Peter, I'm a 3rd grade teacher who one day taught poetry. One of the poems was this old folk song called Shenandoah. Just out of curiosity, I googled RUclips and came across your video, which I showed the class after we read the poem. To my utter surprise, THEY LOVED IT and were completely touched by all the song's emotion! They request to hear the song all the time. It's really cute to hear inner-city kids from the Bronx sing about this great American river. Bravo and thanks!

Sheila Sanchez I absolutely love the fact that your little 3rd graders loved this song so much that they actually request to hear it frequently! That is so awesome and definitely adorable! I’m in college to be a mental health therapist and Im going to special in music therapy, so I love hearing neat stories like this, because I wouldn’t have expected third graders to enjoy this song that much! Very cool! Glad I saw your comment 🙂

Mr. Hollens, I don't expect you to see this comment but I had to write that my 8-year-old daughter is just now learning guitar and practicing Shenandoah. She's a very chill kid, but I played her your version of this song just now so that she could hear it in full and she burst into tears because she was overwhelmed by the beauty of your singing, I'm not exaggerating. It took long minutes for her to calm down again - May we all be moved so by art

I'm a native Virginian, and this song is so deep in my heart. It's power is in it's simplicity. I lived in the desert West for a few years, and I yearned so to see the Shenandoah Valley and her rivers, I had to move back to stay. Love your version, thank you.

My grandpa loved this song. Its why I love it. I lost him, the man who raised me, in 1982. I was 14. We would sit by the Allegheny, and it was our Shenandoah. Now I'm a grandpa. Gramps I miss you still. I am grateful that you taught me to be a gramps just by watching the way you lived.

My pap used to love this song, and he used to take me carp fishing in the Allegheny. He couldn't sing, but his life's philosophy was that if you can't do something that just means you have to be extra enthusiastic. I have fond memories of him making a mess of this and several other songs as we hauled back buckets of carp and bluegill and maybe the lucky smallmouth. Thanks for helping me remember something great today.

Shenandoah is my native valley. The daughter in the second verse can refer to the Native American legend of how the river and the valley came to be...Shenandoah was "the daughter of the stars." (The song was also sung by soldiers leaving the area during the Civil War, and can refer to their wives and sweethearts left behind.)
Peter's rendition is one of the finest ever!

Oh this song, i remember it at school - we had so much fun with the song. For some reason, 400 of us just sung as loud as we could for the ONE word every time, so:
"oh shenandoah, I long to hear you, *AAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY* you rolling riveeeeeeerrr!"
Word is we broke multiple microphone/speaker sets, and a few people in the audience had temporary deafness.

The Shenandoah River is no where near Missouri. It's starts in W. Virginia and flows through here in Shenandoah County, eventually feeding into the Potomac.

@@kathyoneill4011 Sure. It's deep-rooted Americana we all feel. It paints a picture of emotion--fear, change, growth, deep longing, reminiscence--engendered by nature and the qualities of loneliness within that virginal nature. I've never really tried to describe it before, but it makes me halt each time I hear it, trying to imagine & comprehend the vast untamed wilderness America was in the early part of the 19th Century.

Jesus, I remember singing this in choir. But the opening was split into a duet, and I was scared SHITLESS at the thought of singing with only one other person in front of at least 300 people. Mind you, I was frigging TEN! Seeing someone else do this song, and doing it so well, is just the best form of nostalgia I can ever get because that night was actually really fun regardless of the terror of being in front of those people.

His voice is deffinatly a beautiful gift that he has chosen to share with us, and I think It's his wife with him on a few songs, she is equally talented with the voice of an angle and they both compliment each other's extraordinary voice. I've worn my tablet out on U-tube by playing Shenandoah so much. In this day of chaos and misery, it is so special to just set the worries and problems aside for awhile and let the songs relax and take you away from all troubles, if only for a little while. Please, Mr. Peter Holmes, keep your singing songs. It proves there is still beauty, and serenity still left in the world!! Would "I'll take you home again ,Cathleen" an Irish folk song, I believe, that would be a small "vacation" for is ALL!!!!
