I LOVE music intended for baritones to sing. So often I'm stuck with traditional 4 part harmonies where tenor can just get too high and bass too low. It was a joy singing this classic along with you all 😁 Thank you!

You should see if you can find a men’s choir locally. I used to find that in SATB scoring, but the parts are far more baritone friendly in TTBB scoring. It also exposed me to more falsetto work, where I now flex between singing Baritone 2 or Countertenor.

@@Tferg93 i wasn’t trying to flex my vocal range ( which is frankly quite mediocre) to insult them or establish my musical superiority, i was just voicing my surprise at their statement and i apologise if it came out in a way that made me seem like an asshole. However, one thing i cannot abide is taking verbal abuse and not responding, so here goes.
      1. I wasn’t trying to make it a competition, as i have just explained
      2. My application of the word ‘tessitura’ was the correct term to use in this case. I’m sorry that my vocabulary made me seem more intelligent, i’ll stick to using the dumbed down definitions from now on, as not to hurt anyone’s feelings. (Sarcasm if you couldn’t tell, it’s not easy to convey these things in writing)
      3. What do you mean “to make you sound like you know what you’re talking about”, i *do* know what i’m talking about, hence the use of the word ‘tessitura’
      4. I know what timbre means, it was completely unnecessary and condescending to explain it to me.
      5. Timbre is most certainly important as a singer, however, if you have a range of only 1 octave or so, you can’t really sing anything anyways, so i believe them to be equally important. (I say this, but troye sivan basically made an entire career based on the timbre of his voice, i doubt he even has a tessitura of more that 1 1/2 octaves).
On the section of ‘advice’, thank you at least for the attempt to help me, i do appreciate the sentiment, however as i said, you misunderstood to original intention of my comment, partly by my own fault. I also do believe it to be important to encourage others in their endeavours, both to improve their mental state and to maintain your level of functionality in society. However, i also believe that living life as a kind, encouraging and perfect person is incredibly boring. I often find enjoyment in laughing at other’s misfortune, and i think other people do too. I’m well aware of the malicious nature of this practice, but i am content with my current level of morality and i believe it to be acceptable to consciously make the choice not to be the best one can be on an ethical level.

@@zachrichardson7099 Hilariously! The growing awareness for behaving appropriately, the fear of failing in that and the self-righteousness in making others realise that failure make all of us spill words over words saying basically nothing... a cultural phenomenon.

@@Tferg93 I am a member in 2 gospel-choirs. We sing with 4-voice-melodys in SATB. I am singing the Bassvoice. Tenorvoice is too high for me. What does this mean "countertenor"?

Oh my, oh my! This song means a world for me. Long story short: my grandfather was a supporter for the construction of a British oriented college in Hungary, in times of overwhelming German influence. My father studied there, in Sárospatak, and so did I. We had the same English teacher, who had had his English studies en Edinborough, and became an enthusiast for Scotland. He spoke about the similarities of the history between Scotland, and Hungary, and had taught us Scottish songs. We sang farewell to school with this very song. Thank you so much, it was therapeutic singing with you. By the way, I have been a fan since the 70's of the last century, when The King's Singers visited Budapest. I am prehistorical :D.

The story of this sad traditional Scottish song is about an exchange of prisoners, in the wars between Scotland and England, which continued even after their constitutional union.
Rich prisoners of war could be ransomed. Poor ones were put to death.
The song is in the voice of a poor Scottish prisoner of war, to his more fortunate comrade who is being ransomed.
The one being ransomed will get back to Scotland on 'the high road' i.e. alive.
The singer will get back on 'the low road' i.e. in death.
Man, them Celts sure knew how to write some wrist-slitters.

I really enjoyed this superb arrangement. I basically had no problem in singin the bottommost part . But, I enjoyed sightreading the next 4 parts upward. It was, to say the least, challenging. Even at 67 years of age, I can nail the alro range.

I was fortunate to find this group in the early 1970s while studying Renaissance music. It’s been interesting following each transition. I love a good countertenor (not a tenor squeaking out the notes). I’m in the USA & fortunate to have all the early CDs.

Sorry for the 4arlier bravado, but I wantedshow that this arrangement was as partiicularly gorgeous, no matter what part one sings, or age of the singer. The first time I heard this group was in the mid 1970's. I listended to the recording of ""I'm Diff'rent", by Randy Newman. That was the funniest arrangement, I'd ever heard. Especially the last line that the Baritone sings. "Trouble with tenors, they're all the same."

  • @Xandian

I randomly saw this video come up in my suggested today, and had a very fond memory of this piece in highschool.
Rarely did our mens choir get male songs that were the Baritone gets to shine. Almost all of our pieces were more modern and tended to be Tenor showing, but this piece was a treat for our little group of 2 baritones. I took the high road, and my friend took the low, hahaha.
Needless to say I sang along with you guys, and was pleasantly surprised that my voice isn't as rusty as I thought it would be!

Brilliant idea, and what a joy to watch and sing along with. Ok, I didn't actually sing because my husband is sleeping next to me, it's nearly 1am and I don't want to wake any of my young kids. But my heart sang and my brain was reading music and finding the pitch and I am very rusty with all things choral, but it was still a delight. Just the mental cleanse I needed before sleep.
