Here we have a brilliantly schooled english professional choir siging one if the most fundamerntally American folk songs and the effect is ravishing. This 70 year old, fully American man, with hands big enough to calm and guide a horse, has been left in tears. thank you all, musicians, technicians. This is an extraordinary gift, a blessing in a world going mad.
Lyrics Shenandoah (James Erb arrangement) Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you And hear your rolling river Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you way, we're bound away Across the wide Missouri. I long to see your smiling valley And hear your rolling river I long to see your smiling valley way, we're bound away Across the wide Missouri. 'Tis seven long years since last I've seen you And hear your rolling river 'Tis seven long years since last I've seen you way, we're bound away Across the wide Missouri. Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you And hear your rolling river Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you way, we're bound away Across the wide Missouri.
This is the kind of world we live in today. People don't appreciate good things. You guys are amazing and inspiring. Thank you for blessing our ears with beautiful sound.
To be sure...you are a fortunate soul to have had that opportunity. There are many fine arrangements over the years from simple eloquence with a duet culling from the Americana heritage to this zenith of the British choral tradition. The Erb arrangement, to my ears and heart, has been the most touching and compelling of all.
God has reached down and given us this incredibly glorious recording. God has blessed the conductor and voices so that they might assure all of us of a benevolent Creator. The movement of the Shenandoah River is evoked and evoked in the overlapping voices, and all is right with the world as we listen for just a little while. Warmth and gratitude for the genius of all who combined to offer this gift of music.
Ken B Love the Choir of Kings College. But there’s something about English boys singing this deeply American song that bothers me. Guess I’m just a homer for my guys from the Bay Area. 🤓
Ah, the human voice. Still the most beautiful and versatile musical instrument. I still remember Mrs Flewker teaching this to a raggle-taggle bunch of primary school boys in the 1950's (I was one of them). Admittedly nowhere near the level of perfection of these boys, but just as enjoyable.
This song never fails to make me cry. It is universally appealing for its beauty. As an American with roots deep in Virginia and the American south with ancestors who fought the Revolutionary War and both sides of the Civil War, this song holds special meaning for me. They went through so much suffering and pain and loneliness away from their loved ones. This song speaks to that.
This song is one of my ever favourite. Every time I hear it I become very nostalgic. This rendition of Sir Stephen Cleobury is the best I heard. May he rest in peace. We all missed your dedications.
American identity has been held captive by our MSM and social network overlords, thus rendering this national treasure, an ancient relic of white supremacy, unfitting into the progressive idea of a global order utopia.
@@danielfennessy That is a stupid statement. American identity like this belongs to all Americans regardless of their races, skin color, sexual orientations, etc. This also applies to current Americans and future Americans who are currently applying for citizenship. America was settled first by native Americans then came white Americans and black Americans. Their heritage belong to all that are citizens of that country.
@@adiginting2551 I'd agree with you if you knew God designed you, and that Jesus died to save your soul. Clearly, I cannot. Thus, enjoy roasting your nuts in he'll. Lol

In my opinion one of the greatest folk songs and an absolutely incredible performance. Gives me chills! So beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing.
Such a beautiful rendition! This is my favourite version, with the stunning echo of waves. We sang this SATB once with our choir some 14 or 15 years ago and I can still sing along as if it were yesterday!
Maybe there are technically better versions of this some, but they are no match for this choir. It is most beautiful version I came across, with those angelic voices and graduating canon it gives you a feeling of something pure and majestic.
In 1971 James Erb arranged what many people consider the definitive version of Shenandoah for his University of Richmond (Virginia) Choir which toured Europe. I was in that choir as a freshman. Here is our recording. ruclips.net/video/vSHLfujGFqk/видео.html
We sang this in choir when I was in high school, and it is an absolutely beautiful piece. The way all the parts blend together while also doing their own thing is just absolutely gorgeous. Man, some of those older guys were really able to get up there haha. For us, it was the whole choir, so guys and girls, but it was still beautiful. Definitely the best song we ever sang.

Shenandoah has been a favourite of mine for many a year - and not without good reason. Somehow it becomes more significant as time goes on - and as changes make their mark upon the horizon. An important song indeed - some secrets are forever.
Every aspect of this performance comes together to create perfection: the talent of the young singers, the acoustics of the legendary church, and the masterful arrangement. Truly a divinely-inspired rendition, and I thank King's College for the experience of hearing it.
My absolute favourite song ……I had a friend who rode very high level dressage and she rode a musical test to this music on her coloured horse , it suited him perfectly…..and I burst into tears watching it

The first time I heard this song was by a bluegrass family group called The Petersens. (Really good, you should check them out.) And I didn't realize this song wasn't a bluegrass song by origin. I LOVE this version. Makes me wish I could continue choir in college since I only got two short years of choir in highschool and don't have enough experience to continue at a higher level.

Living in the Northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, this song has special meaning for those who live here. This is a great version of it.
How glorious I picture your valley to be
These boys seem to really want to see it. Can someone please book them a trip?
I live down in the Blue Ridge, and hearing this song performed so beautifully gives me chills.
Grew up in the valley and this was my favsong to perform in choir

Best recording anyway. I like the St Olafs version myself.
Outstanding
One of my favorite..done by the great Paul Robeson..PEACE

This is sublime musicianship. Glorious arrangement, majestically performed.
Such a rich blend of voices! I had forgotten how much purity and body the boys choir brings!
Crystal clear with just enough reverb to give a fuller sound. About the oldest of American folk songs.
Those countertenor choral scholars have stolen my heart
Gentlemen - that was outstanding.
Gentleman, what a nice way to call them. They certainly deserve it. ❤
The human voice can be so wonderful
Agreed.
When they start echoing each other, I could almost cry at the beauty of it
Not as good as the Chanticleer rendition.
Agreed. I did actually cry as it reminded me of when my dad used to sing like that at St Paul’s
Imitation! There are many differences between this version and the Chanticleer version, notwithstanding: men vs boys & men, for starters.
@@deanharless7230 This version is far and away superior to the Chanticleer rendition - in fullness, overlay, range, far better ethereal quality.
