Nah I guess he would have done it just for wearing the tshirt.
It is quite obvious what the guy's problem is - too many trans folx and too many gays. Maybe disabled people too.
BTW is it just me but he obviously has an English accent yet he pronounces beta in the American fashion as bay-ta rather than the British fashion which is bee-ta. Probably shows how much he has been influenced by the right wing US commentators (I call them commentators mainly because of the lack of a better term).
I am a proper old Doctor Who fan - I can remember snatches of Planet of the Spiders - and sure some of the modern era stories have been better than others, but there is still some gold in them thar hills.
On a side note I think your fan-wankery point about the 80s was probably undercut a bit by the fact that a couple of the specials also relied pretty heavily on fan-wankery.

One Piece is literally the wokest option as far as mainstream anime go. There are woker options, like series literally about (and sometimes by) LGBTQA+ individuals or other minority groups in Japan. But, when it comes to mainstream manga made by a cishet man, this is some of the wokest.
It's woker than you realize, Mr TARDIS.
There are sadly many anime in recent years that Chuds would have enjoyed. GATE is blatant nationalist, pro-military propaganda and Redo of Healer is just full on Rape Fantasty.
But, One Piece? That was "woke" since day one.
I want to give you some further talking points.
    1) One Piece has Fishmen. Their entire existence is an ever-evolving discussion of race, oppression, and slavery. Any story arc about them focuses on the fact they are enslaved and how they as a people have responded to this bigotry. It stumbles sometimes, but overall is an anti-racist message.
    2) There is an entire faction of the revolutionary army made up of gay, lesbian, bi, pan, nonbinary, and trans individuals who rebelled against the government because of their oppression. Their leader ate the Devil Fruit that gives hormone control and gives out magic HRT to their followers. Their right hand person is gender fluid and we never learn their gender assigned at birth. This happened in 2011! And it cames years before Yamato, the trans masculine character from Wano you mentioned, so his inclusion wasn't even a change in representation. It had been doing it for years.
    3) Sorry, amend that: Bon Klei from Baroque Works was an even earlier example from 2005 of a cannonically nonbinary, pansexual character in the series. Bon Klei was a villian but portrayed as the most sympathetic and likely to turn good...which they did during Impel Down where they made a heroic sacrifice to let Luffy escape. Cannoically, the only member of the organization to be allowed to use both male and female designations. Which makes sense since their leader, Crocodile, has hinted to be trans masculine since the magic HRT guy, Ivankov, hinted at having a secret about Crocodile that they'd never tell about a favor they did for him once. The live action series even accidentally hinted at this when Luffy's actor accidentally almost admited the female presenting audience member of Gol. D. Rodger's execution was Crocodile.
    4) Fuck, I could go back to race and discuss that for hours too. You can actually map the history of how mainstream media depicts racial strife through the evolving depiction of Fishmen because of how long the series has run. Fishman Island's arc was rough, but I really liked the struggle between Otohime's dream of changing the world through intergration and shared humanity versus Fish Tigher wanting to believe in that dream but knowing the institution of slavery exists and freeing slaves violently despite this hurting Otohime's goals because he couldn't ignore the suffering now for an imagined future. Or how Fischer Tiger was a broken man as a former slave since he was a hero for freeing all slaves regardless of race, including Boa Hancock who'd become an all of Luffy, but secrelty wrestling with a deep seeded hatred of mankind for what they did to him, once he actively supressed to help humans who were enslaved and to avoid spreading hate to the children. The worst part of Fishman Island is the best parts were flashbacks.
    5) The World Government is a standin for every government and every empire. The series potrayed them as evil. It doesn't portray all government as evil, but any government that doesn't listen to its people as evil. The world government promotes slavery, profits off the suffering of the poor, uses the military to supress free thought, and many other evils. On a smaller scale, the Drum Island arc has one of the heinous things that the villian did that was seen as reprehensible and evil was that he privated medicine. Like it's so on the nose.
Fuck, I can go on, but it's hilarious to me that he chose the one anime that would absolutely tick him off. Often the struggles and progressive messages in anime don't phase Americans and Europeans as they get censored out or they feature elements that aren't progressive for our current social issues. And this guy picked one of mainstream anime that made that a big factor of its worldbuilding. You can't make this up.

    • @thelordstarfish
      @thelordstarfish 8 месяцев назад +3

I will say that the trans representation pre-Yamato (or, pre-Kiku, rather) was, um... less than flattering, though. I mean it helps that Luffy clearly does not give a single damn about whether they "conform to gender norms" or whatever and just treats Bon-chan, Iva and the Kamabakka folks exactly the same as he would any other person, but, uh, the way Oda draws them is... heavily seeped in stereotypes and felt like it was playing them for jokes.
But yeah. One Piece? *Extremely* not even slightly aligned with "conservative values" like the main character *literally* has overthrown multiple tyrannical monarchs and allowed populist leaders to come and take said monarchs' place. (Though tbf in Dressrosa he kicked out the corrupt king so that the old, much nicer king could take over again... But in Drum Kingdom he literally kicked out the "rightful" king who was then replaced with a democratically elected leader loved by the people.)

I love your cheerful and intelligent delivery. It's like a really fun master class in how to argue a point. With great Doctor Who content of course. I learn a lot. My husband and I recently started watching Doctor Who. I absolutely love it. I didn't have a TV growing up and still don't; I buy the DVDs and watch on the computer. We've watched all of the 9th and 10th Doctors so far. The complete 11th Doctor series, Stories 1-3 from Series 1 of the 1st Doctor, and complete Series 1 of Baker are on order. If anyone has another DVD to recommend, let me know.
I hardly ever watch movies or shows, but this is the most imaginative, wonderful, and wacky thing ever. Definitely hooked. I'm also fascinated by its long history, constant evolution, and effect on so many people. And glad there's your channel here to explain stuff I need to know and defend the show.

I mean I purchase Doctor Who physically when I can to keep up with the series because there aren't any real other choices for viewing online other than BBC America (in the day) and now Disney+. If I could afford Crunchyroll and Disney+ together yes I would be watching it. Also if I had a more effective way of viewing Doctor Who during the Whittaker Era I would have been watching her as well. I liked her. Even if they aren't top-quality effects, it's better than a lot of the stuff from the early 2000s and sure as hell better than most of the stuff from the 1970s! Knowing these specials were made before the budget upping makes me even more impressed if anything, and incredibly excited for the effects quality in the full series. It is Luffy's father and brother who are revolutionaries but Luffy himself has admitted he doesn't care about that stuff. The World Government being his enemy is just part of being a pirate and the fact that they tend to hurt his friends, he's not fighting them for some revolutionary reason. I just watch the media now, maybe watch a review or two from a select few.

I can't tell you how pleasant and relaxing it is to watch a video, without needing to wonder when I'll hear someone squealing in self satisfaction for becoming the 9 billionth person to cleverly recite "go woke and go broke"(You know it's true because it rhymes). Because their day was ruined by the _existence_ of minorities, women, LGBTQ+, or heaven forbid someone thats all three, in a film or tv show they may or may not actually watch.
It really is just... *nice* to watch content that discusses popular media without any of that nonsense, and I realize there are A LOT of people out there that dedicate their every waking moment to opposing the so-called "woke agenda", but I'm starting to wonder if we're giving them too much attention. Engaging and arguing with them, as if their opinions had any merit. I don't know. I suppose we can't simply ignore that kind of BS since silence can be mistaken as complaisance, but it's not difficult to see that their side is losing. 😅I have to believe there's a better way to finally rid ourselves of these silly backwards ideas, but I'm just not smart enough to figure out what it is.

We think the same about you. Why are you people so easily accepting of things that in the long term degrade and splinter society. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but there are so many different factions of progressives arguing amongst each other simply because most of it is based entirely on group identities. Take TERFs for example. To a conservative, they're incredibly progressive in their overpromotion of women to the point of damaging men and heterosexual relationships. But to a progressive, their fatal flaw is excluding the transcommunity. This is, however, understandable, because if you're an insufferable feminist, you clearly see how men in dresses are invading women's spaces. Most normal women also feel at least somewhat uneasy about that. Have I sketched a good enough picture of how more and more division is created? This doesn't happen because gays and transpeople exist, no, they've been around for a while. The issue is overpromotion, pandering, acceptance of new or alternative definitions without question or critical thinking. By that I mean that gays, lesbians, bisexuals, asexuals, intersex and "binary" transpeople (those who permanently switch from one side of the binary to the other) are completely fine, but LGBTQIA+ as a "community" and propagandamachine with their [random word]-sexuals and [random word]-genders and "genderreassignment" surgery for minors, who don't know the first thing about life are a serious danger. When it comes to race, similar story, there is no issue with a random occasional immigrant who would love to live in your country and integrate into the native culture of said country, but that doesn't happen. There's a huge influx of non-integrating immigrants who don't care where they are as long as they get money, either through jobs or for free. What happens is more crime over time and muddying of the native culture until eventually there's nothing left of it.

TNG even had a line about how revolutionary movements used a violent uprising to overthrow oppressive and colonial governments. Then you had the episode in the last season about a Native American tribe being forcefully relocated.
I honestly struggle to think of anything that wasn't progressive in Star Trek throughout it's history.
I just can't take these anti-SJW's seriously because they lie so brazenly, or they just admit they can't think critically.

It's actually more accurate to call Yamato androgynous or gender non-conforming than trans. The cultural and societal norms surrounding gender non-conformity in Japan are very different from what they are in the West, and you should try to avoid viewing LGBT characters in Japanese media through your Western perspective because often it will not align with the perspective of the author. This is likely one of the reasons why Oda has avoided commenting on the subject one way or the other, because he knows that he won't be able to give an answer that won't piss off both pro and anti-LGBT Westerners.
