  • This excursion was part of a tribute to honour UK Railtours' late owner, John Farrow, who passed away in 2020. As one of Mr Farrow's favourite steam locomotives, Clan Line had the privilege of heading this tour from London Victoria to Sherborne, via Woking and Salisbury, returning by the same route. A memorial service was held at Sherborne Abbey Church during the break in Sherborne. All profits from the trip are being donated to the Royal Free Charity.
On the outward journey, I filmed at Winchfield and on the approach to Tisbury, where there was a temporary speed restriction in place. A quick trip to the Yeovil Railway Centre meant I got to see Clan Line being serviced and turned. The return filming didn't go to plan when the service train I was on terminated at Salisbury. But, I did see Clan Line as she picked up speed after departing Sherborne, and again as she departed Salisbury.
Great work by everyone at MNLPS; Clan Line looked fantastic as always.

    Hi Hilary
Couldn't get to see it myself but your excellent filming made up for it.

I was on that trip and Clan Line was absolutely flying through Winchfield. The return trip was equally as good, I've never been been through Templecombe as fast! I've travelled behind Clan Line on many occasions and this trip was one of the very best for performance. The late John Farrow would have been impressed. The highlight of the day though was his memorial service in Sherborne Abbey, not even a sparking performance by Clan Line could upstage that. A wonderful and memorable day.

It sounds as though the whole day was a truly fitting tribute for a well loved and well respected gentleman. Hilary

I wasn't aware the diesel ever did assist, other than as a generator.

@@johnjephcote7636 I think some tours have a diesel on the back to drag the whole consist on a turning manoeuvre, which certainly wasn't needed this time. Sometimes you can hear the diesel giving a loco a helpful shove. I was on one of the Steam Dreams sunset trips recently and at times all I could hear was the sound of the diesel chugging away!

    Another superb video Hils.
I swear I could almost smell the smell.
And the sound: oft unremarked but crisp and clear. Why do 3-cylinder locos always seem to have a syncopated exhaust beat?
