I could never hate Joel. What he did wasn’t right for humanity but it is as a father and nobody in that apocalyptic world saint enough to judge him and condemn him . I also understand what abby did as a daughter and don’t hate her but there’s just touch of hypocrisy there she wasn’t saint and strong enough to move pass her father’s death therefore causing her friends demise and if she thinks about it she was just the same as Joel he wasn’t saint and strong enough to lose another daughter for the world therefore he did what he did and paid the price and abby also paid the price and her friends. She created another version of her vengeful self through Ellie. She triggered another cycle of revenge and hatred and i think that’s why Ellie let’s her live to either stop the hatred or just continue another one. Love how the game just showcase pure human emotions and mistakes
This scene, that was set before Joel’s death has Ellie saying ‘I don’t know if I can ever forgive you, but I’d like to try’. That’s not hate. Allowing yourself to forgive someone from taking away something important from you (in this case Ellies desire to save humanity using her cure) takes a lot to do. Even at the time of Joel’s death, Ellie was begging him to get back up. She was crying and was distraught. Joel didn’t die thinking Ellie hated him, Joel died thinking Ellie was going to be killed next

From this exact scene, I just felt like for a moment he died thinking she hated him even because of the previous times she got mad at him. I think he felt sad to see that Ellie witnessed his death, and that probably after he was killed, she would be killed too, he must have thought that in the end he failed
The way the killed him off was so heartbreaking, I wish Ellie went on patrol with Joel that day to start her forgiveness and saved Abby so we got last time with Joel and Ellie.
