  • As the law finally closes in on Connie Nikas, we are left with an unforgettable barred portrait shot that truly encapsulates the best performance of this year in my opinion by Robert Pattinson.

    The whole time I was watching the movie I thought Connie was going to get away with it. He seemed to have made all the right moves up until his arrest, but then it hit me that this is how life really is. Crooks hardly ever get away with their crimes, there’s a one or two day manhunt and then it’s over. They fuck up. Who was I to think they would win? Life is almost never like that. That’s what the stare in the back of the police car meant to me. This was the realist movie I’ve seen in a long time.

      According to Wikipedia, the clearance rate for bank robberies is 60% (the highest of any crime), as the perpetrators are often caught within one to two days of the robbery. You have to be a genius to get in and out before the cops arrive (which they do _very_ quickly if you're in an urban area, plus most robberies are reported on as they're going on) without getting IDed by a witness or a CCTV camera. To Connie's credit, his scheme was pretty clever and he was able to exit the building before the police were called, but it didn't do him much good in the end. Even if you're a genius, the odds are stacked against you regardless of how well-prepared you are. _Good Time_ is nothing if not realistic.

      Just like uncut gems. Theres no way those goons were gonna let howie win and have his happy ending. So even though he couldve paid arno back and then some in the end, the goons were like, "no, you don't get to win over a mil and just walk away after everything." And seeing him win was too much to take for Phil. So he just said fuck it and killed howie then he even killed the guy he worked for. In real life there are no storybook endings. Its a cold world and greed is what controls most people. So if it takes having to kill 2 people and cleaning out the jewelry store to not let howie win and walk away with his happy ending, then that's what he's gonna do. Its all about jealousy and greed. In the end loyalty to arno didn't matter, because if Phil couldn't win fairly, hes just gonna do what he has to do to win by saying fuck the rules and killing howie and arno then taking everything that was left to take. Realism. I love that about the Safdie brothers.

      A little late to the party, but for me it was the slow reveal that he chugged a bunch of lsd (his eyes), before getting taken in. So in the end he wasn't even really planning on escaping.
      He decided to have a good time as a vegetable and his brother will now be released and everything will be pinned on him.
      Also as you realize that he's now a vegetable they cut to his brother drawing a connection between them and how Connie can connect with him now. And you get to realize that the last time he got see him was back when he left him in the mall.
      It was a suicide in a sense.

    • @thawedantarctican2171

      Well...
      It was honestly half and half.
      Connie does care about Nick, don't get me wrong, but Connie is shown to have a record (manhunt news update) and had to keep walking Nick through the process just so the robbery went smooth (for the time being that is).
      He justified to Nick reasons why he didn't need therapy (which he clearly needs), that their Grandmother is abusive (which she is shown NOT to be and that it's the other way around), and that they will get away from the city (which they clearly wouldn't in the long run realistically).
      Connie cares about his brother, still, but he also uses him as a tool to get what he wants through manipulation on Nick's part, since Nick believes his brother is looking out for him when that's only half right and mainly is trying to influence him and hold it over his head.
      In the end, Connie is looking out for himself. He is a sociopath, no doubt about it. Look at Corey and their 'relationship' as another example of that. It was only after Ray's death and his arrest did he finally get an iota of the ruination he has caused, and it was sparked by his brother's arrest.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen 4 года назад +50

      the thing about it is that he doesn't really love his brother all that much, or really care about his overall well being. If he actually cared, he wouldn't have gotten in into a bank robbery or tried to get him out of "jail" because he's mentally handicapped, he's not in full control of actions or really know what he's doing for the most part.
      If he really cared, he would have left his brother alone to actually care and well being with society's benefits, NOT drag him along this life of crime and vice.

    • @thawedantarctican2171
      @thawedantarctican2171 4 года назад +99

      @@Gadget-Walkmen I personally feel the same. He definately cares, but the fact he KNOWINGLY involved his clearly disabled brother in a BANK ROBBERY shows his true motives. He could've easily turned himself in and saved Nick from the horrendous beatings he took as part of a plea deal, but he still wanted the money.
      He told Nick they were going to Virginia for hellsake, to live on a farm! In what reality would they REALLY make it far with the amount stolen for a farm?
      He didn't just take advantage of his brother, he hustled him.

    One thing this scene does beautifully is switch perspectives - you don’t notice it as you’re watching it right away since you’re so immersed in the story, but you watch Connie’s arrest from Ray above, and you see Ray’s fall (and assumed death) from down below. Most other films would’ve tried to heighten the tension by keeping the camera on the action, but this film packs a way more powerful punch by letting the audience experience it as a spectator

      Connie ultimately accomplished keeping his brother safe at the cost of putting himself in prison where he belongs.
      It's no stretch of the imagination that Connie has no friends. He is a shit person who roped his disabled brother into a world of trouble, along with everybody else he dragged out, stretched thin, manipulated, assaulted and even (in a way) killed.
      That shot in the back of the police car is Connie realizing how much pain he has caused, and realizing that he should be locked away from everyone because he knows now just how bad of a person he is. He's the bad ingredient. So off screen, he pleaded guilty to all of his crimes, and also made sure his brother is properly taken care of.
      Which brings us to his brothers therapist explaining, "what your brother did was a very good thing".

      I kinda took the ending to mean that the whole time nick was better off without his brother. He was never going to be in trouble for the robbery, he was going to get the care he needed and be taken away from his manipulative older brother. Connie only wanted to break him out to save his own skin, because his brother was a loose end from the robbery and could turn on him.

    • @YellowToothedSpaz
      @YellowToothedSpaz 2 года назад +28

      I think the ending goes back to one very quick line at the beginning of the film where Connie says "You think you're like them?" when Nick spots a retarded guy.
      Because of Connie's manipulation and love for his brother, nick believes that he shouldn't be there and doesn't think anything is wrong with him. So Nick is spending the rest of his life going to these classes, but he'll be thinking about Connie as he's the only person who wouldn't let him do stuff like that.
      The way the scene is presented also feels like it's patronising these people by treating them like idiots. Compare how Connie treated Nick at the beginning (even if it was manipulation) to how the woman in the class treated all of them, there's a huge difference. I'd say it's commentary, but i'm not smart enough mentally or politically to really confirm that for myself.
      No matter how you look at it, it's an extremely powerful ending and the safdie brothers are incredible.

    I’ve yet to see another movie that just immaculately nails every aspect of fear, anxiety, and horror up to this mark involving:
    an unstable yet ominous anxiety driven tension ambient, and riveting frenetic energy that really nails it with a climactic crescendo like this, 0:26 at this point I can only imagine Connie has his eyes on that wide open gate (paving the way to his self prophetic mythological dreams of freedom and his brother hopefully) yet he is chased back and circled around into a gated corner like the stubborn yet lovable dog he identifies as earlier on in the film. It’s a personally familiar feeling and expression at the end that Pattinson flawlessly evokes throughout despite the countless lives he’s previously ruined and more. Was it worth the white knuckling experience? yes.

You can tell that he's having a major eye-opening moment, a life-altering moment, a major pivot point in his perception, an existential epiphany. It's like all the suppressed stuff, all the stuff he tried to dodge and ignore about his own faults, it all comes welling up from the depths in some kind of cosmic operatic grandeur of painful understanding (thanks in no small part to the sublime score by OPN). Connie has nowhere left to run or hide, he's forced to sit and really THINK and SEE. He is seeing the Big Picture, some kind of higher truth about life. You can see the profound change happening within the character.

      Ray watched connie get arested from above, as he tripped trying to escape the maze in which he spiralled into,while connie watched ray from below as he tripped trying to walk on the edge from chasing that high, i think it really shows how the 2 characters we're polar opposites of one another in some regards but nontheless victims to their own bad decisions

    Shit got real for Connie I think when he heard the thump from Ray falling. The whole movie he’s been reacting to everything happening to him trying to find a way out or a solution in his own world, in his head, but when he hears Ray screaming his final scream, he realizes there’s no way out anymore. He’s handcuffed and getting his head pushed into a cop car and everything he thought he might have been able to resolve comes to a halt and he starts taking everything. It’s all his fault. From his brother condition to rays death and everything in between. The look in his eyes are ones of that confronting ones demons. No more running fir Connie, he’s face to face with himself and he’s petrified at what he’s become.

    This is literally done perfect. I cant even find words to describe how freakin good this scene is on top we also have daniel lopatin doing the sound track, that guy knows how to convay an emotion, that with the lighting in this movie alone is something beyond amazing. The acting is spot on and the story line is very very believable

    I don’t think the look of regret is from indirectly killing Ray. I believe it’s from him reflecting on how destructive he is, and the harm he has and would’ve done to his brother. If you read Connies backstory, you also know this is the part when he realizes he was wrong in his belief.

    The directors actually wanted to MAKE something, and it shows. They did not wash and reuse like 90% of Hollywood.
    Side note: I'm fine with Pattinson being Batman (he's shown he has range), but we need directors like this to make a new knight. Otherwise it is going to be more "let's get more big actors in the universe" shit.

    Pattinson has worked well in searching for movie roles and filmakers that could expand and express his acting abbilities like cronenberg and the Safdie brothers. A lot of respect to this man because it was risky to his career too..
