    1:06 "Quietly under the radar, the BBC slipped two episodes onto iPlayer". No, Kevin, they've been marketing the hell out of it. If the launch of the 2024 series is what he calls "quiet", just how much advertising does he expect to see? Did he expect Russel T. Davies to personally come to his house and scream "The new series of Doctor Who starts on the 11th of May!!!!!!!!!" directly into his face?

    I know these conservative pundits love mocking the pronoun stuff but for this it literally makes sense for Maestro to be they/them. You’re so right, Will.
    Maestro is an entity, child of the Toymaker that exists outside the plane of our existence, that takes the appearance of a form we consider human.
    They’re an entity. Neither male not female. It makes in universe sense in the context of the story, but they just can’t wrap their minds around it, because their brains are tiny and robotic “beep boop detect usage of pronouns, black people, trans people and criticise it beep boop”

      There is a similar situation in another fandom, where the character being non-binary makes so much sense that even if you were a hateful bigot, you can’t argue against the pronoun usage of they-them, Frankie stein in Monster High is now nonbinary! They are and have always been a character thats literally stitched together from parts of different people, of different genders! Even their brain!

    As soon as I hear ‘family values’ used in this way I know it’s not good. Why is boring racism, sexism and other intolerance ‘family values’? Families come in all shapes and sizes and my family will certainly follow the incredible ‘woke’ teachings of doctor who

      @SunniestAutumn 4 месяца назад +7

      Yeah, that's the idea with dogwhistles. Who in their right mind would oppose "family values," are you some kind of a monster? Of course, when you know that "family values" means "anti-choice, anti-women, anti-trans, anti-gay, anti-black" it's obvious the person is being racist, but if you have a day job or are like a single mother or study all day, you may not be online enough to know that context. So they say Doctor Who should promote "family values" and to you it makes sense, it is a family show after all, but then all these people come out of nowhere to claim that promoting "family values" is sexist and racist? Those people sound, to you, like they have a few screws loose, even when they are 100% correct.
      The people using dog whistles know they are doing it, the people calling them out know they're doing it, most of the people seeing the conversation know they're doing it, but some people, be it 5%, even 1% of people watching, don't know that it's a dog whistle and they don't have a reason to not take the person at their word. It's insidious, manipulative, but at the core of it it's also lying. We should just call them out, not call the people using them racist or sexist, but point out what the dog whistle being used means in reality and let the people watching draw their own conclusions. Most humans have empathy and respond well to reason, even though the racists don't. Racists are ultimately really bad at hiding it and when it's calmly called out in public, they tend to paint themselves into a corner.

Also don't panic, it was NOT you, let me start by saying that and leveling with you right here I can promise you that it's not you who did this. In fact I can't remember who it was, but the fact there are now people so synical out there they will not listen to opinions, on whatever side, doesn't matter right or left, that's just sad. I'm here, writing out stuff because I don't have the ability to just... upload memes or photos ro show any opinions I might have, so I express myself through text. After all that, at one point, after providing as much argument to back up any opinion I had, after going backwards and forwards with whoever that particular user was, they just essentially virtually tried to "gut punch" me by saying "they had no interest in what I had to say" and I was a troll. But I had the last laugh because I just laughed and moved on. If people don't want to know what I have to say, fine, I'll just move on if that's what they want, I've got better things to do with my life. Meanwhile I can bring some positive perspective here, firstly if I'm not mistaken, I think I've seen you figuratively speaking, around in variosu comment sections and, at least from what I can rmember you discuss stuff fairly reasonably, although it might have been a while back. There was also one of the coolest interactions ever I had with another user where they were going all synic about Doctor Who, not really explaining their point, but I came on in and chatted to them a bit and they were genuinely a cool person, and this was then solidified when I mentioned I was blind, we had this amazing discussion about media and about how I experience things, and even the way the person reacted to me in terms of Doctor Who was different. It wasn't rude, it wasn't condescending anymore, they got it and what was amazing was they even started to explain their points to me as well. Now that, that is amazing discussion, and then that resulted in someone else joining in as well and all sorts of amazing points going back and fourth with no demonizing/villifying at all, it was such a cool discussion in the end, and it's stuff like that why I legit love the internet. I know that might sound a bit soppy, and yes I know this reply is now getting very long indeed so I do apologize, but as I say, I can't just upload the latest and greatest photos or memes to explain a point of mine quickly, so that's my disadvantage. But I wish to give some food for thought as well. If someone asked me hay Jukesy would you like your sight, I'd answer no, not unless it's so advanced I can turn it on and off, because I have never seen in my life. I would actually be worried my brain would make me fall unconscious or something as colours and even shapes and faces will be in my mind for the first time, and, well who knows what would happen. On one hand it'd be amazing I'd be able to experience so many videogames properly, on the other, it'd be like starting from scratch, learning how the world works from a very different perspective, which is fine but then would the brain take it? Sorry, I know this comment's gotten really huge so I will end here for now and wait for anyone else to reply.

The 2005 reboot did better in one night with no iPlayer no smartphones, tablets etc. This season debut in 2024 is absolutely atrocious. I enjoy touching grass it’s much better. But it seems you like the show Doctor Who in name only with its constant bombarding message being forced down your throat. Glad you’re happy with it. The Eurovision voting thing and Israel doing well also needs to be taken in the context of the Boycott. With less people watching Eurovision specifically because of Israel's genocide, that means you're left with more viewers who are pro-Zionist and therefore vote for Israel. The point wasn't about Israel winning or losing - it's about refusing to engage with the contest at all until it suspends Israel, just as it suspended Russia for invading Ukraine (on that note, Azerbaijan should also be held in contempt because of ethnically cleaning Armenians from Artsakh... yeah, there's lots of fucked up stuff happening).

      I think it feels off cause it’s a return to how the show was in 2005, it’s essentially a relic of a bygone era. It’s like if the show suddenly went back to the format it had in the 70’s, it’s cool for a bit but then the nostalgia wares off and you want to see something new
      Or at least that’s how I feel. I remember loving The Star Beast cause it reminded me of all the good times watching the show in the mid-late 2000’s, but then the nostalgia wore off and I was left feeling like I wanted something more. At least Gary and Phil didn't have the term 'woke' or other buzzwords to fall back on, they had to come up with some great story about how God spoke to them, whilst they were loitering around a children's toy shop and told them to save the children from the evil cartoons.
    Their justification was that that ET was here to make kids like men, Heman was trying to encourage satan worship and they seemed to be very anti violence and 'think of the children!' about everything.
    That was in the 1980s, here we are forty years later with these two clowns doing the exact same thing but they don't even have the cool/sussy origin story to validate themselves with.

    I've been thinking about the casting of Doctors recently after watching videos from various channels. To clarify, I've got no problem with Ncuti Gatwa and hope he's a great Doctor. I wasn't the biggest fan of Jodie, but i still enjoyed moments of her run and I think she was always going to be up against it from the outset.
    To me, it's very obvious that the BBC and/or other stakeholders noticed the history of the Doctor always being a white male. As a result, they casted Jodie, incorporated Jo Martin's Doctor into the narrative (underrated imo), and then casted Ncuti as the first black male Doctor. I personally think that regardless of what narrative choices they have made or will make, it's clearly an executive choice to remove the whiteness of the character and not be perceived as racist.
    So they chose that route... fair enough. There's been benefits to that decision (more opportunities for other actors/actresses), but also negatives. I wonder if the BBC would've made the same decisions if they knew the ratings would take a complete nose dive (viewing habits have changed, but the numbers are undeniably down a large %. Not sure about Disney+ to be fair).
    My question is, was there anything wrong with the Doctor actually just being a white male? The show was more successful when a white british man played the part, and appealed to a larger demographic of people overall. I know of women who couldn't care less about Whittaker's Doctor, because she wasn't a "sexy" man that they were attracted to and ultimately wanted to watch. They'd much rather have a white male like Tennant or Smith in the role than their own gender.
    Maybe the BBC should have kept the Doctor a white male as it appealed to the majority of the UK's population. The regeneration rule could've been made to have gender and ethnicity locked throughout each regeneration to be the same. Writers could have created great and major characters (Time Lords from the Academy etc) who were black, women, trans, etc.
    Diversity has existed in Doctor Who with other characters and companions for a very long time. As time goes on, i think the show may have shot themselves in the foot by changing the Doctor from a purely white male. It's a shame really because Michelle Gomez was great as the Master. It works in theory, but you've gotta consider what the majority of the audience want and have been used to for decades.
    Lastly, it kinda looks odd to me that the Doctor would go through multiple ethnicities (timeless child + Jo Martin, a narrative justification to remove the whiteness of the Doctor), then have literally 12 white males. It's just weird in my opinion. May as well have kept it consistent.
    I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether there was anything wrong with the Doctor just being a white male.

    • @mr.timusproductions116
      @mr.timusproductions116 4 месяца назад +4

      Well, this question can be answered by anyone very simply.
      No there wasn't an issue with The Doctor being a white male. There's also nothing wrong with The Doctor being not a white male either.
      Sure, ratings suffered in Jodie's era... But you know what else suffered? *_The writing_*
      I love Jodie's era, admittedly, but even I can say that, yes, the writing was flawed.
      Maybe, instead of focusing on the race and gender of the person chosen to play The Doctor, you could instead focus on the quality of the stories they were given-
      Also, Regeneration is a lottery, it's random, so it stands to chance, there could be 12 white men in a row, and that's just how chance played out-

      A point I'd question here is you referring to "they" as if it's all the same people making the decisions here. It's pretty clearly Chris Chibnell's decision that he was going to cast a woman, and it's RTD who cast Ncuti, so it's not all part of the same decision making process. Davies clearly doesn't have a problem casting a white man for the Doctor, because he already did that with Eccleston and Tennant. But I think Ncuti clearly has the star power right now.
      I think questioning the oddness of the doctor having "12 white males in a row" from an in universe perspective strikes me oddly too - it's clearly the case that Dr Who is a product of its times, and it would have been radical back in the 60s to be casting non-white character actors in the lead role. People are going to go back to Talons of Weng Chiang and see that however great a story it is, it does also contain actors in yellow-face playing chinese characters - which was seen as acceptable in it's time, but is not acceptable now. It just doesn't make sense to me to think of the casting of past doctors as showing up a huge coincidence in universe the way you have framed it, as if that breaks any suspension of disbelief any more than understanding that the way it was filmed in the past explains why all the alien planets look like studio sets or quarries, or most of the aliens look like men in suits.

    As a 65 year old Dr Who fan (yes a boomer), I do bemoan the need the include every gender representation, sexual partner choice, physical limitation and race into modern TV for no apparent reason other than check box representation. I agree that everybody has a right to be represented in culture but why all at once and at a relentless level. In my mind recent series have taken a long stroll down a path too far. Please don't compare my approach / views to these two muppets, who quote woke while having no idea of what they are pigeon holing. I do love your work Mr Tardis.

      I get what you're saying but I don't think most of the casting is box ticking. Ncuti is an amazing actor, Jodie Whitakker is a great actor, Mandip Gill is great too. They still hold auditions and give parts to who is the best. Ncuti wasn't even the first choice

      I do have to agree and I’m all for representation, I’ve got mostly LGBT friends and I will go to bat for any of them. The problem is the abundance, it’s almost like it’s purposely giving the haters ammo. Like that Always A Twist At The End sequence, why did it need to have every race under the sun and multiple people in wheelchairs? Why does every episode have to involve a mention of LGBT people or an appearance from one? It takes what should be good representation and just bombards you with it constantly to the point where it feels like Russell’s just beating you over the head to show you how with it he is.
      Like there’s a good way of doing this. Ruby’s canonically bi, explore that further, if Carla is LGBT why not explore that further she would have been LGBT during a time where it was less widely accepted that’s a very fascinating area to explore (hell why not have an episode exploring that, go full Pride and have an episode about the gays and lesbians support the miners protests and have a young Carla be involved). Why does almost every conversation Shirley has have to be based on her being in a wheelchair? The “sorry about the stairs” and Kate’s Toymaker induced meltdown at her is enough she’s a fun enough character on her own and she doesn’t need to be reminding us every time she appears, if anything it just pigeonholes her into “just the wheelchair using character” when she’s much more than that.
      Like there’s a good way to do representation and that’s just by making it normal. Don’t constantly point it out, weave it naturally into the story. Carla and Cherry are good examples, they don’t draw attention to the fact they’re a black family who adopted Ruby, they just made them a loving family who you can root for and love seeing work as a unit. If you’re gonna represent then make it an element of the character and the story not the whole story and if it needs to be a more part then do it right. Rosa’s a good example, that explored racism in America at that time really well, and it wasn’t constantly bombarding you with “we’re people of colour!” It actually explored it in a way that was fascinating and showed the ugliness of humanity in what is tragically recent history

      @mrcritical6751 I don't see how weaving background characters into a dance number (which sucked) counts as taking over a whole story. But if you can't handle it, that's fine. Everything doesn't have to be for everyone, Who can be in some weird niche like it always has been internationally.

    • @mrcritical6751
      @mrcritical6751 4 месяца назад

      @@bennettnez4711 I didn’t say it was taking over the whole story, I was more just thinking it wasn’t done naturally, it felt very in your face in that moment. Like I can take wheelchair users in media, hell I have nothing bad to say about them in real life, I think the issue I have is when they overuse people of a particular group because then it feels less like they’re trying to organically insert a group into the plot and more like they’re overcompensating

      @mrcritical6751 yeah I just can't relate. It's all made up nonsense and magic and Sci fi. Like I'm way more distracted by the fact that his box is bigger on the inside which is EXTREMELY unrealistic. So having a cast that isn't a mirror image of myself is pretty much at the very bottom of my list of logic gripes with the show
