  • A black miner makes an intriguing addition to an already captivating film of coal workers up from their pit.
Showman Albert Sedgwick, conspicuously raffish in homburg and moustache, bestrides and controls this film. Sedgwick has 'planted' the poster board advertising the show in which it's to be screened - as well as, probably, the Afro-Caribbean man whose presence in Edwardian Lancashire so surprises us. And he is choreographing, right before our eyes, the procession of colliers for the camera.

I dont think he's a miner. He's there with two friends and they seem to be enjoying themselves. Anyway someone can make out what he says to his friend?

check into the background of the makers and you will find that it is believed that the black fellow worked for them and was an actor encouraging livelier characters for the camera so modern day political correctness aside, the BFI should do their research

@@alhilford2345 there is clearly an African/Caribbean fellow there...these films were made to be seen that night in the local cinema, people were encouraged to get into the film then go see themselves that night on the big screen

Meijer, Whiteson, Banks, Francais & et al: of course the English man of African heritage is a local coal miner! What evidence do you have that he isn't? Except maybe disbelief that people of colour have existed all over England (be it, in small numbers, with the exception of Georgian London after the American War of Independence, when 10% of the population was black), since Elizabethan times. If you study the footage, you'll observe that he is wearing the same type of clothes as his workmates; that he is one of them by the way they all interact with each other; no one in his vicinity 'bats an eyelid' at his presence, indicating that he also lives amongst them. Finally, the way he is 'carrying on' with his mate, shows he is held in high affection and liked by his fellow colleague. I can send you plenty of written, photographic and video evidence of the presence of people of colour in the UK for the last four hundred years, or maybe if you just Google it, you can see for yourself. It's laughable that when the truth stares you in the face, you make all sorts of of modern racist excuses, from the film being doctored to actors being planted in the crowd or superimposed on the film. Do I smell conspiracies from the gutter?

But it's unfortunately quite clear that him and his friend have both been superimposed into this footage you can even see an out of place black mark appear next to his head between 29 and 30 seconds.

What are you on about 10%, majority of the studies say 1% and they are pushing with that. Africans have had little to do of shaping traditional British culture.
