@@scifiwriter6092 Here's a explanation I found, ""Loch Lomond" tells the story of two Scottish soldiers who were so imprisoned. One of them was to be executed, while the other was to be set free. According to Celtic legend if someone dies in a foreign land, his spirit will travel to his homeland by "the low road" - the route for the souls of the dead. In the song, the spirit of the dead soldier shall arrive first, while the living soldier will take the "high road" over the mountains, to arrive afterwards.
The song is from the point of view of the soldier who will be executed: When he sings, "ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road" in effect he is saying that you will return alive, and I will return in spirit. I literally just heard this song on the radio last night on the classical music station I listen to, and when my sister mentioned that Peter Hollens did a cover of it, I decided to check it out. I'm glad I did- it's a lot better than the songs I hear on the mainstream radio stations.
I've listened to this perhaps a couple hundred times, it's the song that helps put my grand daughter to sleep. Today I listened with a good headset... OMG!!! It's like hearing it for the first time. I absolutely love all that you produce, Peter. Thanks for being generous with your art.
Great job, guys! I remember my dad, (rest in peace, I love you), introducing me to this song. He explained the meaning behind the song: It has to do with two friends-Jacobite soldiers-who were in a Carlisle prison. One was sentenced to death, while the other was let go. The “high road” is considered to be the road of death, both for honor purposes and because he will be in a place of no suffering. The “low road” is the road his friend is now taking. The song is sung by the POV of the man sentenced to death, therefore, “me and my true love will never meet again” and because he is being executed, “I’ll be in Scotland before ye.” It’s a tragic, but beautiful song.
I understood it was the Low Road that was the one where the person was executed. So you've got it mostly right but the speaker says "You take the high road, and I'll take the low road." So low road = death, travel through the underworld to Scotland. High road = life. The version of the story I heard is that they were both brothers actually, while the younger one was married with family and the older one had a sweetheart but was not married. They were given the choice of who should be executed and the older one decided that it should be him. I joke that there are no happy and peaceful traditional Scottish songs. I know it isn't true, but sometimes it seems that way and this is really a good example of it.
Cano Vea Very interesting about that they were brothers and all you wrote! As for the high and low road bit, I’ve heard that argued so much over which was the road of death and the road of life; I’m not sure anyone truly knows anymore. It sure is hard to find a happy one!
I can see why it wouldn't be clear, though never meeting his true love again does suggest the bloke who took the low road (as the speaker does) is dead. But I might be missing something. Either way, its an excellent song.
So beautiful! Your voices blend together amazingly! I live in the great state of Utah not far from where David grew up and we feel like he’s ours. 😃 Love you too Peter. So talented and creative, not to mention very hard working!! Thank you and keep it up. 😉

How you 2 sang Loch Lomond and arranged the song is exactly how my great grandfather and great uncles used to sing it (but with a heavier Scottish accent lol), and it put so much nostalgia in my heart, thanks. Incredible job and congrats on the #1 on the Billboard Charts!
*I literally got tears in my eyes because of this beautiful song; the composition, the vocals, just everything about this song is so beautiful that I can’t describe it in enough words to do it justice.*
I love these two young men individually in their music and when they come together is just completely wonderful.
Thanks to Peter and David for sharing your talents in this beautiful video. My grandma loved this song and sang it a lot. She was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland during the early 50's. This song hits me differently now because she passed away this morning. RIP Grammie.
You know it’s a good duet when their voices blend together so well...can’t even tell if they were switching off on harmony and melody
So much talent! Such beautiful voices in so many ranges. I didn't know this music was out here! Thank you, Peter Hollens.
I love how it is on acapella. So serene and quiet and when you realize the back story of it hits even harder..
Beautiful hearted people, singing a beautiful song. I feel so blessed to have found your youtube. May God Bless You and your family and your friends.
This is based on the fallout of the Jacobite rebellion. Leave it to the Celts to make a beautiful song about it. Nice job guys.
That is so kind of you to say! Thank you so much
So wonderful to hear David Archuleta sing again! He is so phenomenal and Peter you are fantastic, as always!
The “you take the high road and I’ll meet you there” harmony part scratches my brain so nicely
This is probably my most favorite collab on RUclips EVER.
Beautiful as always. What a lovely song to do with David, your voices sounded so good in harmony. Loved the locations as well, amazing scenery to go with the amazing singing!
Absolutely breathless....lm Scottish for a few minutes.. it just transports your spirit🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love hearing David Archuleta still one of the greatest voices I've ever heard and paired with one of my favorite vocalist I've ever heard I call this a huge win. Loved every second of it.
AHHHHH!!!! My two favorite singers EVER!!!!! I love this!!!!

Yes yes yessssssss, I love David Archuleta; so talented!
The best harmony I've ever heard. Loch Lomond is one of my favorite songs. The atmosphere of historical Scotland and the present landscapes of Oregon US are fantastically intermingled and well-coordinated! It's just Great! Thanks Peter and David for your sublime melody.......
A David and Peter combo is one of a kind!
It was great working with David!
Peter Hollens yes I'm sure it was
I think a David, Tim, and Peter collab should happen on this song! It would be a treat to see you work with two gentlemen whose voices compliment yours perfectly. I hope you can make this collab happen. ;)
Folk music is my favorite type of music genre! So underrated! Glad that you appreciate it too!
Whats your favorite folk song? :)
I can't handle this. you are one of my favorite singers and DAVID!!! i have been such a super fan of him since day 1. This is perfect.
Thank you for watching :)
Thank you for doing what you do. I come from a choir background and when i found your channel i felt at home. Songs and singing like this have a feeling to them that popular music today just can't replicate and you capture the feelings of these songs to a T. I have a deep love for sounds like this and you just bring life to everything to do. I really appreciate your voice and art and i can't wait for the next one :)
Oh, my God, this makes me cry so..... Kids love, thank you so.
There's something magical about this song. Must be my British roots. Great redition of it too!
I literally just heard this song on the radio last night on the classical music station I listen to, and when my sister mentioned that Peter Hollens did a cover of it, I decided to check it out. I'm glad I did- it's a lot better than the songs I hear on the mainstream radio stations.
Two legends together
Thank you for watching!!
Peter Hollens yep
Loved seeing a collaboration with David Archuleta! Congrats on the Album Peter!
Thank you Nate!
cant speak, this was so wonderful thanks 🙏🙏😢😢💞💞
Very interesting! Is this one of your favorite folk songs?
I understood it was the Low Road that was the one where the person was executed. So you've got it mostly right but the speaker says "You take the high road, and I'll take the low road." So low road = death, travel through the underworld to Scotland. High road = life.
The version of the story I heard is that they were both brothers actually, while the younger one was married with family and the older one had a sweetheart but was not married. They were given the choice of who should be executed and the older one decided that it should be him.
I joke that there are no happy and peaceful traditional Scottish songs. I know it isn't true, but sometimes it seems that way and this is really a good example of it.
Peter Hollens absolutely! Thank you for singing it!
Your work with David is just perfect. I still get chills from 'Angels we hear on high'.
Thank you! :)
Yeah same here, that is how I became a Peter fans 😍
i don't even remember how i became a fan. I think it was through Lindsey Stirling and his subsequent Skyrim medley.
Only one word to describe this rendition of Loch Lomond -- WOW !!! I had pre-ordered the album and now waiting for it...
It’s coming!!!

Wow. David adds a lot to this. He is a necessary part of this song. I love it.
The transitions at 2:46 are amazing.
Thank you so much :)
Peter, 2:34- 3:18 is my favorite part with the pickup to the #keychanges until the end of the song. The album has been streamed on Spotify. ;)
Bro...that duet between you and David Archuleta sent goosebumps up and down my arms. Incredible.
Love this, have a tear in my eye, . My Daddy and Mammy sang this when we were little. Before we had radio, or tv. Beautiful memories.
You and David have the best harmonies together, of all.
