What a batsman and personality. A Surrey and England cricketing icon. Gone so soon. Rest easy Thorpey.

My favourite English batsman of the last 30 years. Brilliant record, batting average, stroke play.
I'll go as far as to say I think he's the most constant English batsman of the last 50 years.
    Absolute legend of the game

my absolute hero from England cricket in the mid 90's onwards, how he constructed an innings against some of the best fast bowlers in the world ever. If you needed a backs to the wall effort, there was no one better, a class apart form the rest of the batters in 90's side. RIP

Yeah, I was saying this to someone yesterday, because Gooch, Vaughan, Root, etc, well, frankly, they were playing in much better teams. Graham Thorpe was England's only consistent batsman for the best part of a decade, in a (let's be honest) pretty terrible team, and there were some really impressive bowlers around at the time - McGrath, Ambrose, Wasim Akram, etc. "If you can keep your head, while all around you are losing theirs" etc, he must have had incredible mental fortitude, so goodness knows how much pain he managed to endure in the last few years.

Gutted about Graham Thorpe. Watched him play so many times in the 90s. Never knew he was funny until I saw this, either. Really sad. I really hope his family know how much enjoyment he brought to so many people.

    Thorpey a true leg-end

Thorpey was a true batsman of class.Whenever a batting crisis occured (and they were frequent) he was "our go to man" to dig us out. The volume of runs per innings he scored was immense and he was more than a useful fielder.

In a crisis he was the best cricketer in the world to come in and steady the ship. His comeback 124 against South Africa in 2003 was amazing. When he came back in 2003 he averaged over 60.

The all time three best batsman in the world (in my opinion) to come in during a crisis and save the match are Graham Thorpe, Steve Waugh and Rahul Dravid. If I choose three batsman to bat for my life, it would no doubt be those three. This 124 by Graham Thorpe after a year out as well as his 119 not out against the WI in 2004 when England were 90/4 or something shows that he is one of the best English batsman ever. Would have averaged over 50 and been captain if he hadn't had all the personal problems.
