  • Clan Line was chosen this year to pull RTC's End of Southern Steam tour, marking the 55th anniversary of the day the last steam service ran on Southern metals.
The trip ran outward from Victoria to Yeovil, with passengers being diesel-hauled the rest of the way down to Weymouth. After servicing at the Yeovil Railway Centre, Clan Line ran down to Weymouth to bring the tour back up to London Waterloo. Some technical problems in the Dorchester area (I believe) made the return journey run later than planned, and so viewing points were hastily rearranged.
Locations: Chertsey, Winchfield, Templecombe, Upwey, Micheldever and Hook. Apologies for the camera focus issues at the first two locations.

Well you certainly put some work into this Hilary, and it really paid off, absolutely marvellous and the table shots were a real bonus. Wasn't she just a picture, a real credit to those who worked hard to turn her out for this occasion.
Well done everyone not least yourself.

Busy day Hils, thanks for your efforts in the heat. Turntable shots were particularly interesting 😃

Thanks Roger. It was a bit of a canter across the counties, but enjoyable. 😊 Hilary

Just top footage Hilary - and well planned, even if you had to change them, it looks like you had a Plan B! Cheers, Brian

Excellent video, you certainly covered some miles to get 6 shots! I live in Sherborne so would normally have seen it there but there were two top and tail 47s going to Weymouth so I decided to go down to Dorchester and Upwey for them. Subscribed.

Thank you for your nice comments Nick. Clan Line always puts on a good show, so it’s worth going the extra mile(s) to see her 😊 Hilary

Great stuff. I think I heard her lose her footing on the climb through Bincombe Tunnel…wet rails, no doubt. Bulleid Pacifics are my hero steam locomotives!

This commentates 55 years since steam on the southern region ended

Yes, it certainly does. It was the first time Clan Line had been down to Weymouth for many years, I believe.

Wow , looks as its not needing diesel assist ?

No, diesel didn’t do much but was on the back to take the coaches and passengers from Yeovil to Weymouth. Clan Line initially stayed at Yeovil for servicing and turning. It’s the only way they can turn things around.
