I sang this song at my wife's funeral. I used Peter's vocals as a guide to practice and made it through. Though I and my true love will never meet again I thank you for having this here so that I could honor my love in song one last time.

Then the next line is "and I'll be in Scotland before you" meaning he's going to be in heaven/Scotland. Its about the battle of Culloden in the 1700s. We sing it at weddings, funerals and any chance we can at parties. It's to let the English and the rest of the world know that we will always be free as long as we have Scotland in our hearts.
I am a southerner from North Carolina in the United States. Like many southerners, I have much scottish blood via the Scots-Irish settlers that emigrated from Ireland in the 1700s, after previously coming from Lowland Scotland. We southerners will always feel a love for and special relationship with Scotland. The Celtic songs ring true in my heart. Much love and well wishes, y'all.

My grandpa passed away a few days ago and it has been really hard. I went through our past messages online and stumbled upon a link he sent me a few years ago to this video. I first visit and lived in Scotland for 6 months in my youth and now 38 years later and living a continent away, I still often tell myself :” My heart is not here. My heart is in the highlands a chasing the deer, among the bens, lochs, glens and the heart-centered folks”………I am now well into my senior years and am currently revisiting this majestic land . Scotland has not changed and its magic still alive and people still warm, kind and friendly. I am seriously thinking about moving here and live out my remaining days in this land that connects heaven and earth. My wife (who is of Scottish blood) and I traveled to Scotland in 2007 and on our trip actually walked on the Culloden Battlefield (outside of Inverness). To stop and think that so many died there, we stopped and had a silent prayer....

If you do some research you will find that music in general and music that is particular to an individual person does miraculous things for those persons suffering dementia, Alzheimer's and memory issues. Just try it.
I used to work with dementia and Alzheimer's patients and we had this one patient who mumbled all the time, but when you played anything by the Eagles, he would sing in a beautiful tenor voice.

There was an 87 year old man that couldn’t remember his wife, but they put him in front of a piano and he could play a song he learned when he was 8 years old. He didn’t remember the song until he was finished playing it. It has nothing to do with tissue in his case, it has to do with muscle memory. And that is why you can still do something you haven’t done in years. I played clarinet in 7th grade, and switched to choir up until now. I’m a senior in choir at my school, and I’m a soprano. I picked up a clarinet last week and was still able to play my solo for solo and ensemble from 6 years ago.

@@lizgawin899 I'm not a doctor, just worked with Alzheimer's and Dementia patients as a nurse. However, if you research those two diseases, both of them are progressive. In the case of your Aunt, she may have already been showing signs and symptoms of the disease and the stress of losing several family members in rapid succession could have caused her to decline very quickly. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

The song may be Scottish - but it's something we all know and understand deep within our hearts. Love is eternal. The reason this song is so wonderful is because the notes are happy, proud, and determined despite the context. It's a perfect mingling of happiness and sadness. It is comfort and loss.
I come back to this all the time but I remember the first time I showed this to my mom. She started crying immediately and I wasn't sure why. Turns out my grandad ( who is of Scottish descent ) used to sing this to her all the time when she was a child. Really love this version. I traveled Scotland some years ago, driving from Inverness around the lochs, hiking in the Aviemore area. I went to Culloden in recognition the of battle. Reminded me of Gettysburg. Beautiful country and enjoyed talking with the people.

My grandmother used to sing this song when I was a child, we walked somwhere together when travelling and i walked on a higher way than her. As a child I never understood the meaning (i am german), and till today I never heared or knew the full song. With this song I remember the great time together we had when I was younger and she, too. Loch Lomond is about two Scotsmen who were captured by the English. One was killed (they hadn't done anything wrong, other than being Scottish clansmen), and the other was sent to tell the Scottish about it. The high road is the road for the living. The low road is the road traveled by the dead.
This is absolutely amazing. The first time I heard it, I was at my best friends memorial service. This song fit him so well...and I truly believed he was my true love. I loved him more than anything. I can’t listen to this song without crying, but that’s alright. It’s a beautiful piece and you are truly talented.

My High School graduation is tomorrow. Our mascot is the HighLander. During graduation, Loch Lomond and Scotland the Brave will be played in addition with the “traditional” graduation music. Hearing this song is bittersweet. It gives me hope of my future ahead but reminds me that I’ll likely never see many of my peers or teachers again. Beautiful, and well done. The emotions I’m experiencing are very strong.

This reminds me of my grandma. When my brother and I were young kids she used to watch us on our summer vacations. She was always singing and a great vocalist at that. She is gone now but beautiful songs like this remind me of her and when times were a little simpler hanging out on those sunny days.

This is close to my favourite version. Must say, I'm a pretty big fan of yours Peter. Anyway, just went to the actual Loch Lomond on tour and it was magnificent. Our guide told us the story of this song and it was especially poignant. The story goes like this, in the 1600 and 1700s, there was a rebellion known as the Jacobite uprising which wanted the, some say, rightful king, the Catholic James back on the throne. Now during this uprising, two Jacobite soldiers were caught by the English and sent down, I believe, to London to be 'interrogated' and then executed. Back in those days, you could probably expect to your enhanced interrogation to be truly creative and absolutely brutal. Along the way, the soldiers discovered that the men were actually brothers so instead of executing both, they decided to play a (incredibly cruel) trick on them. They told the brothers that in the morning, they could either both be executed, or they could choose one to live. The cruel bit being that the brothers themselves had to decide. The lyrics 'you'll take the high road" refer to the mountain ways and the small roads which would have less patrols or so and allow the surviving brother to get home safely. The low road refers to the road where the spirits traverse. In the end, it was decided that the younger brother should go back to his wife and young children while the older brother would be executed. His last request was the lyrics of this song. 'Me and my true love will never meet again, on the bonny bonny banks of Loch Lomond'... I suppose the good news is that at least we know the second brother survived to bring us this song.

Scotland has not changed and its magic still alive and people still warm, kind and friendly. I am seriously thinking about moving here and live out my remaining days in this land that connects heaven and earth. My wife (who is of Scottish blood) and I traveled to Scotland in 2007 and on our trip actually walked on the Culloden Battlefield (outside of Inverness). To stop and think that so many died there, we stopped and had a silent prayer....

If you do some research you will find that music in general and music that is particular to an individual person does miraculous things for those persons suffering dementia, Alzheimer's and memory issues. Just try it.
I used to work with dementia and Alzheimer's patients and we had this one patient who mumbled all the time, but when you played anything by the Eagles, he would sing in a beautiful tenor voice.

Anonymous Libertarian research shows that music is a wonderful medicine. There was an 87 year old man that couldn’t remember his wife, but they put him in front of a piano and he could play a song he learned when he was 8 years old. He didn’t remember the song until he was finished playing it. It has nothing to do with tissue in his case, it has to do with muscle memory. And that is why you can still do something you haven’t done in years. I played clarinet in 7th grade, and switched to choir up until now. I’m a senior in choir at my school, and I’m a soprano. I picked up a clarinet last week and was still able to play my solo for solo and ensemble from 6 years ago.

@@lizgawin899 I'm not a doctor, just worked with Alzheimer's and Dementia patients as a nurse. However, if you research those two diseases, both of them are progressive. In the case of your Aunt, she may have already been showing signs and symptoms of the disease and the stress of losing several family members in rapid succession could have caused her to decline very quickly. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

I come back to this all the time but I remember the first time I showed this to my mom. She started crying immediately and I wasn't sure why. Turns out my grandad ( who is of Scottish descent ) used to sing this to her all the time when she was a child. She wants this song played at her funeral so as sad as it is ive practiced this for years so I can be the one to sing it when the unfortunate time comes.

Really love this version. I traveled Scotland some years ago, driving from Inverness around the lochs, hiking in the Aviemore area. I went to Culloden in recognition the of battle. Reminded me of Gettysburg. Beautiful country and enjoyed talking with the people.

My grandmother used to sing this song when I was a child, we walked somwhere together when travelling and i walked on a higher way than her. As a child I never understood the meaning (i am german), and till today I never heared or knew the full song. With this song I remember the great time together we had when I was younger and she, too.

If you look up the song, there are several theories on the meaning of the song, several of them rather sad, but nothing will change how beautiful it is or the cherished memories people have that came from it.
Loch Lomond is about two Scotsmen who were captured by the English. One was killed (they hadn't done anything wrong, other than being Scottish clansmen), and the other was sent to tell the Scottish about it. The high road is the road for the living. The low road is the road traveled by the dead.

I am personally insecure when it comes to my voice, but it is pretty good overall I was playing a VR game and I started singing to other people and it and they loved it that really helped boost my self confidence.
I fear singing infront of others. But i absolutely love to sing, I got busted a couple of weeks ago on the road with a metal song, by a fellow metal head. Made me feel good when he wanted to know if i was in a band so he could go see them. Nope this shy 30 year old just likes to sing to almost anything.

This reminds me of my grandma. When my brother and I were young kids she used to watch us on our summer vacations. She was always singing and a great vocalist at that. Anyway, just went to the actual Loch Lomond on tour and it was magnificent. Our guide told us the story of this song and it was especially poignant.
The story goes like this, in the 1600 and 1700s, there was a rebellion known as the Jacobite uprising which wanted the, some say, rightful king, the Catholic James back on the throne.
Now during this uprising, two Jacobite soldiers were caught by the English and sent down, I believe, to London to be 'interrogated' and then executed. Back in those days, you could probably expect to your enhanced interrogation to be truly creative and absolutely brutal. Along the way, the soldiers discovered that the men were actually brothers so instead of executing both, they decided to play a (incredibly cruel) trick on them. They told the brothers that in the morning, they could either both be executed, or they could choose one to live. The cruel bit being that the brothers themselves had to decide.
The lyrics 'you'll take the high road" refer to the mountain ways and the small roads which would have less patrols or so and allow the surviving brother to get home safely. The low road refers to the road where the spirits traverse.
In the end, it was decided that the younger brother should go back to his wife and young children while the older brother would be executed. His last request was the lyrics of this song. 'Me and my true love will never meet again, on the bonny bonny banks of Loch Lomond'...
I suppose the good news is that at least we know the second brother survived to bring us this song.
