CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) discusses one of his favorite songs from Huey Lewis & the News, and then murders Paul Allen (Jared Leto) with an axe.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Bret Easton Ellis's dark and violent satire of America in the 1980s is brought to the screen in this unsettling drama with blackly comic overtones. Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), the son of a wealthy Wall Street financier, is pursuing his own lucrative career with his father's firm. Bateman is the prototypical yuppie, obsessed with success, fashion, and style. He is also a serial killer who murders, rapes, and mutilates both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or reason. Donald Kimble (Willem Dafoe), a police detective, questions Bateman about the disappearance of Paul Allen (Jared Leto), whom Patrick murdered several days earlier. As Kimble stays on Bateman's trail, Bateman's mask of studied, distant cool begins to fall apart. American Psycho also features Reese Witherspoon as Bateman's girlfriend, as well as Samantha Mathis, Chloe Sevigny, and Guinevere Turner; the latter also co-authored the screenplay. Controversy followed the production from the start, when speculation that Leonardo Di Caprio would play Bateman sparked concerns that he would lure preteens to an R-rated movie. Di Caprio soon bowed out of the project, and original leading man Bale was reinstated. Later, a group of Toronto residents attempted to block filming in that city after Canadian serial killer Paul Bernardo claimed that Ellis's novel inspired his murder spree.

Patrick Bateman hitting Paul with an axe is a subtle hint he doesn't like him. Amazing directing.
Thats the moment that bateman turns into the american psycho
Oh really? No way
This is the moment when Bateman became Marcus Halberstram
You can tell by the way the axe just glistens and shines while resting elegantly upon the floor that you will die in style. The solid light birch handle gives it the perfect balance of style, sophistication, and masculinity while maintaining its function as a tool to tame the harshest of wildernesses. Empires have been built and destroyed with pieces like this.
I know right? Honestly quite incredible.
This scene is - by far - still the funniest, yet most unnerving murder scene that wasn’t passed off as cringey or gimmicky in film history. Bale is a fantastic actor

Paul is blasted out of his mind so he kinda has to.
Well Paul may have been drunk, lol
Bateman drugged his drink
this is one form of psychopath manipulation( the most common ).
Patrick had to ingratiate himself so as not to arouse suspicion. Namely, he introduced himself as a caring and friendly person (of course he is not).
Yeah, if you do not take it in context, it looks pretty sweet.
Aren't all drunk people like children?
Bale was so committed to this role that he actually murdered Jared Leto's stunt double in this scene

@@antonchigurh4305 which is way more accurate than dying after one hit
@@antonchigurh4305 and that's tame compared to most other kills in the book
The book is so much worse... I read it in highschool before the movie's release. The book's content resulted in my avoidance of the movie for a looooong time even though gore, violence, etc. had little impact on me in those days. I loved reading disturbing horror (still do, especially Junji Ito) and could handle blood, guts, and violence in film or television (now it depends on context). Yet despite my strong stomach this book made me feel *deeply* uncomfortable. The torture/death scenes were *beyond* disturbing and I _did not_ want to see them onscreen.
Eventually I realized certain parts of the book couldn't be in a movie with an "R" rating, even considering America's comfort with gratuitous violence (no offense intended: I'm 'Merican myself).
When I watched the movie I found it to be surprisingly hilarious! The onscreen violence and disturbing moments were nothin' compared to countless passages in the book (the sewer rat scene, the chainsaw torture while the woman stays conscious, cannibalism, the car battery hooked up to Christine, necrophilia... there's a lot more but I'll stop here).
Bale was *amazing* in the film: menacing and funny at the same time, and also able to switch between the two in an instant. I'm glad his role wasn't written _or_ performed so he'd simply be a live version of the book's Bateman.

I think it’s universally accepted that Bale is a generational level actor, but when I heard that he ad-libbed that incredibly perfect goofy dance move into the scene.. I was just blown away. First off, try doing it in the mirror. Quick fact: You can’t. You’ll be able to do the motion, but it will look clunky. This guy just came outta nowhere with this and did it flawless lol. So perfect to the character too
Something tells me he probably has done this dance while making snacks in the kitchen or doing various tasks around the house.
Funny enough, Bale's moonwalking impro was the only thing that Bret Easton Ellis, the novel's writer disliked about the movie and Bale's portrayal (but even he admitted later that he's grown fond of it over time).
Christian Bale and Sean Penn, #1 and #1.5, rest of the so called actors come a billion leagues below. The worst of all time who comes another 500 trillion leagues below is Keanu Reeves

Just realised that when Patrick is doing his monologue about the song he says: "a song so catchy most people probably don't even listen to the lyrics, but they should!" and that's Patrick's whole character and plot of the movie in a nutshell, a guy so charming on the surface that people dismiss all the noticeable hints that he's a murderous sociopath.
wow! never thought of that ! Brilliant observation.

2:00 The aboutface from right to left was an absolutely brilliant subtle display of directing and positioning for Bateman's duality. How one side is fresh and clean, and how the other side is drenched in blood.
That was actually completely accidental, they had very limited shots for the blood spray scene and it happened to just cover one half of his face

@@liavhanegbi2729 IT WAS REVEALED TO ME IN A DREAM
My headcanon is that Patrick hadn't fully decided to kill Paul yet until that little face he made at 0:08. Like "Oh just OKAY? JUST OKAY? That's it, mister, you just lost your living privileges"
I understood that reference
Then you're wrong
I think Paul was doomed the moment he set foot in Patrick's apartment, but it's an interesting reading. The novel plays a lot more with Patrick's emotional lability, his inappropriate emotional reactions in various situations. The film really highlights this in the business card scene, when he is profoundly unsettled by Paul Allen's card. In the book there are many more examples and his emotions run the gamut from anger to terror. So it would be in character for him to kill someone for thinking Huey Lewis and the News is only okay.
@@Monsposse Except he never actually killed anyone. It was all in his head.

Christian Bale has just incredible charm even when he plays psychotic murderer 😅💪🏿.
I love it how he does critique on 80s music before each kill.
Or threesome...
Well the setting of the movie and book take place in the 1980s during the Wall Street boom. Movie takes place in 1988.
The writer of the book used to do music reviews, so it was his way of inserting those bits from his past work in there.
i like it better in the book, where the reviews are completely seperate from the killings.

I love the symbolism in this scene. The red on Bateman's face is supposed to symbolize his bloodlust. Genius.
Truly genius.
It's morbin time
Also it is framed so that it at first looks like his entire face is covered in blood. But then, he turns around, sits down, and we see that the left side of his face almost clean. The symbolism is (almost) too obvious.
I read that as “Batman”
The axe is also meant to represent his desire to murder Paul Allen with an axe
I like how bale sounds like a commenter in the news report or in a science fair before killing paul

In the book Bateman sometimes straight up mentions to his colleges that he murdered people, but they're so self absorbed that they don't even register what he's saying. Christian Bale was channeling his inner Jim Carrey
Yeah gets him drunk and unaware because of his jealousy. Hehe it’s like Patrick is killing a more pathetic version of himself 😅
Do you like Ice Nine Kills? Their early work was a little bit too "scene" for me, but when _The Silver Scream_ came out, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a refined melodic sensibility that really makes it a cut above the rest. HEY PAUL!
“To hell with good intentions… to hell is where I’ll go. But the devil makes exceptions, for all American Psychos!”
Do you like Make Them Suffer? Their earlier work was a little too extreme deathcore in my personal opinion, but when Booka Nile and Alex Reade joined the band, I think they really came into their own. The subsequent songs with those two have more of a revamped metalcore foundation that delivers a major dose of melody and brutality that is perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

Or is it how Bale felt towards Leto's Paul Allen role? E.g. 1:01 feels so genuine. Even Leto seems like he's not acting for a moment afterwards.

He was such an terrible Joker that Batman had to break his one rule out of embarrassment.
I know this has probably been said a billion times here, but what makes Christian Bale's performance so memorable to me is how QUICKLY he goes from abject rage or terror or fear to just... Nothing. So many times in this movie his entire demeanor changes in a split second. That has to be one of the most challenging things for an actor to do.
I wonder what medication he took in this scene
Christian Bale played Joker, Two-Face and the Mask in one scene. It’s like he Never though he was Gonna play Batman.
The guy's name is bateman
Don't forget ace Ventura
Maybe that was the reason he could play batman so well. Joker makes a point in a lot of stories that batman is really just like him in a lot of ways
He's the villain that lived long enough to become the hero.
😁😂😂
This is one of the most violent murders I’ve ever seen in a movie, and there’s not really any gore. It’s all in the build up and the “execution” (sorry, pun alert) but the way he’s explaining the reasons he likes “fore!” And “hip to be square” because it’s got a layered cynical commentary in it while smiling and putting his raincoat on is purely psychotic. The screamed lines as he hits him with the axe is just another example of why Christian bale is one of the best actors of all time. Oh and the little twist he does when he says “hip to be square” just completely makes it.
I read this in Bateman's voice
Seriously people could learn a lot from this movie, it's not about the destination but the journey, my heart was beating out of my chest the whole time but we barely see a thing and we didn't need to, and the build up was just unreal
The film is really brilliant, even if I would complain that it falsifies the core message of the book. Bale is still a genius and a great Patrick Bateman.

For me the scariest part of this scene is after he kills Allen and takes off the raincoat, sits down, adjusts his hair and smokes his cigar.
