- THIS is part one of 1 of 2 episodes, barrow in furness, sept & october 1961 can you recognise anyone from thIs era, ? i was 9yrs old at the time of the filming. these were really laid back days the 1960's BARROW town was booming, how wonderful our old market was compared to today
there was work for everyone, houses being built factories, were plenty there was a future for our children,
were has it all gone, Barrow is now the town that time forgot, our children don't have a future anymore
i say this with great sadness in my heart.

Wow, that brought back memories - beginning with the credits! I was 14 at the time the film was made and Allan Hammersley and John Hawkins were among my teachers at the boys' Grammar School. Richard H Keay had a photography shop in Dalton Road and was a Churchwarden at St Matthews which my family attended. Donald Sartain was the Director/Manager at the lovely old Her Majesty's Theatre where I was enthralled by my first visit to a live theatre production as part of a school outing. It was Romeo and Juliet. Many thanks for posting!
Wow, this is fab. A little different to today, what a shame ...and everyone is so well dressed. Love it : ) Great to see so many children outside enjoying themselves.
What a wonderful piece of nostalgia. I had forgotten how interesting Barrow was in those days.
Really good
really good bring,s back memories bit of an insult with the comment on barrow
never mind i love baarrow and am proud of it it has given me a good life
good on you bernard like it ray mcguire
You have got to be kidding me! That roundabout ride at the market was the same one that was later relocated to inside the market hall, and was still there well into the 80s! I remember riding on it many a time, and I'm still only in my 30s!
Thank you for posting. My home town. I'm 41 and don't live in the area. My parents still do. My father often tells me of what great town it was in the 60s, especially the many bands in the grand stands
We really appreciate you posting these Bernard. I for one love them :)
My ancestors are defo in a scene in this video lol
Barrow as I remember it... I was 4 (and living in Barrow) when this film was made!
Bernard...
Very nice of you to post these videos; will be great to view them all.
The town centre of the 60's looked good!
Sad that some people have to use such foul language and make unnecessary Political comment; especially when they unable to adequately express themselves or understand what they are talking about; however, allowances have to be made.
In the meantime, I am sure your videos will bring a great deal of pleasure to many people who will enjoy viewing them.
Ray
amazing all the women wearing skirts!
A Very well put together film 👍
Perhaps a new film would show how much and how little has changed 🤔
well Barrow was known as( THE IRON CITY BY THE SEA,) we were a very industrial town, and no doubt the makers of the film, saw us as a dirty little town, but same as you im proud of my town
thanks ray
there has been a lot of changes to the town since this film was made
Not exactly for the better
any from the bay horse in 1980 would be nice.
thank you so much ray, I put local history on for the Barrow people, to enjoy be it young old or now living around the world, all we have is our memories, yes your always guaranteed the foul mouthed and the ignorant to comment,
kind regards
