    Here's the thing, guys. Liliac is indie. They aren't necessarily looking to get signed. They aren't looking necessarily to get famous. Popular, yes. Famous is something else. As an indie band with no promotion and no airplay, Covers are advertising. I'm not all that different from other fangs when it comes down to it. I found Liliac while trolling youtube for cover acts to listen to. Find a familiar song while doing artwork, allows me to hear something new while at the same time hearing something old that won't distract me. Occasionally you find something intriguing. My brother loved Ozzy growing up.. found this group of young kids covering crazy train and it had an insane number of views.. ok, let's give it a listen. I didn't get much artwork done that day. Thankfully I was on vacation but I have to say I spent the next 4 days of vacation so intrigued going "how have I never heard of these folks?". I caught up on something like 7 years of their covers and originals and then went straight to their website and plonked down the money for their entire discography including duplicates on vinyl. I have everything they've released. Easiest music decision I've made in 30 years. And if not for covers, I wouldn't know who they are still more than likely. That is the power of the covers.
    Now let's go one further. Their covers have introduced me to music I never would have listened to prior. I'm not a metal guy. I have ecclectic tastes so I'm not auto-putoff by anything save for (C) rap. Aside from a very few independents and "The rapping duke" which I find hilarious, I can't stand rap. I have a couple of CD albums packed with CDs from the Beatles to Falco, Nena to the Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, AC/DC and Amy Grant. Billy Joel's complete works.. etc.. The selection is all over the place. But I don't listen that much anymore. I pay zero attention to radio as a rule, watch very little in the way of shows and prefer watching 'how to' type vids on RUclips more than anything.. I love learning new things. And I'd rather have a talent stack to work from than another episode of something I wish I could get the time back from having watched. Few series really impress me anymore so it has to be top pocket find level of good before I'll pay it any attention. Shogun, for example. All that said, Never heard of the White stripes. Liliac did 7 Nation army and blew me into the next room. Love love loved it. And I found a new band I didn't know in the process. Downside, though I respect the talent of the white stripes, their original now sounds like a studio demo tape after listening to the Lilac version. Period. I'd never listened to Ronnie James Dio before hearing liliac cover his stuff. I don't know if I'm a fan of Dio; but, having heard his stuff, I'm a fan of Liliac's ability to interpret it. And I'm a fan of Vinny Appice.
    So, all this stuff about covers, imo, is much ado about nothing. Because these aren't people trying to sign with a traditional label to turn over their souls and most of the earning from their work to a label in exchange for promotion and being artificially fawned over. They're real people and they are real with their fans. They want to entertain for a living and they're doing the backbreaking work of getting there without crying about it. They're an American underdog story imo and they're doing it right - busting their backsides to get there and they have a fan base that is growing on what they're doing. We like the covers and we love the originals. And we got to see it in process as the phenomenon has taken shape. It's a fun, interesting and fulfilling ride watching this group rise.

    At the risk of sounding like one of the grandpa fangs you catoragise (I'm actually old enough to be their great grandpa) us dedicated Fangs as , I have to say that although I agree that I love their original songs the best I can understand that the demand for them to perform tribute covers is such that they are more or less expected to add them to their playlist , when you consider that they actually perform some of these covers better than the originals only adds to this dilemma . Regardless of our opinions, and everyone has one , as it should be ,Liliac are playing to sold out concerts which are getting bigger as expected, and they are doing what they want successfully and without the interference of corporate influences, ,I for one say good luck to them , how many of us can say that we're doing what we love and are enjoying the journey . FANG4LIFE RORH .

    Great annalysis guys. I'm a big fan of Liliac, and really agree with what you're saying. I wish they would pick a style and run with it. I don't know if you seen their cover of Heaven and Hell, but they went back to their dark, or goth style and racked up 1 million views in 2 months. They did a more complex song from a legendary band.that was longer than 3 minutes. They can do whatever they think is best for their career, but if I had my way, go semi goth and write some four and half minute songs. Critisism from someone who cares should't be viewd hateful. How about calling it helpful. Keep up the good work.

    They do some covers during their concerts because the fans (fangs) request them. Sorry you are incorrect, that is Melody’s real voice, check out the video of Mars (live in Cumming, GA) or Not Afraid extended version which is also live. Those are both originals by the way. They are touring across the country this year, they’ll be in the Pacific Northwest for the first time this year, they’re also doing a special concert this fall with Vinnie Appice a tribute to Dio. Also check out other originals like We Are the Children, Dear Father, Mystery, and Sail Away. This song was recorded in 2020 during the pandemic, in the apartment they were living in at the time in the LA area. Melody and Sam had longer hair earlier on, they had it cut short to donate it to an organization that makes wigs for children who lost their hair due to chemotherapy and other treatments. Final remember, they write their own music and were teenagers when this was written.

    I think one reason some of the fans like the covers, is they do them so well or they set the bar so high when it comes to covers. But I don't think it's really hurt them, I think maybe it's helped them to get alot of the older rockers, I'm 59 and a huge fan. But I like both, covers and there songs also. I did hear there dropping Dream On, on March 22, so there you go

    I thought this was a good and interesting discussion. By the way, the family surname is Cristea. Their parents were both born in Romania, and the word "liliac" is the Romanian word for "bat", which is where the vampiric marketing theme comes from. I'm a little confused what Kirk means by saying "we know that's not her natural voice". I don't know why you're saying that, since as far as I know that absolutely is her natural voice. Since Liliac, The Warning and Motion Device all came out around the same time, and they are all Millennials and self and fan-funded family bands, I think some comparisons are interesting to note. Any of these kinds of comparisons will usually induce outrage among the very protective Liliac fans, but they are hard to avoid. Each of these bands has certain strengths. Motion Device/Quarter After Three has the most talented songwriting of the bands, because it has the best organic pure musician and song writer with Andrea Menoudakis, who is a generational talent as a pure creative and obviously brilliant musician. They also benefit from a very creative and talented drummer and a very interesting singer, who is an excellent natural blues singer. Their reluctance to do live shows has held them back commercially, unfortunately, but they are the most intriguing band to listen to. They are never formulaic and never copy style. The Warning is the best live performance band, with loads of natural charisma. Their songwriting is solid, and comes from the good songwriting team of Paulina and Daniela Villareal. Their talent for live performance and charisma has made them by far the most commercially successful. It is impossible not to like them and root for them. Liliac has a one of a kind vocalist, which is their big asset, and they are technically competent. They have the weakest original songwriting, which I think is what has always held them back. Whereas The Warning has a good songwriting team of Paulina and Daniela, and Motion Device/Quarter After Three has a brilliant and highly creative songwriter musician with Andrea, many Liliac songs are very competently performed (and in the case of Melody's singing, even brilliantly performed), but seem to be almost written by committee, and often feel soulless. This feeling is often exemplified by Sam's solos, which although skillful, often feel very unmusical and soullessly inorganic, and like a technical exercise. The song Carousel is the exception that proves this rule, I think, which was an excellent original song, and was not formulaic. To sum it up, I think a good analogy is to imagine each band coming out with a new album this month. One's thoughts would be about Qa3, "I can't wait to hear what Andrea's come up with and how she'll do it"; about The Warning, "I can't wait to see them play this live"; and about Liliac, "I think it would be cool to hear a song I like sung by Melody."

    This video is already 4 years old, I believe. It was their first Single off of the Queen of Hearts album from 2020. And yeah, it was during their Vamp Metal phase. I'm honestly not sure what they're going for lately. This new "Rise Up" video that they released today, they're dressed in kind of a steam punk post apocalyptic kinda garb.
    But anyway, yeah, if there's one criticism I have with their original songs is that they're too short. Most are under the 4 minute mark. And as we Metalheads know, you really gotta get your songs up to that 4 to 6 minute mark to really show your stuff. I even prefer longer songs between 7 and 12 minutes myself.
    I'm currently collecting the Sonata Arctica catalog and they have both shorter sub 4 minute songs, but longer ones in that 7 to 11 minute range, and it's not even noticeable when composed right.
    Oh, I should also add that Liliac's song writing is pretty good, they just short-change us on the guitar solos most of the time. But if you notice Sam's solos are often very mimicking the overall melody of the song, and I quite like that. I wished more bands would do that instead of just playing sweeps and octave runs and whatnot. This song here, "Nothing" didn't have a breakdown as such, but most of their other songs do, and they're quite well written. Listen to "We Are the Children" for a pretty cool breakdown. Gets pretty heavy.

Cover or not all bands have done covers not to mention they're still very young and constantly growing these kids are more musically talented than most bands I have ever worked with. Watch for their new stuff mind blowing Most opinions are self projections music is art and theatre they don't over do anything they bring you into the song, that would be like telling Alice Cooper to stop his theatrics that has gone on now for decades obviously he's doing something very right 😆🤦 like I said self projections "what you see in me is a reflection of you" 😉 Rock on 😊🤘

      Liliac is not an organic band. They are the sole creation of Papa Liliac. Read his bio, which says, in part: Founder/CEO/Producer/Sound Engineer, etc. That tells you all you need to know about the band’s origins. He runs the show. No harm in that.

      You said that perfectly. Have to laugh off the criticism of them being too animated or melodramatic. I think back to Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Elton John, and many more. Were they too melodramatic also? Seemed to work out fine for them. So many reactors who present themselves as avant-garde and then whine and moan about how Liliac doesn't fit into their preconceived notions of how they should be. Ironic.

    I don't know where you're getting that you know that's not her real voice...that she's copying the greats. You couldn't be more wrong. If you review her voice going back to the Santa Monica Pier you'll see that her voice has only changed slightly from maturing. When she grew from a teenager into a young woman. Melody has a deeper voice tone when she speaks and when they were doing music like "Stay" as the Cristea's she had a break in her voice around the age of 10. Of course, her singing isn't like her speaking voice but she has never tried to sing like anyone but herself, not to mention that the grit in her voice works for rock!

    • @adkrockandmetal
      @adkrockandmetal  6 месяцев назад +2

      When we say it's not her real voice what we should say it's not her natural tone, their is an element of tone that she puts on in her voice. Alot of singers do it, they sing in particular way but it is on a style rather than just their natural voice, much like the way a singing impersonator does. In Rise up her voice has less off that tonal inflection and is more balanced

    • @emilycassi1495
      @emilycassi1495 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@adkrockandmetal I understand what you're talking about now. Excuse my ignorance. There are some notable changes in Melody's voice in certain ways. For example, when they shot "The Trooper" or most any of the earlier songs pre- 2 or 3 years ago, her vibrato has changed. She now has a much wider vibrato than she used too. I don't know if that's a purposeful change or a natural one. She displays her wide vibrato in the cover of "Heaven and Hell". I think she has the ability for clean singing without much distortion because she has displayed that as well, but as long as they continue covering old school rock I believe the rasp and grit will stick around. Now she had a clean sound in "Close My Eyes Forever". Don't know if you've reacted to that one yet but they featured another singer to represent Ozzy's part of the song and he did quite well. His name is Mercury Cross and sings for a band called Wiccan.

      Incorrect. You have to kick off the training wheels. They need to collaborate with proven prolific song writers. Once Melody was off bass there was on over focus on vocals. It's like spice in a recipe. More is just more. It doesn't mean better. Often times it's too overt use it sparingly..appropriately. I do love the band. So much in fact I would like the best for them. That means being able to critique without being overt. They need to find a proven song writer to collaborate with. It's a learning process that's only mastered by doing. Like anything else. Dont pigeon hole them by false claims that the internet changed the need to be more proficient at writing and performing originals. That statement is steeped in denial. Where growth stops, stagnation begins. And I want better for them than that. They have it..they just have to focus it. Peace out.

    I am a big fan of theirs, but agree with you that they need to find an identity if they want to increase their level of success.... but... do they want it? I know they just joined TKO to assist in landing gigs.. I've seen them live twice. The first time, they were great, but the sound was awful. The next time was a small dive joint, and their performance and the sound was awesome. They need consistency, for sure. I always felt they need to tour with a major band - not only to expand their audience, but also to ensure quality sound systems. If I didn't know their talent level, I would never have given the band another look after that first show.
    BTW - Their catalog of originals is quite good - my favorite period is from their "Queen of Hearts" album. They seemed to have a consistent identity, and the songwriting was solid. They put out a live video recording of most of that album that is insanely good... the title track and Vertigo are my favorites. Try their videos of "Dear Father" and "Mystery". I enjoy their new album "Madness" but it is all over the place. Some of it is brilliant - but most of it is not "radio friendly" hard rock. I will continue to follow them - there is something about them that make you cheer them on. Maybe because they are still small enough that you can feel you are a part of it! Fang for life!
