- Most guitar players... and it seems especially blues players...
Have this goal of "mastering the fretboard," which sounds really cool, until you try to work out how that's going to be done...
For example, MANY of my students come to me saying they've been practicing all 5 boxes of the pentatonic scale or blues scale... but they still can't really solo.
That's because, plain and simple, you need to focus on small areas of the fretboard at once.
And that is ESPECIALLY true when you start trying to change sounds from major blues to minor blues or anything else you want to throw in (like the house pattern, or borrowing notes from another scale... etc.)
So in this video, I'll show you one of my favorite spots to start fishing for fun sounds :)

that's as clear as day .. I only know box 1 (minor) 3 frets down (major).. you gave me the objective to know them all .. 1 at a time ... great lesson
great lesson man, this is just the chord progression i needed after learning 12 bar dom 7 blues recently.. a nice variation, letting me focus on maj/min soloing over the changes in a new way. thanks a lot!
I've been fighting a bit this winter with mixing Min and Maj pentatonics; thanks! Well explained.......great video.
Pure Peter Green, Need Your Love So Bad. Great feel.
I was hearing the same thing.
Funny. I was hearing Freddie King, "Ain't Nobody's Business." I think we're both right. Both are 8 bar blues.
Nice lesson. Thanks Grif. Johnny Wade from the old studio café days in Newport. Late 90's.
Great lesson thank you...... Bit of a lightbulb moment for me rite there!
Awesome lesson love the BB king licks cheers mate
I learned all the positions first, diatonic and pentatonic. It certainly made learning...different.
very classy lesson, thank you!
Nice one, ta fella.
nice 3rd position always sounds bluesy
Hey Griff. At about 5:33 you mention a course called “Soloing level I minor pentatonic”. I think I need to go there but cannot find it in your courses. Do I have the name correct?

just talks about, your level, knowing where you are at, keeping it simple just in Minor Pen, or blending, etc etc
Hope that helps.
"I need someone's hand, to lead me through the night...."
