As a non English fan, your main issue is Gareth. You have the squad, but lack a plan B, C or D. Gareth runs the side like a lower table team not wanting to lose, when in reality in Tournament football, you need to take risks

Part of the problem with England is the media praising them for inept performances. Alan Shearer praising them this morning is a joke and being applauded on the front of some newspapers is an embarrassment. Call their performances out for what they were boring and negative.

First ten seconds of the game…England kick off, we’re half way up the pitch and play it back to Pickford who then lumps it up giving it straight to Spain. That is a training ground rehearsed move and tells you all you need to know about Southgate
just saw a clip on twitter of 75th minute - A throw in on the edge of Spains box and Walker chooses to throw the ball all the way back to Stones, who passess to Pickford and Pickford lobs it up the pitch and we lose possession. 🤦 outrageous

Yes you would have thought that he would throw the ball around the penalty area like in a corner kick and let the forwards deal with it. At least we would have some chance. But no he preferred to do like their usual passes going sideways and backward. What kind of stupid play is that. I bet those BBC and ITV presenters won't say anything about that. Kane was nowhere in the game. Right from start they should be high on press up and not when Spain scores first. Also did you see any challenge from the defenders about those two goals. They should have at least run and block those shots. Only Micah on the BBC panel voiced about that as sloppy defending. No one else. Playing in a final of such importance and they threw it away. It’s amazing Cucurella played about half of Chelsea’s game was often criticised and many said he was a waste of money, but turns out for Spain and plays very well, meanwhile some of the England players underperformed.

Pedri lost to injury for the rest of the tournament thanks to Kroos. Rodri getting hurt in the final. A camera man clattering into Morata's knee after the semis. Spain had Germany, France, Portugal and Belgium on their side of the bracket while England got a free pass to the final....again. Doesn't sound like luck to me. Spain dominated and controlled every game they played in.

Not just Southgate but Kane should retire from international football, he’s a liability. The team are practically playing with 10 men when he’s on the pitch.
Kane is most affective getting the ball into feet with players running off him (eg Bayern) not having 70 yard long balls constantly pumped at him by mad dog Pickford.

The manager has his favourite players, and will continue to select and play them regardless of what form they are in. Certain players have been appalling every single game, and it’s down to the manager to make changes and give others an opportunity. We’ve lots of inform players on the bench, Palmer, Watkins, Gordon, Bowen, Trent etc who could’ve offered so much more given the chance.
Absolutely this. Southgate’s weakness apart from inclination to be risk averse, is his loyalty to players. You’re only as good as your last game.

The level of delusion is incredible. England players aren't technically good enough. Rice gives the ball away constantly. Rodri's stand in, who most England fans have never heard of, comes in and bosses the midfield. It's clear that England players just aren't good enough. Spain pass the ball a million times better than any England player and until you can pass a ball you aren't winning anything in modern football.

SouthGOAT has been their most successful manager since the 60's BY FAR, and this will only be recognised in 5-10 years time when they go back to the same old and get destroyed by any decent team. We still might not have been good enough with more attacking tactics but we would have stood a much better chance by playing to our strengths. A lot of this defeat is on Southgate.
It’s weird because you look at the players he took and it’s obvious that we needed to play all out attacking, direct football. It was a team full of players who want to score (besides Kane, who seems to want to flop about in midfield like a three legged donkey).

Worst part is, it's not even an excellent Spain team. This isn't Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Torres, Busquets, Pique, Casillas. This Spain team is good, but the plain fact is that Portugal, Holland, Germany, France, England were all sub-standard. There were literally 0 stars in this tournament, and that's reflected by the fact that Harry Kane (who played awfully at the top of a team playing awfully) finished as joint top scorer. ANY English manager from league one upwards could have got to this final with this group. I'm convinced that most of them would have won it. Southgates tactics, formations, lineups and subs where all from a clueless man. He was just throwing stuff on the pitch in some games. Players playing in multiple positions in a single game, and lets ace it, he was done, we were out against Slovakia until Bellingham produced a moment of magic out of the blue. He had only made 1 sub at that point! Same against denmark but this time saka. We got a non penalty given to keep us alive vs the average dutch. Southgates strategy was - Hope the other team plays rubbish and gets no luck and that someone scores a worldie from nowhere.

I don't consider myself an expert on Football merely a casual fan, however what I have noticed is that the dilema of England not winning any major international event such as the World Cup or Euros has been the situation since Alf Ramsey and 1966. Perhaps it has something to do with the managers selected by the FA for the job. Ramsey for example was apparently a tough disciplinarian and a strong willed individual who eventually fell out with the FA as did Terry Venables. Southgate to be fair has got close but not close enough with arguabaly the best squad of players England has produced. Many believe that winning a tournament where you only have one chance and can't come back next week is something that even some good Premier League managers find difficult e.g. Roy Hodgson. I don't know enough to know why England fail to achieve but I would suggest the FA (if they are capable) look into this with some application e.g. a commitee of unbiased experts and come to some honest conclusion that will help to resolve the issue. England fans deserve this.

Southgate has had the best squad of players in the tournament and he has failed again. Time to get strong and get someone in who has actually won something as a manager. My main issue is that the President of the Football Association is Prince William, based on him being born into a certain family. The FA need a restructure from top to bottom. As soon as England kicked off and they passed straight back to Pickford I knew what type of game it was going to be.
I don't understand why with a group of players like this we are unable to play possession football and dominate teams like Spain....or at least get the possession stat closer to 50-50.
The 2nd Spain goal was building for 5-10 mins and the only player I could see shouting push up was Pickford.
I think Southgate would be a good manager for weaker tournament team. His tactics make it hard to score against his team.

Typical garbage take. SouthGOAT has been your most successful manager since the 60's. You aren't 1970's Brazil or anywhere near that quality. You could have the 'best manager in the world' and Spain would still have pumped you rotten last night, probably worse because at least Gareth knows the players inside out and knows how sh1te they actually are, so he tactically adapts to cover up the sh1teness as much as possible, whereas a 'better' manager would try more 'ambitious' tactics that would completely expose the sh1teness and enhance it. This has been proven time and time again with England over the years, different players, different managers - same results. Until SouthGOAT got to 2 finals.

An average Germany is the best opponent we have beaten in any knock out game with Southgate, we have been very lucky to get as far as we have and ultimately been beaten every time by a nation arguably better than us like France, Italy and Spain. And this is exactly the problem all through the tournament England only showed any teeth (attack) when they went behind and looked good doing it but as soon as England drew level again it went back to a very negative defensive line, too many times did England get lucky and managed to pull a deficit back, Against Spain as you quoted the luck run out, The bottom line is that England squad is capable to put away any international side but they have been hindered and by a very poor manager that is adverse to letting the reigns go and allowing the players to actually play and perform, Bad tactics and very bad 1970's play style the long balls were a joke with the quality this squad has, Southgate is out of his depth and would not be a success in the EFL let alone the Premiership.

England has a lot of great players, look at Spain they won the tournament without having better players because they work as a team. England needs someone who can teach them to play as a team regardless of who plays.

To answer Simon Jordan's question "Why are they excelling in their sides domestically but not internationally". That answer is very simple - because Foden for example is surrounded by players like Rodri, Haaland, De Bruyne, Alvaraz, Bernardo Silva - i.e not English players.
Grassroot football in England is not good.
And yet at Man City he is the equal of any of them. Good managers make teams better than the sum of their parts. Poor managers like Southgate make teams less. If Southgate swapped out Foden for Rodri, De Bruyne or De Silva they'd look just as bad.

To your point. I’ve not watched much if Bellingham so just heard the hype. Thought I was going to see a top class player but he was so disappointing. Ok overhead kick to save their bacon against Slovakia but that would hardly merit a title of world class. Totally over hyped like the rest of them. Not their fault, it’s the English media but they and the pundits seem to buy into it. I wouldn’t replace any of the Spanish, German, Croatian, Portuguese or French players with English. If I think back to Southgate's truly great performances as England manager then the only match that springs to mind is the 3-2 vs Spain in the Nations League a few years ago.
If I apply the same thinking to Sven Goran Eriksson then my mind goes to the 5-1 vs Germany in Munich and the 1-0 vs Argentina at the '02 world cup.
So Sven - a manager much maligned - has twice as many brilliant managerial performances than the much-hailed Gareth.
So what conclusions can we draw? Well it's simple. Southgate has profited from some hugely fortunate draws and that they paper over the cracks.
Southgate wouldn't have gotten anywhere in Sven's era. Back then, national teams were stacked. You had Portugal with Figo, Ronaldo, Rui Costa, Pauleta, Ricardo Carvalho and Deco. That's who Sven lost to, and there's no shame in that. (Twice.)
He also went out to a Brazil of Ronaldo/Ronaldinho/Rivaldo. Again, no shame, and no way Southgate gets passed them either. This is probably the worst period in international footballing history, and only Argentina will be a side remembered in fifty years or so.

The problem is the narrative around Kane. He plays poor but the media have been told to make an excuse that he must be injured. Stop the propaganda about Kane and tell the world how rubbish he really is.
Kane was unfit and lethargic a lot of the time. Players on the wings ready to cross but Kane was outside penalty box. Should have played Watkins from the start.
Why do u say he was unfit ? Was there a confirmed injury (rumours about a back injury are just that , rumours ). Was he tired ? Rodri played more games , was he tired ?
I wouldn't say there was that many crossing opportunities and those that did go in weren't great. I wouldn't be too hard on Kane. Southgate plays containment football whereby we hardly create any chances and instead rely on "moments" to bale us out.

Nearly every Spanish player is superior in ball handling skills when it matters … it matters when the pace goes up ( England hard,y can up the pace anyway ) or when it becomes more risky ( vertical passing ). Can’t remember Rice given a vertical quality pass . Rodri does it with his eyes closed .

I disagree with most comments here, at least to a point. Southgate is part of the problem but is not the problem.
The way I see it England has the same problem Spain had until 2008. Lack of self belief. Sure, they'll go around saying "we're going to win", but when push comes to shove, they really don't believe it and it shows. Yesterday game was a good instance of that. When they scored the 1-1 they had the initiative, momentum was on their side. A team that believes in victory, smells blood at that point, and keeps on pushing.
England backed off. Spain pushed forward, because they believed they were the better team, they believed they could win on aggregate. Not on ET, not on Penalties, but then an there.
And Spain won.
Now change the scenario, imagine that instead of England what we had in front of us was 2022's Argentina (another team that's a testament of a team that believes they have what it takes to win), and you give Argentina the momentum England had after equalizing. They'd steamrolled Spain. Not saying they'd won - maybe not, maybe Spain would've had a counter like the one in the 2nd goal, but they'd gone all in. Not all the way back to defend. You only do the latter when you don't really believe in yourself.
Sorry guys, you say you are going to win, you say you believe you're going to win, but when the going gets rough all you think about is not losing. And a team that goes out of it's way to not lose a game, ends up never winning it.
Southgate might have had the wrong tactical calls. Maybe he placed his bets on the wrong players, but I'm telling you, without self belief England won't win anything.
The same Spain never did until 2008, when finally there was manager who not only thought we could win, not only told the players they could win...he made them BELIEVE IT. Not by talking, by showing it to the players, by making decisions based on that belief no matter how daring, or even how hard those decisions were, so the players would end up believing it too.
Spain went on to win 2 Euros and a WC after that. And to change the national team's mentality forever. There's no 2024 win without 2008,2010 and 2012. We'd still be thinking that we can't get past the quarter finals....just as you guys think you can win no silverware. You say you do. But internally, you don't. Your manager doesn't either. And the players, of course, don't either.
Unless that changes, you won't win anything. At all. Hanging on to a 1966 WC as credentials to win anything won't do jackshit. Past victories don't win games. Present ones do, and present ones hang on your belief that you can win.
Should Southgate go?. I'm in no position to be a judge of that. I'm not even english, for crying out loud. But I think he has to go, he has shown he doesn't have it in him to win games, make difficult decisions, and bet on victory even if that's a risk. Now, replacing them with another guy with the same mindset (no matter his tactical style) won't do anything either. You have to find someone who not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. And hire him. Unless that's done, England is doomed to always fall short of expectations.
