- Restored and colourised film originally shot in Barrow-in-Furness by Mitchell and Kenyon in early 1902.
Workers from the Flax and Jute Works on Hindpool Rd.
From BFI site
This example of the many 'factory gate' films made by Mitchell & Kenyon shows a largely female workforce, which helps to identify the unnamed factory as the Jute textile works. The showman, in a bowler hat, glances at the camera and playfully jostles one of the women. There is no attempt to hide the artifice - the acknowledgment of the camera's presence is encouraged.
The film was commissioned by Ralph Pringle, proprietor of the North American Animated Photo Company and a regular collaborator with Mitchell & Kenyon from 1901. The Barrow Herald for February 21 1902 promotes one of Pringle's presentations, announcing a show which included The Mad Mullah as well as Living Barrow.
Looks like most of them already know it is camera and most suddently react in various ways especially childrean ,they are always fabulous
I feel like apologising for how we are squandering what they built for us.
You mean how the elite squandered.
We've let them down, badly. 🇬🇧
This is what it takes to build a nation, others only suck it dry...
@@globaleye8 ......they keep telling us we have white privilege
We should be apologizing for the colonial methods they employed to build those things.
Fantastic stuff, really enjoyed it.
Absolutely fascinating!
School leaving age was 14. My mother left school age 14 in 1921. She died 107 in 2014. Liverpool UK
So your mom was born in 1907
School leaving age was 12 .
Very nice film the women coming out its probaly near freezing cold outside ,the woolen clothing keept themselves warm , a lot of jute mills in the 60ties and 70 ties very hot temp had to be moniterd in factories used to service the batching and other scales once seen jute burst into flames lol 😊😊
The final scene reminds me of a Lowry painting.
Brings tears to my eyes . Thanks for sharing this moving video. .
I Note that a lot of women avoid the camera, carefully shielding their faces. At 0:55 a woman saucily opens her shawl to reveal her entire face and starts hamming it up for the camera. She is then accosted by a man who tries to pull, then push her away
As has been pointed out, the chappy no doubt is part of the film crew.
When the veil was in Europe and the modesty of women, now they say that the veil is the dress of extremists
Some women hid their faces , as they did in a film shot in cairo , in 1920 ,that i saw on yt . Even some of the men did that . Back to Barrow , a great post . Thank you .
Stan laurel lived in ulverston born 1890, so not far from there
those kinds of things put things in perspective I think... Stan was 12 around this time! What a career he was about to have :D
@@neilloughran4437 yes one of the best comedy duo Stan laurel did a film Oliver hardy was in it lucky dog I think they got together later on .Stan house got a plaque on the house where he lived.
My God how fashions change , especially so for the ladies , back then they looked more like ladies from the Middle East in regard to the way they dressed.
how to stay warm when its cold.
@@BenStatewhy the women now don't do Like them?
@@user-mn7js5yc4v better options
They're in there work cloths, shawls were used to keep warm.
@hetrodoxly1203 no you would not be in public without a bonnet and shawl to wear as veil. Not weather
Thank you for posting this interesting video!
welcome!
Absolutely amazing loved it
Disturbing the number of children leaving that factory
Thanks for sharing this moving video !😄🌼
You are welcome!
Great video. I didn't know this existed. Times gone by until now. Great video pal.
Thanks mate! I've seen a quite a lot of your videos over the years! Hope you're "spot on" :D
fabulous
Fascinating to watch and rather emotional really, knowing all those people are long gone.
Thanks for showing Neil, did you ever have a relation called Nellie ?
My gran was a Molly.
Yes I do like to see old footage of streets . Welcome no I don't have relation that name
A few videos of factory women wearing shawls and everyone thinks pre-war British women wore hijab 😂
Rip greatx5 grandparents...
I think that hijab is the culture of only a eastern culture women but after I saw this video I realize that it's also a part of western culture . How beautiful this culture is that women and men are in suitable dress , the modern culture will destroy us and peace so we should think about it
I'm struck by the sight of the towering smokestacks, trailing dark plumes (2:05). They would have been visible for a fair distance. It must have felt like you were entering a land overrun by fire-breathing dragons.
I remember going on a school trip to Birmingham in 1973 . It was like that ! Now all gone to China .
That was the Iron and Steel works, once the biggest in the world, all gone by 1984.
That title had me tweaking tho
I'm currently reading Nella Last's War, which is about a Barrovian Housewife. I wonder if she came across any of these people in later life?
😊 muito lindo gostei de ver
🔥
What was the deal with the guy who grabbed the woman? He grabbed her by the arm then she ran off. Strange.
This was very interesting to watch.
part of the play acting... the company doing the filming would employ similar staged scenes for comedic effect.
@neilloughran4437 gotcha, thanks for the reply! I didn't know that was a thing.
She wasn't acting appropriate he was telling her to leave
Thanks Neil for this video I see woman wearing decent clothes, but now they don't wear anything 🤔🤔🤔
The way them women are dressed covering their heads a faces it could be this week in Dewsbury or Bradford.
Which country was this ?
England
Thx for clarifying 🙂
C'est ou dans quel pays
Nord de l'Angleterre.
Kid in center of picture thumbing his nose at the camerea at 0.53
Feels so strange that all the people onscreen are dead 😔
We are complaining about serious pollution? Check out 2:08. Of course, we also know that the 1.446 billion cars in the world today is far worse than whatever we see in this video.
Is there any reason why all of the women are dressed the same?
I’ve seen similar footage across the country at that time. Women, especially in the working classes dressed very similar to one another. Just the way it was.
Maybe they were oppressed just like the modern day "Muslim" women !
Company store?

Slaving your own people, what would you do to strangers ? Climbing rocks on top of the hill forever ?
Begitu sopan pakaian mereka menurutku.
Interesting thing happens from 55 seconds to one minute, between a man and a woman.
I suspect he was one of the camera crew.
@@tmhood yes it is likely a staged preplanned thing... these films are full of similar things...
Why do you have to insert your religion into everything?
I know they were wearing headscarf caused by cold climate but why the man doesn't wear that
It is Sagar Mitchell who is the owner of the company making the film.
@@neilloughran4437 thx for your info
Because the cold only affected women back then...
because it's not cold , it's modesty

All the women like muslims...
