn your car, learn how to spot flood damage, bondo, collision damage, pre check w your mechanic is paramount for used stock.
      _ It is ufb that dealers still adhere to old school tactic selling cars, yet, I see it all the time, when helping friends, family, in-laws n outlaws.

    I remember being insulted when they asked for a credit check to test drive cars- I told the sales guy I wouldn’t buy from him & to get me someone else to help me.
    I ended up working with a brand new sales girl who was probably 18. She sold her first car that day & I drove off the lot at 1.99% apr.

    Never tell them how youre gonna pay.
    Never give them more information than the fact that you have a drivers license and are legal to drive and are insured.
    Agree on numbers and have a manager signed invoice PRIOR to even walking into a dealer.
    You do not owe them your time, money, or personal information.

    Second one is illegal in a lot of places too. Stock has to be available at the advertised price. They can (and certainly will) try to upsell you on all sorts of additional tune-ups, reconditionings and additional packages, but they cannot bait you in with a lower advertised price.

    Dealer tried that with me once. I did not want to fill out the credit app. and I told him what my credit score was, and he was still insistent on me filling out the credit app. I walked away. I was younger then, but I knew not to fill out the credit app until I was happy with the car and the numbers because each time, they run your credit your credit score goes down a couple of points.

      As a car salesman another tip for credit is to just give you name, number, and address, so they can do a soft pull with won't affect your credit,. Ps. If your shopping for a car, and you get your credit pulled you have 2 weeks to buy a car, before it effects your credit

    My mother was wanting a good used car so she and I went looking. While wandering around the lot, a salesman approached us. Told him we were going from dealership to dealership, just trying to get an idea of what was out there. We also said that if we heard anything remotely like “What can I do to get you into a car today?” we were leaving. He said sure, sure,no problem. Well, of course, after a few minutes of looking around he couldn’t resist and out came the prohibited phrase. My mother and l looked at each other, then at the salesman, said goodbye, and walked off the lot. His expression was priceless. She finally did find a nice little used car at a great price from a courteous salesman.

    Excellent advice. I've been through this. Even before the test drive the salesman wanted a copy of my drivers license "just to know who I am talking to". I told him no, because I knew he wanted the information to run a credit check. He then wanted to know if I was going to buy today, it was 30 minutes before closing. I told him no, I just wanted a price. He left for a while and came back with a price but at the bottom of the page it said "Price good for today only". I threw the quote back on his desk, stood up and told him he didn't do either of us any favors by doing that and walked out. I bought my truck somewhere else. If the salesman used high pressure urgency to buy right now, walk away. Give yourself time to shop around for the best deal.

    Saburu tried doing this to us. We wanted to build a car and the sales person (who says they aren't a sales person) says we need a credit app to build a car. I told her no. She asked why and I asked why don't you have any cars on your lot? She said because they are selling. I said well if I build a car and don't buy it don't you still sell it? Crickets....let me get the sales manager.....told him the samething never did a credit app....then they said 1k down no refund. I said illegal and show me the documentation that I have to sign that says you get to keep my money....lady says what do you mean? I said I want the documentation for the non-refundable refund so I can have a lawyer look over it....crickets....sales manager.....well it's not really non-refundable...then why do you call it that?

    I stopped at a local dealer to get a price of a car out front. They said I couldn’t get the price before I talked to a salesperson and took a test drive.
    I laughed and walked.

    My wife went to a used car lot earlier last month and asked to drive the cars she wanted to a mechanic to get it checked out. They told her "we don't allow the vehicles to leave the lot, but your mechanic is welcome to come here and take a look".
    We looked at a few review websites and 80% of the cars they sell are lemons.

    A new one (to me, anyway) that I ran into a few years ago was the tracker. This Chicago-area dealer (a red flag of its own) wanted me to pay an additional $1200 for the tracker and get tied into a pricey monthly monitoring plan. Did some research when I got home and found out that it is an inventory-tracking convenience for them, virtually a requirement by their insurance company, and cost a tiny fraction of what they wanted to charge me.

      I was a mechanic a while back and remember the tracking BS. Every single new car had to have one installed. The tracker itself was a very basic "cheap piece of electronics " that couldn't possibly cost more than $5 or $6,at most. And yes,it was initially for the dealership to keep track of their own car inventory, in case it was stolen,etc. They got an insurance break for installing it on all their cars. When the car is then sold they leave the tracker installed and just sell the customer the tracker and service at an astronomical price ,compared to what it cost them.
      They do the same thing with financing. Even if you qualify for a low interest rate, they add an additional rate and keep the balance.
      I experienced this firsthand when my wife and I were buying a car. I calculated the interest rate they were charging us at about 29%!
      We walked,and bought the same car at a different dealership at about 8% interest.
      The difference was over $140 a month in the payment. It was an $18,000 car that would have ended up costing about $30,000 had we went with the original financing! Do your homework.

      I JUST EXPERIENCED THIS FROM TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS! And they BOTH brought it up by saying, "We've had some cars stolen off the lot. So, we added tracking software to all of our vehicles"
      First dealer charged 995 extra for that. I think the second was 895. The second dealer literally said, "So, we pass that fee onto you"
      I didn't think it was fair--not to me or any other customers. If someone wants to be tracked, offer it as an optional service. But don't make us pay for it just bc your lots got targeted.
      Thankfully, after negotiations, I was able to get It removed

    The driver's license in Georgia used to have your SSN on it. You had to give the dealer your license for insurance purposes before a test drive. I told the dealer do not run my credit unless we have agreed on a price. It ended up that a few things were not to my liking about the newer car, so I did not buy or even seriously consider it. A few days later I did a credit check and these was a 'soft hit' on my credit from that dealer. I was mad and called the dealer and told them I would never set foot in their dealership again and would tell everyone I could about them. A few months later, they went out of business because a lot of people hated their high pressure sales tactics in our small city.

      I have my credit permanently frozen with all 3 bureaus. I only place a temporary unthaw for a day or two when I need it. Too many scammers and data breaches out there.

    Dealerships are, also, the worst place to have work done on your vehicle. I already knew that from my dad teaching me years ago, so I use a small shop I get to know well and can trust.
    One particular year, the place I usually used for new tires didn't have the tires I needed, so I had to bring my truck to a dealership. They put on the tires while I waited with my daughter (she was 7 at the time).
    The manager came out to talk to me and let me know they were almost done. He asked if I was in a hurry because if I had a few extra minutes, they could change the oil, too. It was more expensive than my husband doing it, which he always did, but he was on deployment at the time and still had 3 months until he got home. The truck was already there so I agreed.
    At some point in our conversation, he started talking to my daughter. She told him she was excited about the new tires (she loves cars like me) because we were going on a class field trip at the end of the week. I was going to be one of the drivers. Keep that in mind ...
    We waited a while longer until I was finally called to the back where the garage was. The manager brought me to my truck while telling me about the tires and oil change. I noticed my truck was still on the lift, so I knew immediately he was about to pull some kind of B.S. He proceeds to tell me there is a crack in my transmission and it's dangerous to drive with it like that, "especially with all those kids for the field trip."
    I just stared at him. I think it was pretty obvious to him that I wasn't buying it, so he proceeded to point to the ground and say, "That's all the transmission fluid that spilled out. We added some more for you, but it won't stay. You really need to fix that crack. We can start today and get it back to you before Friday." I looked down at the black fluid (dirty oil from the oil change) and back up at him. I held my tongue when I really wanted to tear him apart for using my kids against me.
    I noticed the mechanic who had been working on my truck stare at him for a minute like he was in disbelief of the B.S. the guy was saying. I told him I didn't have the money and I would get my husband to take a look when he got home from deployment. He insisted it couldn't wait for my husband and then said they could offer me a loan on the cost. I looked over at the mechanic again because I was curious if he was like his manager. He rolled his eyes, shook his head, and walked away. You know it's bad when his own people were against him.
    I actually had to argue with the guy about not touching anything else on my truck. He was clearly annoyed and said he would do a final check on the work and have it back to me. I said, "No, I want HIM to finish the work. He's done fine. He can finish. I would prefer you not going near my truck again." Several of the mechanics kind of snickered and the one working on my truck came back. The mechanic told me he was all done and would bring it around the front for me. He lowered it before the manager could say anything else.
    I think if the manager had not brought me back there and had that conversation with me in the waiting room, he would have lied to the mechanics about what I wanted. I might have even believed him except that I know the difference between oil and transmission fluid, and his condescending behavior pissed me off. Incidentally, that same transmission is still going strong after 13 years.

    I went to a Toyota dealership looking for a Highlander. Loved it, and even my parents liked it. Went in to do the paperwork and started getting the “sales” talk. Oh this added on, you need this, and cant forget this. It had added like 10k to what the car said it would be. I walked out. The guy followed me out trying to talk me off the debt cliff. Even told my parents to speak to me. My mom turned to the salesman and said, “No, you tried to swindle him, we are all in sales, he hates being treated that way and he will now tell everyone how he was treated here.” I was literally turning the car on and the owner of the dealership ran over. Needless to say, I drove off with a much reduced beautiful Highlander and still have it 20 years later.

    Went to Fred Bean's Toyota in Flemington to purchase a car for my daughter. The car was 30k, but the salesman told me they discounted it to 25k since they had it on the lot for a while and they were looking to sell it. When they came out with the numbers it was over 31k. The real kicker was a "Comprehensive Protection Package" which was $1995.00, it covered wheel, tire and paint protection. They also had 3 other charges including window etching 😂! I said I don't want it and they had the balls to tell me they can't remove the comprehensive package!?!? I said... "So you're forcing me to buy an extra product I don't want?" I walked out and didn't look back!

      Ya i was after a used car awhile back and this one nearby 'friendly' dealership had one I was interested in at a price I was good with until they brought out a nickel and dime list of little non optional addons totaling about 4k including several things like pin striping, window tinting and putting a decal of their dealership on the bumper (seriously they wanted to charge to advertise for them) that weren't on the car already. Walked out once they made it clear I couldn't have the car as is and bought the same car at another dealership abit further down the road for just a tad bit more then the first ones starting price.

I was financing this replacement car with the $8200 I recieved from my insurance company for my totalled previous car. I went to the dealer to see the car, they tried to get me to do a credit check, and I refused, telling them IF I bought the car, it would be CASH ONLY deal. I drove the car, and liked it and decided to look into buying it. I asked for an OTD price listing.. Apparently that threw them a curve ball, where it took them about 15 minutes.. When I got the list I nearly fell on the floor laughing.. For this $6995 car, their OTD price was OVER $10K. I told them I did not want, nor will I pay for, all of the bullshit addons this list had. I said I have an $8200 hard limit on what I will pay for this car. They said we can't go that low, so I started for the door. I got to the door of my rental car when the sales manager came out and said "will you buy the car at $8200?" I said yes and got the car for $8200.. You gotta be FIRM with these crooks..

    We were locked into a dealership office and never even had a test drive on the car we went to see. They wouldn't give us a price unless we would agree to name the monthly payment we could afford and fill out paperwork. We got up and stood at the door until someone else from the dealership came in and we held the door and walked out. Next time we were through that town the dealership had been burned to the ground and we thought apparently we were not the only people they treated that way.

    Last year we needed to find a newer Tahoe as our 2007 was on its last legs. I did as much research as I could. We finally found the one we wanted and went to the dealer. Of course started with not letting them have my keys to give me a value on mine. I did research on the trade in value and we got financed through our credit union so we were good there. They were actually pretty good once they realized we had our ducks in a row. We got a little more for the trade in than I asked for and we did not get any extras. To top it off we paid for the taxes outright so we only financed the price of the car. I walked out feeling pretty good since I always felt like a loser the last few times I went to a dealer to buy. Lucky I knew the tricks but I still think I can do even better next time.

    Great common sense, down to earth video! When they want to run your credit, it's called, I believe, a "hard check". A hard check counts against your credit and can lower your FICO score. I applied and was approved for a new credit card. They informed me, after I asked, that yes it was a hard check, and it can affect my FICO score. If I go to multiple dealerships shopping for cars, the credit application checks will be on my report, and will be noted on the report. My credit is my business! I run my free annual credit report prior to vehicle shopping. As soon as they say we always run your credit for a test drive, I'm out the door so fast, I change the earth's rotation!

      True it's possible to do a soft check, but they don't need that either. Arguing with them about what the check might do to my score is like telling them it's would be acceptable to run it when they promise it won't hurt. Now I internally feel I must call them a liar or let them waste my time.
      I make one hint that I want to select a car before doing anything beyond showing I have a license, and start to walk. If they don't need my business I feel sorry for customers who feel the need to work with them.

    What the dealership doesn't tell you is they run your credit score multiple times and cause your score to drop. They also intentionally look for high interest rates to make a bigger commission even if you are offering a majority of a down payment in Cash. Cash is king yet they keep on pushing High interest rates and endless add ons to further drive up the price. A endless greed factor

    in 2011 I purchased my last car from a dealership. I had suffered through this endless BS from the "team" way to often. It is a buyer beware situation at it's worst. I now see cars for what they really are, a "neccessary waste of money" and purchase 2 to 4 year old low mileage preowned from local individuals. I have saved many many thousands of dollars on interest and high payments doing these cash buys and have not had a single major issue. Thank you Car Edge for shining the light on this painful process.

    The has been ONE dealership I have dealt with in the past (they've since been sold to a different company).
    They played NONE of the games mentioned in this video. Let me test drive the vehicles over a weekend. NO 'extra' charges, wanting to run credit, etc, etc.
    THAT'S why I ended up buying 4 vehicles from them over the years. FANTASTIC sales people!!!
    I attempted to buy from a couple of other dealerships and it was a crapshow both times. I walked and never looked back.

      Toyota rav 4 51,000 miles bald tires 2 owners rusted underneath filthy on the inside paint sun damaged OTD $30k. Sitting for more than 90 days. Mitsubishi dealership in St. Cloud MN. I was told this car will run over 200,000 miles. They didn't try to sell me a Mitsubishi. I bought a mirage 4 years ago for $11.000 paid cash out the door. My car has 95, 000 miles and running strong. I change the oil every 5,000 miles and serviced it on time overall. I'm waiting to purchase at the end of December with 1/2 down.

    To be honest, I would’ve walked after the very first red flag. If you want me to fill out a credit application form even before a test drive it I’m walking. Two other red flags is is when they will not allow you to take the car to an independent mechanic for a thorough inspection and beef when they won’t let me plug my scantool in to see if there’s any hidden codes or to check live data

    When I bought my truck I searched and researched for months first and then found the truck I was looking for advertised on line for a great price at a dealer a couple towns away. When I got there they tried the old I don’t think we have that one anymore but we have others. I said that truck hit your website after midnight last night and I was here when you opened so it better be on the lot and then remarkably they found it lol. But then they started with all the games they play but I played hard ball and didn’t give in and after a few hours I drove away in my new truck for a fantastic price. I still love it seven years later.😊

    Excellent advice! Have your financing plan (from bank or credit union). Make a list (of must-haves, & max you're willing to spend), bring a helpful friend who can drag you out of there if you show signs of weakening, pack snacks, and most importantly, TAKE BREAKS. No need to rush on a large purchase. I never hesitate to go home and SLEEP ON IT.

      My wife and I went in a couple of hours before lunch... 10am to sign on papers we already had a deposit on. The finance manager kept dicking us around to sign for an extended warranty, knowing we probably didn't eat lunch... 4, count them, 4 hours; 2pm and the finance manager was still dicking us around. Me being hungry worked against him. Both my wife and I were pissed. Told him to just print out the f-ing finance papers or we were walking. As soon as I started dropping the F bomb, things started getting serious on his end. He huffed and walked out and sent his boss in to calm us down. He stepped in and I immedieately asked him why the F was it taking 4 F ing hours to sign the GD papers. He didn't know what to say. He left and the finance manager came back in, apologized and printed the papers we needed so sign. After that, he said, every thing was OK, and we could hug it out. LOL. I told him to get the F-ing keys so we could leave.

      Yes have had car dealerships hold me hostage for hours with have another cup of coffee while I talk to my sales manager at which time they would send in another salesman to try to convince me to buy. Every time I tried to leave they would send in another salesman until the guy I started with would come in with some sort of problem like we need more down. So. Yes take back up with you.

      Awesome advise! My Daddy took me in and he did exactly what you said - he had all of the paperwork printed out, a calculator, extra worksheets, pens, pencils, eraser, extra sheet of paper, all of the details of the car, etc printed out and ready to go. He's an Engineer so when the sales guy started to write fast, write all over the paper, and then draw a line for him to sign so he could "talk to the boss", he calmly took out another worksheet and filled out everything again and requested to speak to the "boss" using that paperwork. I learned long ago, when Daddy is in thinking mode, he will not be rushed, he will not negotiate until he understands what all the numbers mean, and he has zero problems telling a person to "sit down and cool out". While Daddy was doing his calculations, the salesdude said "wow, sir, is that a Superbowl ring" (it was an East Texas ring) to which he replied yes without missing a beat. "don't you want your daughter to have the best car we have" Daddy replied, "she doesn't matter right now". He got everything I wanted, he got a higher price for the trade in and a lower OTD price on the car. The contract was almost ripped up when he insulted my Daddy by saying "sir, if this check doesn't clear, we will have a problem". After my Mom and I gasped, Daddy said "my signature is my word. Is this a problem?". I still have the folder and all of the paperwork from this masterful 14 hour negotiation.

    One time I called around to find the car I wanted in the color I wanted. A dealer said they had the exact one I was looking for so I scheduled an appointment to go see it. When I got in I got the "fill out this credit report" thing - and didn't. I asked to see the car. "Well, it'll take about 2 hours to get it here, it's at one of our dealerships in the North Bay. We can start doing the paperwork now so we're all ready."
    I walked out, with the sales guy tagging behind me. "Why are you leaving?".
    "I don't make deals with liars."
    Then his manager came out and tried to block me from leaving. As I drove off he yelled, "Good luck getting the car you wanted in that color; this is the only one in the area.".
    I didn't get the color I wanted originally, but I got to deal with some good people.

    I never made it to red flags 🚩 2 or 3. I would have been out the door at the mention of requiring a credit report to take a test drive. In fact, I like to deflect any financial questions while looking a car over, period.

    At least he told you why. The guy we had didn’t even tell us until after We did the test drive. They said the online price was only if you finance with them but they added fees that added 5000 protection package to the price due to my higher interest rate. I already had financing so I asked for the OTD price with my financing. Almost 7000 more. I walked and didn’t mind. what burned me up was them calling me every freaking day for a month knocking 250 dollars of here and there and then making it seem like it was the deal of the century to pay 6500 more than what they advertised.

    The best car deal I ever made was on a new car purchase during Covid. No dealers had any inventory and any car had to be built to order. I knew what the cost was when ordered, no mark ups or add on’s. Left my deposit and waited four weeks. Car came in and we sat down to do the paperwork. Already was pre approved at 3% if they could match or beat it fine, if not would use my credit union. They matched it. Of course they tried their sales pitch for additional gimmicks such as tire and wheel protection and all that which I declined. All I wanted extra was factory backed warranty for the life of the loan. I was in and out in less then an hour. If I ever have to do another car deal I’m going to do it exactly the same way again. Not about to deal with dealer mark ups or any of that other BS, plus I get the car I want and ordered.

      Same! Purchased a car right before the shutdown and it was 4 hours in and out the door. Knew what I wanted, knew the price OTD, knew my credit score and pre-approval and wasn’t there for negotiations. I picked 3 cars to test drive before I got there, told them I had pre-approval and would require they pay my registration. It was a done deal and the only reason it took 4 hours was because I couldn’t decide between 2 cars. I test drove 1 an additional time and picked that one. Easy peasy. It was seamless and wonderful! Pre-approval, research, knowing your numbers and calling ahead helped tremendously!

    Wish you made this video a month ago. My no sales commission Toyota dealer just pulled some of this stuff on me. They surprisingly lower the interest rate significantly when we told them their rates were insane and I wasn’t buying any extended warranties. And the prices for the warranties all dropped 1/2 off . They are all scammers never been to one who isn’t

      And you didn't reward that scammer by buying from them and helping them stay in business. You walked away- using that lowered price as the starting position with an honest dealer - right?

      When I bought my Tacoma in 2020 they tried the ole if you get the extended warranty it’ll lower your interest rate scam. And it worked, first new car so I was a little naive. Fortunately about a year later I saw a RUclips video discussing that exact matter. I already got them on falsely performing oil changes and tire rotations. So I called, and everybody gave me the runaround until I spoke with the guy running the place. About 30 mins after our conversation the ext warranty was reimbursed to my account balance. Shortly after that they changed names too. Oh yeah I forgot the low price sticker yet never told me a total just monthly. I paid full retail no deal, but I got it pre pandemic and I didn’t catch the business some people got. Paid it off 2 yrs early and learned how they operate. Mechanics and car dealers even when buying new 😑

    NEVER deal with dealerships! They are like middleman and do very little, but mark up the vehicles they are trying to sell you. Their overhead expenses are passed on to the consumer. Instead, by online directly from the factory like Tesla offers. That way you cut out the middleman and save tons of money! Do you know why Amazon does so well? They don't have retail locations and they sell directly to you enabling them to sell their products cheaper to you. That is the way business is done well.

    The first thing i ever learned about going to buy a car from any dealership (new or used) is they need to sell the car to you more than you need to buy it from them. Therefore you as the buyer have all of the power and don't hesitate to walk out and go to a different dealership. Ppl need to keep this in mind when car shopping so that they don't accept whatever the dealership tells themat face value. Ive had very good experiences with all of my car purchases. Ive gotten what I wanted at the price I wanted or I walked. I also do my research online before I go in so I usually know what I'm looking for when I get there.

      In this "information age", there's simply no excuse to be an ignorant "walk-in" when buying a vehicle. It does take a little EFFORT though; that might be a problem for many buyers.

      They NEED to sell cars. You WANT to buy a car. NEEDS always trump WANTS. That puts the buyer in the stronger position. You can walk. They can't.

    About 7 years ago I saw a car advertised online at a new to the area, used car dealership. Like many dealerships nowadays they advertised that they put EVERY car they offer for sale through a rigorous pre-sale inspection. I liked the car, though it had high miles for the price and I thought that that would work in my favor when bargaining on a price. After the test drive the salesman directed my towards the sales manager. Before going in to start negotiations I asked what kind of " doc fee " they charged. Answer was $895. I balked at paying what I felt was an excessive fee on an UNDER $5,000 car. The sales manager said that "... everyone pays it, even he had to pay it when he bought a car there. " I told him he was crazy if they charged him $900 and that I wouldn't pay it.
    To shorten a long story: a few months later that dealership closed and eventually all the other dealerships in that fledgling chain closed.
    A $900 document fee on a 9 year old used car is ridiculous.
    A $1995 fee in this scenario is equally laughable.

    This is why you always have your financing done ahead of time. I always went through my credit union that gave me a blank check up to the amount I was approved for. All you had to do was negotiate the out the door price. Lowest price dealer wins. Makes negotiating simple and easy.

    Be aware when the salesman leaves you in office with your partner. They will leave their phone on so they can listen to your conversation.

      I've always thought that. I've used to my advantage by saying to my wife that the "other" dealership was cheaper, had less miles, better interest rate, etc,etc. The manager ALWAYS came in with a better deal. If they want to play games, play by their rules!

      and if you have any doubts
      1. Pull the power out of the back off the phone, Leaving it slightly connected but not connected
      or
      2. if there is now power cable, disconnect the blue ethernet cable (as it's using P.O.E. Power over Ethernet)
      the phone screen with turn off when done successfully
      he's playing a game
      You play the game right back
      what'she gonna say ? "hey, why did you disconnect our phone while we were eaves dropping on you ?" LOL,

    Wow I am glad the last dealership I went to had decent folks who could not have been nicer. No pressures at all. They were way more concerned with me liking the car and not pushing a sale and that is why I bought it!

    Remember going to look at a car after talking to the sales guy on the phone
    Went in there and it turned out the guy I was now talking too was a different salesperson.
    The phone guy walks up like mafia and says hey you are my customer.
    My wife said let’s go
    We just got up and literally ran out the door and didn’t look back.
    True story bro😅

    I went with my son to buy a newer used car for his graduation. Cut to the chase, the salesperson refused to take my cash offer on a unit of choice. We left the dealer… about an hour away… by the time we got home, the manager had called and asked for a chance to make the deal. Turns out, we took the deal because it was almost $2300 less than I was prepared to pay. Two days later, at the dealership, I noticed salesman one wasn’t around. He had been fired…

    I have been selling cars for 16 years and never said any of these things to customers unless they were teenagers trying to test drive a Hellcat we would never ask for credit app first. Also reconditioning fees are worked into the dealer cost not charged extra after the selling price of the car.

    I work in a car warranty company, and when he was going over the Tire and Wheel, I was laughing so hard, so many of our customers call in giving me the lies the sales person told them. Always read a warranty they want you to get before signing.

    Salesmen aren't that different than telemarketing scammers. Talk fast, assertively and use as much jargon (but make it seem like it's not a big deal and SOP) and get you to do a bunch of stuff you're not interested in doing just to see and/or test drive a car you're interested in. In these situations, I always remind myself that they are trying to get me to buy THAT DAY and maximize margins for their business (ad ons, etc.). I have to remember that much of the power lies with me. I'm the one spending money or not, so I need to manage the entire process and whether I just walk away.

    I bought my last car from a dealer in 2009.😂 It has been a great car, and we still drive it. I will be watching these videos to prepare for our next. My husband would fall for whatever they said, but I plan to be prepared.

    Good advice. I had a dealer one time who wanted to appraise my trade-in right away. They held onto the keys after the appraisal and wanted to negotiate the deal while holding onto my keys. i refused and demanded my keys back. I should not have even mentioned a trade-in before the deal was complete. I bought from a different dealer.

    I dealership I worked at actually had "factory" invoices printed at a local shop, then massaged all the options and pricing. This was placed in the side window and people thought it was right from the manufacturer.

    I once had a new/used car dealer refuse to return my drivers license after I did a test drive. I ended up walking out without my DL. The sales guy followed me outside and eventually returned my DL. Needless to say, they did not get my business.

      That happened to me. I drove down to the police station. Told them what was going on. He brought me my licence a few minutes later, and this was about 20 years ago before I knew anything about buying a car.

    I was a car sales rep from 2015-18. You are 100% right. People don’t educate themselves enough before walking into a dealership. The internet has tons of information!! You don’t need a test drive to figure out if you like the car . Also get a loan pre approval and find out the real cost of that vehicle BEFORE you go to the dealer.

      I am one who does need a test drive, thank you. Visibility, reach (I am a short person at 5 feet tall), and make sure the car fits me. Please don't use blanket statements; they're annoying and untrue, thanks.

    My biggest red flag in my times of buying cars. I was buying my first new car in my name. I was at a local Ford dealership for a new focus hatchback. When we got to talking about financing (just me and the salesman), he wouldn't give me a straight answer on what my interest rate would be. I had already filled out a credit app and he couldn't give at least a range. Manager came over and did nothing to help. I said I'd like to think it over. I asked for my keys and was denied. After arguing and asking for my keys again, I threatened to call the police. Got my keys back and never returned

      @@joguarhs I had gone to a dealer. I was in the financing discussion phase. they had taken my keys to inspect the car for an appraisal. When they couldn't give me any straight answers about the terms for financing, I opted to leave. My keys were being refused for return. Didn't get them back until I threatened to call the cops.
