I thought this reference was pretty obvious, in a show where the main character has gone by "The Doctor" for the last 60 years. About the Meep pronounce scene. The joke is not "The docter is a bigot" it's "The Docter is practically alsways referred to with the definat artical, like the Meep". Thats why I honestly find the joke funny.

It was to have a bonding moment with the Meep and have them apperir more understandable and cute which was to add surprises whenever the plot twist was revealed. Just because something isnt directly progressing the plot doesnt mean its dragging anything down or is usless to the story.

I'm so glad you cover these. I always feel I need to educate myself on the 'views' of people like this, just so when I meet one in the wild I'm ready to counter their claims. But if I watch too many of their videos it not only supports them, but screws up my algorithm so I end up getting disillusioned with the DW fanbase because it's being unfairly represented. Being able to watch a number without doing either is a godsend! As a disabled man, who om used to agree as a teen (in the 90s) but gave up because it seemed an impossible dream, it thrills me that the representation is increasing, but angers me how much added rubbish disabled actors have to face just for being themselves.

Jackie slaps him after he messes up and Rose misses a year, Francine slaps him (and I think he says “it’s always the mothers, every time”) and then when Sylvia slaps him RTD is kind of “completing the set” and the doctor even references this in his line afterwards, though I forget exactly what it is. Also is “we choose to let it go” not a reference to Capaldi’s regeneration? Very similar to his last line I think?

As Jackie, Francine & Sylvia are mothers trying to protect their daughters from the Doctor (in Sylvia’s case especially as Donna would die if she remembers the Doctor). It’s not like the times Amy slaps Rory or River slapping the Doctor which are either bad comedy or melodrama.

I liked that scene, but what a lot of people seem to not like is the wording of it. It's the "did you just assume my gender" thing that these people constantly quote, so for them it feels on the nose and like a personal attack. Yes, it's very realistic for Rose to think a lot about her pronouns at this stage of her life. As someone who works with young people, I often meet ones who are transitioning and it's important to respect their pronouns, because they are still forging those identtiies.

It's weird that all these people keep harping on the age thing. It's something that happens in media all the time. Tom Holland and Zendaya are nearly 30 and had been playing teenagers for years. And, it isn't new. All the power Rangers, teenagers with attitude, all mostly late 20s. 18 playing 15, is probably one of the least egregious examples. They really have so few points that they are scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

Gate of Theories had us all thinking he was going to be some raving lunatic with the title being so accusatory; "RUINED By Wokeness", but then he comes out with some good points, (and some bad ones). He is a victim of using rage for clickbait, even though he was quite level-headed. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

I suspect you won't like his stance but IMHO he's significantly more nuanced than Nerdrotic or Geeks and Gamers (that's a low bar to jump). That first person Gate of Theories seemed okay for the most part, I know Bowlstrek, Nerdrotic and Geeks & Gamers are likely to just be a 'vote Conservative' political party broadcast like they normally are. Sometimes these channels may agree with certain things that the grifters and bad actors believe, but we mustn't fall for the trap of lumping them all in as the same. But I do think it's important to show some good faith towards those who don't necessarily mean any harm by what they say. He's also so young that it's possible he does not have perspective on how this is an ongoing thing with DW, it's not altogether that new (being progressive about gender) and how it's really just a science fiction thing. Sci Fi has always interrogated gender in different ways. It's just that now it's being done in a more mainstream way so people notice it and think it's a political message.

The most annoying part is that videos like the ones you reacted to get so many views as well and they often convince some people to stop watching the show because it's apparently too "woke" or trying to send 'the message'. Also the fact that around 90% of these videos often have zero arguments to back up their claims and are often just 10-20 minute rants about how the show is supposedly "woke" and making huge reaches (clearly from either not watching the show at all or not having watched it in a while) rather than actually focusing their reviews on the highlights or downsides of the episode they're talking about like a good reviewer should do.

One thing I've noticed watching a few Fandom Menace podcasts is that there is something very important missing in them that is present in most other shows that discuss media: discourse. As anyone who is old enough to remember Siskel and Ebert will tell you, people get very passionate about media they like and often times they won't always agree on a given piece of media. One of my favorite podcasts is Castle Super Beast with Pat and Woolie of Two Best Friends fame, and they'll get in disagreements over video games or other media from time to time. But I honestly can't think of a single example of any these Fandom Menace influencers ever having a major disagreement with each other. The closest thing I can think of is when they finally kicked Overlord DVD to the curb for constantly reporting on inaccurate "leaks" from the entertainment industry. The fact that there is very little disagreement between them regarding the media they consume shows just how much groupthink has set in with them. It's gotten to the point where one of them will either misinterpret or straight up make up something that they saw in a TV show or movie, the rest of them will nod in agreement that it happened, and before you know it you'll see their followers repeating it all over social media. It really is pathetic how they no longer seem to have any independent thought whatsoever.
Your opinion. Plenty of their audience disagree on some of their individual takes... they frequently disagree with each other. Doesn't stop us from thinking and liking their content/critique, which is far more driven by story and worldbuilding... or its absence. Okay, I discussed the backlash with my friends (and I always listen to my friends because they're funny, civilised people), and here's my conclusion: The "woke stuff" (is "woke" even a real word? It just sounds wack, as if a five-year-old just invented it out of nowhere without setting a definition properly) is subtle. As in, I didn't even notice that Rose was non-binary until the end, because I was to busy having fun with the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate, not to mention THE MEEP! And even then, I wasn't offended at all when I did put two and two together, because Rose is a nice character, and any pronoun is as cool as bowties (they're universally cool, and they'll always will be). The opinions of those "fans" are especially stupid, because Russell T. Davies effectively started out by making shows that actively promote what some would call "wokeness" (for example, Queer As Folk). Not to mention, the revival (as well as expanded universe stuff in the Wilderness Years, like Izzy Sinclair and Fitz Kreiner) has always been about LGBT representation, so why bother bring up that you hate that sort of thing now? Yep, these videos were OBVIOUSLY made by "diehard fandom". And finally, Doctor Who is supposed to be a celebration of humanity AS A WHOLE. I first saw him doing a review of Commando with the Critical Drinker and thought he was really funny. Mr.Tardis, you keep bringing up how the children’s in need Davros design is only a prequel design (which it is) but it’s also how he’ll look moving forward as stated by RTD, they have changed Davros’s design and timeline for the rest of the show.
He hasn't though... You can still watch all those unedited Davros stories on the iPlayer. You've still got the DVD and Blu-Ray releases. Nothing has changed about Davros in the past.

The episode shows it's polite to ask someone's pronouns, however it's ok if it takes you a while to process and if you make mistakes as it helps towards mutual respect and understanding.
I concur. My only problems with it were, 1) I feel like The Doctor of all people would ask someone’s pronouns after so many years of time and space and meeting aliens that don’t have human gender, after all, his race literally don’t have that concept, 2) I wish Rose was more of a character.

Colour-blind casting was intended to give actors a chance to play classical characters from which they were previous barred. There's only so many times you can play Othello before wanting to try your hand at the Prince of Denmark. Here, it's just confusing in a show that was meant to get children excited about history. Since Isaac Newton isn't a fictional character, and this is so obviously incorrect, it's only been placed there to generate unrest. And when the showrunner seems hell-bent on upsetting fans, I don't see how this helps anyone. But I'm sure my point will be lost in all the shouting. 😢
"the doctor isn't from anywhere and doesn't fit in anywhere" is a solid point. Like Moffat brought back gallifrey and bigged it up as the doctor searching for it but realised why? The doctor ran AWAY from gallifray, their rarely returns willingly.
Honestly, Gate of Theories doesn't seem like an inherently bad guy. Maybe he goes too far with the whole Anti-Woke rhetoric, but I could see him and Mr TARDIS potentially having a debate, and both being reasonable and civilised with one-another (something of a lost art in today's climate). The others may as well just put on their KKK hoods, or their "Troll Lives Matter" T-shirts, and be done with it.
I'm pleasantly surprised that Bowlestrek didn't deadname Rose throughout his video, still absolutely insane 'points' being made and bigotry the whole way through though... There are some genuine criticisms to be made of The Star Beast that relate to the handling of Rose, but these people are so obsessed with being angry and hateful that they're incapable of landing on a single one of those criticisms.

The problem with The Meep pronoun scene is it makes Rose look like a pedant. I know trans people and they don’t go around policing other peoples interactions with any new person that they meet. If they have a mixture of masculine and feminine characteristics they will just bring up their language preferences casually in conversation themselves. It actually paints a negative image of trans people. Most trans people are more chill than this and the episode does trans people a dis-service by making them out to be busy-bodies, policing everyone’s social interactions. It’s a problem which is exacerbated by the character being so underwritten. I know this won’t be a popular opinion here, but that’s how I feel about it. Also the lines at the end about how the Doctor, like Rose is both male and female and neither and more was really tone deaf. Trans woman don’t see themselves as both male and female and neither and more, they just see themselves as female. Maybe I didn’t get it and she decided in that moment she wasn’t a trans woman and was instead non-binary, but I think if that’s the case, RTD’s introduction of the first trans character in Doctor Who is undercut by having her change from a trans woman to a non-binary person by the end of the episode and I reckon he probably shouldn’t have done that if he wanted this creative choice to have resonance.
I love that the showrunners knew how these folk would react, but just did it anyway. In other words, not pandering to their bigotry. Disabled, trans, gay, black folk, etc can't exist in a world with time travelling-police boxes, aliens, a guy with two hearts and all other sorts of crazy stuff for The Triggered Ones.

I watched a few of these last week out of curiosity but what shocked me the most was the official BBC Culture review by Neil Armstrong of the episode specifically mentioning "The Message" that was catnip to all of these videos & cited. The world moves on, some people do not. It's depressing to see people who genuinely seem invested in pop culture properties like Star Trek and Doctor Who fail to absorb any of the positive messaging about compassion, identity, tolerance and the diversity that exists not just in the strange alien creatures these characters meet but within the human race itself. I feel like Gate of Theories is just a young guy leaving the far-right political bubble that a lot of teenage boys find themselves in, and are trying to realign himself politically but is struggling with past piases and viewpoints. What he's saying is something I think 19/20 year old me would have said - "I agree with more wokeness but this is *too* woke". And sometimes he is close to having a decent point or understanding why, but just fully misses the end goal. Rose asking the Meep for pronouns can come off as forced and awkward, but Rose is a teenage trans girl - of course she's going to ask, pronouns are something that matters a lot to her. The "Let it go" line is similarly odd, but if you read it as Donna just having a jab at her best friend, which she is, then it works better. Although I think changing that line to "Something *this face* could never do", rather than "Something men can't do" works better. Doesn't fit with the message but is so much less clunky and weird.
So we've watched most of the classics...And loved most of new who untill it went what we would call woke..But we're not fans?? Well we're not fans now because the show is awful hence the viewing numbers...But we were. Just except we hate this crap and we will continue to voice our oppinions.

Like it sounds like he doesn't understand why Donna didn't die. He just thinks it's because Rose is special. His brain is so full of hate he can't follow the plot of a fairly standard Doctor Who episode.
I wouldn't say that's a fair comparison as it's a 1-off special (that's also feature-length) that also played in cinemas, was a multi-Doctor story and was given a simulcast in nearly 100 other countries (as opposed to dropping on streaming at the same time to watch whenever someone wants).
Keep doing what you're doing. These people need to be called out. They are doing nothing but spreading hate. Representation is not propaganda. It's not wrong to have a few criticisms but you have a problem with even tiniest bit of representation, then you're wrong. I’ve re read the genesis screenplay online and there is only one reference to Davros having a “chair” and another by Davros himself to his “life support “when the Doctor threatens to turn it off permanently after the interrogated recording of Dalek defeats. Which I think is more than just splitting hairs. So it seems rubbish to view it more in discussion of disabilism” as a wheelchair than a life support. At best it has a duality of purpose when half his body is also missing. As well of course as being the implied inspiration for the Mark 3 design for the Kaled mutant.
Something I've seen go over most people's heads is that when Donna and Rose are repeating "Binary, Binary, Binary" - that's one of the last thing's Donna says as the DoctorDonna before the Doctor wipes her memory. She's remembering that event, and thus Rose is also remembering it. It's not a full on gender commentary (Although knowing RTD, he definitely saw it as a tongue in cheek moment as well.)

The 4th Doctor in his first episode "You may be a doctor but I'm "THE Doctor", the definite article you might say". I thought this reference was pretty obvious, in a show where the main character has gone by "The Doctor" for the last 60 years. This was also a couple episodes after Alpha Centauris second appearance and the Sontarans introduction too.

I'm so glad you cover these. I always feel I need to educate myself on the 'views' of people like this, just so when I meet one in the wild I'm ready to counter their claims. But if I watch too many of their videos it not only supports them, but screws up my algorithm so I end up getting disillusioned with the DW fanbase because it's being unfairly represented. Being able to watch a number without doing either is a godsend!
As a disabled man, who om used to agree as a teen (in the 90s) but gave up because it seemed an impossible dream, it thrills me that the representation is increasing, but angers me how much added rubbish disabled actors have to face just for being themselves.

Jackie slaps him after he messes up and Rose misses a year, Francine slaps him (and I think he says “it’s always the mothers, every time”) and then when Sylvia slaps him RTD is kind of “completing the set” and the doctor even references this in his line afterwards, though I forget exactly what it is.
Also is “we choose to let it go” not a reference to Capaldi’s regeneration? Very similar to his last line I think?

As Jackie, Francine & Sylvia are mothers trying to protect their daughters from the Doctor (in Sylvia’s case especially as Donna would die if she remembers the Doctor). It’s not like the times Amy slaps Rory or River slapping the Doctor which are either bad comedy or melodrama.

I loved that scene as I just thought it was a funny joke at the Doctors expense. Then on another level it is a part of Rose’s life and experience.
I liked that scene, but what a lot of people seem to not like is the wording of it. It's the "did you just assume my gender" thing that these people constantly quote, so for them it feels on the nose and like a personal attack. Their heads are just so far up their own asses that they can't for a moment imagine that it isn't about them.

Yes, it's very realistic for Rose to think a lot about her pronouns at this stage of her life. As someone who works with young people, I often meet ones who are transitioning and it's important to respect their pronouns, because they are still forging those identtiies.

It's the BBCs fault, Chibnall wasn't so bad. It's weird that all these people keep harping on the age thing. It's something that happens in media all the time. Tom Holland and Zendaya are nearly 30 and had been playing teenagers for years. And, it isn't new. All the power Rangers, teenagers with attitude, all mostly late 20s. 18 playing 15, is probably one of the least egregious examples. They really have so few points that they are scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

He is a victim of using rage for clickbait, even though he was quite level-headed. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

I'm sure based on that video this person is probably an okay guy, I can't say for sure. But I do think it's important to show some good faith towards those who don't necessarily mean any harm by what they say. Nerdrotic, Geeks and Gamers, Bowlstrek, the Quartering (not mentioned here but he's part of that movement), these guys are bad faith.
They don't care about what they talk about, just as long as you fall down that rabbit hole (and make them rich along the way). So I don't care what is said about them, they are deliberately causing harm. I don't think it's helpful to anyone to go on the attack against people who don't necessarily mean any harm.
Mr Tardis hasn't done that here though, but I do think there are some left-wing media commenters who would be less charitable.
He's also so young that it's possible he does not have perspective on how this is an ongoing thing with DW, it's not altogether that new (being progressive about gender) and how it's really just a science fiction thing. Sci Fi has always interrogated gender in different ways. It's just that now it's being done in a more mainstream way so people notice it and think it's a political message.

The most annoying part is that videos like the ones you reacted to get so many views as well and they often convince some people to stop watching the show because it's apparently too "woke" or trying to send 'the message'. Also the fact that around 90% of these videos often have zero arguments to back up their claims and are often just 10-20 minute rants about how the show is supposedly "woke" and making huge reaches (clearly from either not watching the show at all or not having watched it in a while) rather than actually focusing their reviews on the highlights or downsides of the episode they're talking about like a good reviewer should do.
Yeah I hate how the algorithm promotes the outrage merchants over the actual fans. It gives them a false sense of being in the majority.

One thing I've noticed watching a few Fandom Menace podcasts is that there is something very important missing in them that is present in most other shows that discuss media: discourse. As anyone who is old enough to remember Siskel and Ebert will tell you, people get very passionate about media they like and often times they won't always agree on a given piece of media. One of my favorite podcasts is Castle Super Beast with Pat and Woolie of Two Best Friends fame, and they'll get in disagreements over video games or other media from time to time. But I honestly can't think of a single example of any these Fandom Menace influencers ever having a major disagreement with each other. The closest thing I can think of is when they finally kicked Overlord DVD to the curb for constantly reporting on inaccurate "leaks" from the entertainment industry. The fact that there is very little disagreement between them regarding the media they consume shows just how much groupthink has set in with them. It's gotten to the point where one of them will either misinterpret or straight up make up something that they saw in a TV show or movie, the rest of them will nod in agreement that it happened, and before you know it you'll see their followers repeating it all over social media. It really is pathetic how they no longer seem to have any independent thought whatsoever.

Okay, I discussed the backlash with my friends (and I always listen to my friends because they're funny, civilised people), and here's my conclusion:
The "woke stuff" (is "woke" even a real word? It just sounds wack, as if a five-year-old just invented it out of nowhere without setting a definition properly) is subtle. As in, I didn't even notice that Rose was non-binary until the end, because I was to busy having fun with the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate, not to mention THE MEEP!
And even then, I wasn't offended at all when I did put two and two together, because Rose is a nice character, and any pronoun is as cool as bowties (they're universally cool, and they'll always will be).
The opinions of those "fans" are especially stupid, because Russell T. Davies effectively started out by making shows that actively promote what some would call "wokeness" (for example, Queer As Folk). Not to mention, the revival (as well as expanded universe stuff in the Wilderness Years, like Izzy Sinclair and Fitz Kreiner) has always been about LGBT representation, so why bother bring up that you hate that sort of thing now? Yep, these videos were OBVIOUSLY made by "diehard fandom".
And finally, Doctor Who is supposed to be a celebration of humanity AS A WHOLE. If it weren't, we'd just end up stuck in a Hell where The Celestial Toymaker is always praised, rather than rightfully criticised, for being an Oriental stereotype whose sentient dolls spout off the N-word whenever (thank goodness that we now have Neil Patrick Harris to the rescue). I first saw him doing a review of Commando with the Critical Drinker and thought he was really funny. He certainly didn't say anything hateful or whiny for the entire livestream, so I subscribed to his channel.

It does tickle me that the "colour-blind" casting of Isaac Newton will totally blow the minds of the right sort of people. But I didn't like that scene for other reasons (ie, how is the Doctor in an emergency situation if he can stop and have a chat with Newton, change the English word "mavity", and then get back in the Tardis and still crash out of control in a spaceship millions of light years beyond the edge of the universe)

Here, it's just confusing in a show that was meant to get children excited about history. Since Isaac Newton isn't a fictional character, and this is so obviously incorrect, it's only been placed there to generate unrest. Honestly, Gate of Theories doesn't seem like an inherently bad guy. Maybe he goes too far with the whole Anti-Woke rhetoric, but I could see him and Mr TARDIS potentially having a debate, and both being reasonable and civilised with one-another (something of a lost art in today's climate).

The problem with The Meep pronoun scene is it makes Rose look like a pedant. I know trans people and they don’t go around policing other peoples interactions with any new person that they meet. If they have a mixture of masculine and feminine characteristics they will just bring up their language preferences casually in conversation themselves.
It actually paints a negative image of trans people. Most trans people are more chill than this and the episode does trans people a dis-service by making them out to be busy-bodies, policing everyone’s social interactions. It’s a problem which is exacerbated by the character being so underwritten.
I know this won’t be a popular opinion here, but that’s how I feel about it.
Also the lines at the end about how the Doctor, like Rose is both male and female and neither and more was really tone deaf. Trans woman don’t see themselves as both male and female and neither and more, they just see themselves as female.
Maybe I didn’t get it and she decided in that moment she wasn’t a trans woman and was instead non-binary, but I think if that’s the case, RTD’s introduction of the first trans character in Doctor Who is undercut by having her change from a trans woman to a non-binary person by the end of the episode and I reckon he probably shouldn’t have done that if he wanted this creative choice to have resonance.
I don't think that's what Rose said about herself, but I'd have to watch it again.

But my actual emotional investment kinda died with that episode), coming in to say that I came back for the 60th anniversary specials and so far I have enjoyed both quite a lot. I feel like Gate of Theories is just a young guy leaving the far-right political bubble that a lot of teenage boys find themselves in, and are trying to realign himself politically but is struggling with past piases and viewpoints. And sometimes he is close to having a decent point or understanding why, but just fully misses the end goal. Rose asking the Meep for pronouns can come off as forced and awkward, but Rose is a teenage trans girl - of course she's going to ask, pronouns are something that matters a lot to her. The "Let it go" line is similarly odd, but if you read it as Donna just having a jab at her best friend, which she is, then it works better.
Although I think changing that line to "Something *this face* could never do", rather than "Something men can't do" works better. Doesn't fit with the message but is so much less clunky and weird.

I wouldn't say that's a fair comparison as it's a 1-off special (that's also feature-length) that also played in cinemas, was a multi-Doctor story and was given a simulcast in nearly 100 other countries (as opposed to dropping on streaming at the same time to watch whenever someone wants).
Keep doing what you're doing. These people need to be called out. They are doing nothing but spreading hate. Representation is not propaganda. It's not wrong to have a few criticisms but you have a problem with even tiniest bit of representation, then you're wrong. There are fans who enjoy the new Doctor Who but these people making it out that if you enjoy it, then you're committing some sort of crime.

Something I've seen go over most people's heads is that when Donna and Rose are repeating "Binary, Binary, Binary" - that's one of the last thing's Donna says as the DoctorDonna before the Doctor wipes her memory. She's remembering that event, and thus Rose is also remembering it. It's not a full on gender commentary (Although knowing RTD, he definitely saw it as a tongue in cheek moment as well.)
