      The bell and deck-plate should have been retrieved; given the net debris down there the bell will now almost certainly be dragged off the site or lost.
      HMS Royal Oak and HMS Hood are good precedents. Nobody thought it was remotely immoral to recover and memorialise such key artefacts.

    21:00 Middle - bottom : Why does this looks like a shoe sole ? It can't have survived this long. Anyone has an idea what it is ? We see it again at 21:16 and it really stands out.
    On another topic, filming in adrenaline-high environments make for strange results sometimes. Don't sweat it, it's already incredibly gracious of you to be sharing all of this with us :)
    About the bell...I have the conviction the lost sailors would rather see it saved and visible rather than sitting deep, alone. As it is the case with this video you share, this bell is a testimony that these men lived, and died far from home.
    Cheers.

    Fantastic! Perfect conditions too - 10c seems warm, I thought it would be colder. I've dived on a few wrecks here in NZ, the best one was The Rainbow Warrior - the Greenpeace ship that the frogs sunk in Auckland harbour in 85 I think it was. She was refloated and moved 250 odd km to the far north of NZ and sunk as a monument/reef in Matauri Bay just off the Cavalli Islands and we sailed up there and tied up to her navy buoy about a year after the sinking when everything was still intact. She lies in 25m and its nice and warm but the sea was full of fish eggs so the viz was crap. Even the wooden decks were still there and all the doors removed so you can go inside but I only went in the wheel house and then a funny thing happened; as I was looking forward through the window I saw some very sinister shapes moving rhythmically towards me thru the murk - reminded me of the Alien surrounded by a cloud of stirred up silt - then it got closer and I almost blew the reg out when I saw that it was two divers doing the tango down the deck towards me! They must have arrived while we were down so that was unexpected and for a moment it looked like I would have to disinfect my suit..The coolest thing by far tho was that the ship has a slight list and the port side is facing north (where the sun is here) and catching the sun and I discovered that the whole side of the ship is covered in bands of different coloured anemone in a natural rainbow! I hung there for ages in awe and almost became religious...Take care down there mate! Love your site - Kia Ora from Aotearoa Peace

    Big respect for a very ballsy dive,
    personally I believe that the bell, subject to Admiralty AND Relatives approval AND replacement by a suitable and respectful plaque AND displayed in a suitable museum setting is ok, eg, HMS Hood,
    just because it was an accident does not lessen the fact that these brave souls still served and stood by to do their duty to the bitter end.

    Spectacular dive- I remember when a dive to half that depth was considered pretty technical dive but the new tech is amazing. My vote is recover the bell... put it in a museum with ohotos of the wreck along with the plans and it’s history- if available a ships roster at the time this ship went down - would give them back there names and history. I was surprised how bad a shake this wreck was- is it battle damage, time or destruction from all the drag nets slowly pulling her apart ?

    So _finally_ you accept something is ‘passably deep’ … not to mention remote 😉 Great to see the trapezes in place and additional air on station. Must help _hugely_ in holding deco depth for so long. 2.5 hours deco means close-on 3h in the water, and not terribly warm water at that. Do you get much tidal flow there, maybe explaining the clearer conditions, or are you far enough away from ‘everything’ to not see too much flow? A quite amazing dive … and the first ever recorded on the wreck. Quite a first, and an even better record of it to come back with. I think I’m going to need a bigger hat to take off at this rate for you and your co-divers 😊

    • @D33pUK
      @D33pUK  2 месяца назад +1

      @iainhunneybell I think it's important to teach all these dives with respect even though that may not always come across in my videos 🤣 We always have strict plans for keeping together during deco and supplying additional gas although the exact mechanics may vary!
      There are strong currents but I think the clarity is because it is so far away from any significant land, and particularly rivers, combined with a decent clean sand bottom

    Hello, I don't know you've noticed. But next to the bell at timestamp 11:41 there is a remnant of equipment on the right side of the bell.
    It appears to be part of the radio equipment from the radio room.
    I've zoomed in on it and there's definitely a control dial. As well as some copper wire with braided cloth on it and what appears to be conduit and additional components scattered around it.
    I could be mistaken but it might be a radio component.
    Sincerely a fan from Texas. 🤠

HMS Negro was a M class destroyer launched May 8th 1916 and was sunk in a collision with HMS Hoste which was also lost from the collision.

    Amazing video and experience. I recently was certified on Helitrox to 50M and curious to know if you are running a line back to the shot line while you are navigating the ship. I saw what looked like one when you were photographing the bell, but you also mentioned lots of line and netting tangled. Just curious if you are you navigating around the wreck and using the layout (along with the strobe) to make it back to the shot line for ascent or running a line or anything else? If the conditions had been worse (low visibility, high current) would that process have been different?

    • @D33pUK
      @D33pUK  2 месяца назад +1

      Well done on getting your helitrox. It's relatively unusual for us to use distance lines on the bottom as we're all pretty adept at navigating ourselves around wrecks but we do carry/use them when vis is very poor. Deep diving in strong currents is not a good idea due the build up of CO2 caused by working hard so we spend a lot of time ensuring we dive on slack.

      The price for this will be decompression time, and it will take not hours, but days!
      For example, for deep sea commercial (saturation) divers, decompression time can take weeks, depending on the depth. Again, unlike technical divers, commercial divers spend their decompression time not in the water, but on board the ship inside pressure chamber where their have beds, hot meals, toilet and even shower.

    This is not a criticism, but both the bell and the deck-plate should have been recovered - or should now be recovered with some urgency - as the evidence of nets on the wreck indicates that the bell may now well be moved and/or lost.
    Royal Oak's bell was saved, as was Hoods, and as I didn't even know there was an HMS Negro, it's apparent that the ship's lost could now be commemorated and remembered if those objects formed a publicly visible shrine.
    It is not disrespectful to recover and henceforth glorify items which exemplify great sacrifice in time of war.

      Thanks for getting back to me. Having served 22 years in the RN, I agree with your take on the navy's rather unimpressive record on historical recognition, particularly of the smaller warships. I researched 20th century mutinies and was told there were possibly two of note. I actually found more than a dozen.
      Couple of things...
      I know of very few visible public recognitions of lost destroyers. In my opinion, the recovery of the bell would justify itself precisely because it is precariously sited, and its gift to a museum would create such recognition. Such a gift would also ensure it was never sold privately.
      Her links with Scapa would almost certainly guarantee that the regional museums up there would welcome the bell and undertake its restoration. More so, if it were handed over with some still photos.
      The name itself may cause some official reticence about recovery, however it should be noted the term is simply Portuguese for the colour 'black.'
      Many of her crew were saved, and I highly doubt they would want their shipmates to stay unknown and forgotten.
      That said, you are to be commended for your professionalism and respectful approach. Some would have felt entitled to take such artefacts and make gain from them, simply as an offset for the risks taken.
      Nice job.
