We were devastated at the loss of Dean Jones, Andrew Symonds, Phil Hughes and Warney. Australia went through a terrible period. You don’t see these coming. In dark days we stick together 🇦🇺 🏴 🏏
Great player. I saw him score his first county championship century in 1989. It was against Hampshire at Basingstoke. I was sat by a lady wearing a Surrey hat, I said to her, that lad looks a bit good. She replied, that's my son and he'll play for England!!! Malcolm marshall played for Hampshire in that match and now they're both gone. Very sad, RIP 😥
Happy memories watching Thorpe battle this mega aussie squad with Ritchie and Tony commentating, this was my era of test cricket. It’s no worse now, just different, I miss these guys. Thanks CA from England.
Respect always from this Aussie cricket supporter. There was a period of time where he displayed a technical standard of the highest level. His open willingness to embrace the contest was always on show and a great legacy for any cricketer to follow. So sorry to hear that his personal struggles overwhelmed him. I don’t know at all what a contributing factor cricket was to his overall wellbeing but I know of many who have struggled through this game, myself one of them. RIP Thorpey
Thanks to Cricket Australia for this tribute to Graham Thorpe. Very sad to lose Graham well before his time, and sure cricket fans all around the world are also sad at his passing. He was unfortunate that his career coincided with a poor era for English cricket, and a dominant one for Australia. Graham Gooch carried the England batting for the first half of the 90s, then Graham Thorpe did it into the new century. He was also a very popular player who was always good to watch. To average 45 in an era when England struggled was a tremendous achievement. RIP Graham, a world class batsman and a gentleman.
Well said, Peter. I do wonder if, had there been a couple of other batsmen who stepped up to the plate (other than Athers - who can forget that duel with Alan Donald?), would Graham's average been closer to 50? Darn sure it would have been in today's game. A sad, sad loss, with no-one outside the family and close friends any the wiser about the mystery illness.
Thorpe was one of a handful of our players in the 90s who actually delivered on their potential. 55 is no age to go. Condolences to his friends and family.
@Remen-tj3ph no the test match pitches were much flatter then than it is now. 600-700 scores were pretty common then. Still averaging 44 is not a joke.
RIP Graham Thorpe.. made good runs whilst facing some of the best bowling attacks of all time in that period. Warne and McGrath, Wasim and Waqar, Walsh and Ambrose, Donald and Pollock , Muralitharan, Kumble… no let up whatever country you faced back then. Also good to see the full extent of the grounds being used then not the boundary ropes being in 3 meters like they are today.
Wonderful batman, a hero of mine in the 90's. By far England's best batsman in the 90's averaging 45 against some of the best bowlers that have ever lived (and in not such a great team). Could play pace and spin just as well and had an elegant style. RIP Thorpey
Man, this guy (despite being a left handed batsman) is perhaps along with Nathan Astle the only player who played Mcgrath and scored runs of him. Despite how great Lara/Tendulkar both of them sturggled aginst Mcgrath esp in Aus, but he did not just play him in Aus, but also scored runs of him in England. Any English fans can tell why he wasn't that successful in the ODI setup, tremendous red-ball player allright. RIP.
People these days come out with all sorts of nonsense, Lara has scored 4 hundreds in Australia, Tendulkar has 6 hundreds in Australia, even when McGrwth did get Tendulkar out it was down to diabolical unpiring decision from Steve Bucknor. I mean Thorpe was good but to say that he was the only player to score runs against McGrath and that the likes of Lara and Tendulkar struggled is pure nonsense. BTW Thorpe has given credit to Lara for teaching him finer points about batsmanship.
@@seanmcbride1 Mcgrath practically owned lara to the point telling it out in the open in the press, he'd get him out 1st ball for his 300 wicket and guess what he did...Lara did score hundreds against him, but in the entire series, it always seemed he was tentative against him. As for Sachin, see how many of those centuries came when Mcgrath was not playing. Fact is it's only Astle and this guy who looked confident against Mcgrath
Two lefties Saeed Anwar and Graham Thorpe played Mcgrath well. Wasim Akram has praised Thorpe ,after his sad demise. Anil kumble has said ,he was tough to get out.
He played vital innings and involved great partnership with Nasser Hussain during the 1997 Ashes in England and great victory against the Australia both played brilliantly well RIP Graham Paul Thorpe you will be remembered forever
What was remarkable about Thorpey as a batsman is he revelled under pressure. Most of his hundreds were either backs to the wall or in tight matches, while he scored loads of 70s that won or saved matches. He was at his best when the odds were stacked against him, often getting out for low scores in high scoring matches that were heading to bore draws. He was the opposite of David Warner, whose similar average is inflated by 335 not out and other high scores vs terrible bowling attacks in Australia when the team dominated matches. In that sense, Thorpe probably averaged 55 when it counted and 35 when it was a nothing match heading for a draw. Warner would be the opposite, probably 30 in important games vs 60 on flat tracks where Aus scored 500+. RIP Thorpey, one of England's greatest big match players.
Travis Head seems to have inherited this mantle. Extraordinary player for my money, look at the number of huge matches / innings where he’s absolutely turned up.
Thorpe epitomised class and controlled swagger. His neckerchief and 40's style hair cut, played beautifully and quietly in the middle order in 100 tests with an average over 45. Great man, good batsmen, huge loss.
I grew up watching thorpe playing many test innings. He was an outstanding player in a struggling side. Very strange to hear of his passing because of all those memories.
Thorpe and Robin Smith were the only English batsmen to put up an honest fight for England against us Aussies for many years. Graham Thorpe will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences to his family and friends from this Australian.
RIP Graham Thorpe. As a kiwi I remember Nathan Astles 222 at Lancaster Park like it was yesterday. But I also remember Thorpes flawless 200 in the same match.
Yaa..Nathan Astle's heroics in 4th innings stole the limelight worldwide...but Thorpey's double hundred was very elegant...classy knock of 200 in 230 balls....
Pugnacious and Tenacious. One of best stylish left handed batter i have ever seen good both off the front and back foot with minimal effort and this is not because he has passed away now. R.I.p
This was my favourite innings by an adversary in the Warne-McGrath era, not till Stokes scored his century in Perth did this effort get surpassed and truthfully this was a better Aussie attack. The dismissal delivery was a stunning piece of work by Warne & Healy: Thorpe got a good one. It is ironic he fell to Warne as both gentlemen developed cricket in Australia and England; Thorpe coached NSW for a time, hence both contributed to Ashes contests and global cricket and its history is better for it. I am as sad as when we lost Warne & Symonds as Thorpe had much more to contribute. Condolences to all concerned & RIP sir.
Had the highlights from sky sports of this innings on vhs for years. Got lost when I moved. Always had a fighting chance while Thorpe was at the crease. As soon as he was out you knew it was game over.
Thanka to the Auss8es for posting this and for their lovely comments. Im sure his loved ones appreciate it. We felt the sams about Warney when he passed. They both went too soon. RIP to the greats of the game.

Love Thorpe's batting: short backlift - all the power coming through really quick hands. Just watch how he whops through those pulls. Top coach too.
