- Thanks for watching, the Driveshaft holds 150CC of gear oil, don't forget to top it off after reassembly.

I happen to own that Bike in the video and was able to get out on a ride for the first time since purchasing it 3 weeks ago. Man does it ride sweet. The carb work that was also done has it running tip top. Tic over is consistent and strong and fueling is great through mid range and high revs. Nice work on this video you make it look easy and explain the job well.
Glad everything works well! Also thanks for joining my channel.
Regarding the swing arm, you should be holding the preload pin in place as you tighten the outer nut. Cut a "window" into the side of the socket so you can fit the Allen wrench inside it while tightening.
the inner stud wont spin, no need to hold it.
.@TheBMWGuy You did a lot of unnecessary work to replace the boot. Final drive does not need to be removed. Simply move the swing arm back a bit, remove the driveshaft bolts, replace boot and put back together.
Oben means up; Unten is down. So you are right. Greetings from Germany, Berlin. Berlin the home of BMW Motorrad. 😊
Great video - I followed this to remove & replace my drive boot ('89 R100RT). I'll comment that the metal-to-metal surface between the rear drive bevel (i.e., the rear drive differential) and the drive shaft (where the 4 bolts connect the two parts) leaked upon reassembly - just a drop or two every day or so. So, I again took those apart and cleaned them very well and upon reassembly, I applied a thin layer of Loctite 518 Gasket Maker. I also researched the torque specs for those four bolts and upped them to 40 ft lbs from the 25 ft lbs you recommended (at the 11:00 minute mark in the video). I see in the Haynes Manual (0249) for the BMW R100RT 1987 and up, list a torque spec recommendation of 39-48 ft. lbs so maybe you have a misprint on your recommendation of 25 ft. lbs. in the video? Snowbum’s writings also seem to recommend 40 ft. lbs. So far, after several days, it remains dry. Looking at the microfiche, it seems odd that BMW didn't put a thin paper gasket between those mating surfaces. If it leaks again, that would be my next move. Have you run into this in the past? Thanks again for the great videos!
you don't have to remove the final drive from the swing arm . i even leave the wheel on and still able to remove the whole assembly without problem .
First of all, thank you for this video, it helped me with my recent driveshaft boot change on my R100.
However, trying to get that rubber boot back on both sides at the end is an absolute nightmare. Finally got it after a few beers while screaming the song "John Deere Green" with some help from my girlfriend. 🤣🤣🤣
Good time to check the universal joint for notches as well...
I thought it was the transmission oil that leaked through the output shaft oil seal
Yeah, where was the oil leaking from? It shouldn't have any oil in the drive shaft area, so it's either a faulty gearbox output seal, or a faulty final drive oil seal. In either case, it's not a simple clean up job to fix...
these old airheads have driveshaft oil.
@@Mtthwpez I'm wondering how to tell whether it's just the driveshaft oil or a failed gearbox output seal. I changed that seal once on a 1982 Suzuki GS1100L, along with the bearings. Not fun, but It was easy to diagnose because there's no driveshaft oil in that bike. Maybe just watch the gearbox oil level?
are you suggesting its the boot which is causing the leak? seems to me its the gear box seal leaking the one that the boot is supposed to be protecting.or am I mistook? Apologies if I am
HI, I have two questions, how to restore and calibrate the carburetors on a 87 bmw r65.
And how to replace and install the cylinders and pistons of the same bike. Thank you
i did a video on the 32mm carb rebuild procedure as well as top end reseal on a r75, both those videos should help you out! if you need more help please e-mail me
What year is this bmw you worked on? Dont you need a Swing Arm Gasket for your model or the vedio didn’t capture it?
1972, no gasket. just RTV
Do you not have to grease splines or add any final drive oil on these?
there is oil in the driveshaft, i will be doing a separate video on this
A BMW leaking oil !?!? No way !!!
crazy!!
There are easier ways to do this job. Pulling the tire and final drive aren't part of them.
This looks like a thoroughly miserable job to do. Not requiring a lot of skill, but fiddly as hell.
