We finally take a crack at this bonnie Celtic classic, just in time for St. Patrick's Day 🍀We know it's Scottish in origin, but we feel like it still captures that essence we're all after these days regardless of borders 💚 How will you be spending your St. Paddy's '21?
I am going to wear a green shirt and have school. I think we might have corned beef and cabbage on Sunday, and maybe I will make Irish soda bread if I have time.
Happy St.Patrick’s day! 🍀🌈💚 so beautiful magical I feel like I am in and world in more happier better place xoxo 😘
This was beautiful! If ever you want a Piper for these Scottish tunes let me know🙌🏻💕🍀
He’s convincing is he Irish or something?
As a Scot, this gives me the twitch since Americans often confuse Scottish and Irish folk. 😱
But as it was a beautiful arrangement, it's fine. 😜
yes. Yes. YEEESSSSSSSSSS ALL THE YESSSSS I NEED A FULL FOLK SONG ALBUM NOOOOWWW YOU 2!!!!!
Whoa what an idea that would be!!! 😉☘️
I so agree!!!
@@TheHoundTheFox I would buy it.
I second this, it would definitely be breathtaking :D
It would easily become one of my favorite albums 😍
This is actually quite a sad song, but all the more beautiful for it. The perspective is that of a Scottish soldier, captured with his brother at the Battle of Culloden, a disastrous defeat for the Scots. Their English captors gave them the choice of which would be executed and which would be allowed to return home. Thus, the "you take the high road and I'll take the low road, an' I'll be in Scotland afore ye" is from the perspective of the one who chose to die instead of his brother, as he states that his heart and soul will be there immediately when he is killed, to dwell there in peace forevermore. At the end of the chorus, he laments that "me and my true love will never meet again on the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond," meaning that although his soul goes to the lands of his youth, he will never again see the woman he loved.
Note: Thank you Tanner Hurst for pointing out a couple details I missed.
The song has been altered so many times between its creation and its first recording, so the "true meaning" is still very speculative. :) The soldier story is a pretty common theory though! Maybe one day we'll uncover some more evidence as to how the original song came to be and if/how it got altered by time & by oral sharing/misremembering. :)
That is absolutely beautiful 🥺❤ Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for explaining that. I actually think that touches my soul in a deeper way.
The way I was told the story it was two captured brothers, not two random soldiers, and they were given the choice of who would live and who would die. Rather than draw straws or something, one brother volunteered to die for his brother.
Probably inaccurate to say 'British' - rather say 'English'.
You two are possibly the BEST male/female duet I’ve ever encountered - your voices together and your genuine chemistry are absolutely beautiful. This video has me wishing for a historical fiction musical starring you. 😉🎶

Crikey, that'd be awesome.
best version is still live with Runrig
Dude, I am ADDICTED to this song
Scottish love ballads have me like 😭😭😭😭😭
Right??? Why do they have to rip at the heart strings like that??? ❤️🍀
Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows,
Fair is the lily of the valley,
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne,
But my love is fairer than any!
Im glad im not the only one who thinks of these two songs together... Now i want to listen to Red is the rose
@@brewheeler8792 red is the rose was written a 100 years later to the tune of loch lomond.
The outro with the sounds of water running and bird chirping was such a vibe; I felt like I was dreaming even after the song was done
Haha felt like like the perfect opportunity for some added tranquility! Thank you Hamilton ❤️🍀
This is one of my dad's favorite songs and today is his feast day (his name's Patrick too) Happy St Patrick's Day 🥰
Yay Patrick! Cheers him for us ❤️🍀
My dad's name day too! Happy St Patrick's day!
This is my favorite version of this song. Her texture and tone is so beautiful, and his voice complements hers so well. They're such a great duo to listen to.
Please try the Skye Boat Song for your next Scottish project!
LOVE that tune and have had it on our to-do list for quite some time.... 😊❤️🍀
I don't think I can ever hear enough versions of that! My favorite is George Donaldson, of Celtic Thunder (I saw it on a TV special, but can't find it anywhere on RUclips OR their CDs?!?!, or I'd link it here 😥)
@@Amcsae Me neither, that song doesn't get enough love :( My favorite cover is by Lauren Paley, she has a beautiful voice. You should check her out some time! ruclips.net/video/dQD6_z3lU9Q/видео.html In case you wanna listen to her version :)
Loch Lomond has always been one of my favorite pieces, and you guys did an amazing job singing it.
So glad we did it justice! ❤️🍀
what is it "Loch Lomond"?
🎉 greetings from coastal Mississippi. Beloved song. This reminds me of when l went to Dublin in 2023. Wonderful performance ❤
This is stunning, but I do get a chuckle out of singing a song that is so absolutely and completely SCOTTISH for day that is celebrates IRELAND when there are so, so many Irish songs you could have chosen from.
I had no idea that the saying, "You take the high road, and I'll take the low road..." was from a song. 🤯
How fun, right?! Thanks for watching Kelli ❤️🍀
Or does the song use a saying?
I believe the low road refers to death, the folk belief being that a Scot who dies abroad will quickly return home in spirit form via the underworld, while his companion in the song will take the high road of the living
@@wimfranken826 Given it was written in 1876 by Andrew Lang, it's safe to assume it's original to him.
Fun to watch people rediscover really old gold classics. ;)
Very nice! Thanks!
Thank you! ❤️🍀
I’m only half Scottish and Irish, but songs like these always resonate with me. Awesome job! Thanks for doing this song and have a very happy St. Paddy’s Day!!
Thank you so much! Happy St. Paddy's Day to you! ☘️
When I’m older I plan to get married on Loch Lomond and have this song
Playing. I sung this in chorus and played it in band. This song has so much to me, hopefully my dream shall come true❤
I’ve always loved this song - every artist makes it a completely different listening experience. This one is fantastic!
It's a really fun one to put your own spin on! 😊 Thanks Lauren! ❤️🍀
omg so good song learned me a lot about Scotland
How beautiful. Being Scottish myself I have heard many versions of this song good and bad and this one for me is up there with the best. Please do more Scottish folk music it suits your voices so well. Amazing thank you xxx
One of the single best moments of my entire life was seeing my high school’s mixed choir perform this piece. They hit every note so perfectly that it brought tears to my eyes(my school is pretty prestigious when it comes to choir, so it was just… yes). You captured that emotion with it that I didn’t think only two people could.
A fresh and gorgeous rendering. ❤
It is obvious that you are each other's true loves 🥰. Beautifully sung as you always do. Love the tranquility your voices bring about. This was such a treat as I had such a turmoil filled day at work. Thank you. ♥️
Aw that makes us so happy to hear you say Yvonne ❤️ Thank you as always, and so sorry you had a hard day! ❤️🍀
@@TheHoundTheFox feeling much better after listening to you. Can look at it more objectively. Thanks to you ♥️
Every time, when i hear this song - my tears are falling from my eyes... It's a song for a soul regeneration!
When I went to Scotland in 2019, I heard this song for the first time and fell IN LOVE with the beautiful highlands. You guys brought me back to that lovely place with this beautiful rendition.
I listened this song for the first time three years ago, during a trip in the scottish highlands. I really miss that period, and Scotland as well. Your cover (I love your voices and I follow you from some months) took me back there, to those landscapes and the happiness I felt there, and gave me a bit of that happiness again.
This was an amazing cover, thank you 🍀💚
Hi guys thanks for the beautiful song today I really enjoyed it what beautiful voices for this song love the location happy st Patrick's day
Thank you Steven! Happy St. Paddy's to you too 🍀
This is lovely, thank you very much, I fished Loch Lamond back in August 2015 with my daughter, caught some fine trout and fat perch too, you do indeed bring the song to life, and the memories
Slowing this down to .75 is a vibe. I love love this song. Thanks for a wonderful cover!!
A beautiful song.
Thanks Bill!
That was beautiful! I love the background, and your singing is amazing. Happy St. Patrick's day!
Thank you so much Amelia! Happy St. Paddy's to you too!
This is awesome! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
As a scotish person it important to tell you this is a scotish song there is a difference and its offensive to Scottish people that you call it irish
I heard this song for the first time on a camp out and instantly fell in love... and now I get to listen to it from y’all!! Thanks so much and great job!
Thank you Timothy! Glad we did it justice ❤️🍀
Chills 💙🤍💙🤍
🤩❤️🍀
Yes! Finally can hear his voice without being drowned out by hers. Why can’t he be the louder of the two? Love them though.
Okay I have a very niche memory of this song. A camp in the mountains, where we stayed for 3 weeks, and went on hikes every week, and we did crafts and games and went swimming in a river, and there were cows and goats and two cats, and every night, the counselors would sing us to sleep, and the best feeling I’ve ever felt is waking up on a misty mountaintop at this camp, and this song is one of the songs that stuck with me from that camp, and I know that I’ll never experience anything quite like this camp ever again. I haven’t heard this song since then, and so this is quite a special song to me
Beautiful
😊❤️🍀
So beautiful!! Love your folk songs! And the location is breathtaking
Thank you os much Evangeline! Our very own little Loch to serenade 😊❤️🍀

Breathtaking in its simplicity 😍 I'm such a sucker for Scottish ballads and Celtic music... please continue to explore this genre! Of course, we'll love whatever you two choose to produce ^0^ Keep it up, Reilly and McKenzie!
What a masterpiece!!! Glad to have the chance to discover new songs via your majestic performances (especially in love with your covers of the Celtic ones)!! And how your voices complement each other's! Lots of love by a new fun from Athens, Greece!🇬🇷💙
Thank you so so much! And Happy St. Patrick's Day! ☘️
what a beautiful song for today. I love the lake that you used for the song. ☘
Thanks Greg! Just a nice little Loch of our own to sing by 😊❤️🍀
A great duet rendition of this very touching song combining a male and female voices. An avid music lover from the Philippines.
Your voices blend so perfectly together ! Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with the world ! ❤️
Beautiful just beautiful !
Thank you Ron! ❤️🍀
I really loved this version!! I liked how it showcased how beautifully your voices blend and harmonize together. The melody reminds me a bit of y’all’s arrangement of For the Dancing and the Dreaming which is still one of absolute favorite arrangements y’all have done. Thank you for bringing such beauty to my day! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!! 🍀
so beautiful, thank you
Reminds me of a trip to Scotland I went on a long time ago.
So many amazing memories came rushing back. Thank you.
We can't wait to be able to visit Scotland and the rest of the UK area ❤️🍀
I learned this as a child…my mother was of Scottish American descent. My great grandmother still mourned the fate of Bonny Prince Charlie..several hundred years later. Btw,he was a scoundrel., lol, though the real and tragic history was the horror Scottish oppression by the English.
I love this song
Thank you so much! ❤️🍀
My husband and I visited Scotland a few years ago, and squeezed in a few minutes on the banks of Loch Lomond at dusk while driving between BnBs. The spot we stood and sang this song looks remarkably like the spot you chose for this video! (Also, I heartily second the Skye Boat Song suggestion).
Why does this remind me of the movie Brave at the end ❣
Thanks!
Beautifully done.(As always) 👴
Thank you so much George! ❤️🍀
This duet is just a sample of the true magic music can inspire in us...Bonnie well done!!
Glad I finally found the song that Jaques the scottish terrier sings in lady and the tramp

You reach the heart ❤️
Thank you Robert! ❤️🍀
Just incredible! The only thing that could make this better is some wicked, passionate cello.
Every time I play this song my 4 month old pauses what he’s doing to listen and begins cooing along towards the end. Something about your voices immediately soothes him!
Wish I could like this again! Coming back after a bit, still so beautiful. Thank you!
I cried ♥
Love it! Love the folk vibe, location, the harmony, your dress! 🎶
I love randomly coming across amazing talent like this. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful rendition.
I miss spending days be loch Lomond with my ex used to just go there if we were bored and watch the water or look at the hills and mountains miss those days sometimes
