  • This video is in two parts:
1900: Mitchell and Kenyon, the filmmakers, take the audience on a nostalgic journey through Edwardian Nottingham. They captured a captivating footage of the city by filming from the driver's platform of a tram during a single trip between its two main stations in the city centre. The route taken during this journey is the same as the present-day Nottingham Express Transit tramway, passing through Listergate and Wheelergate, leading to Old Market Square, then turning right into Long Row and proceeding towards Queen Street.
During the Edwardian era, laceworkers rush back home for their lunch break. The footage, captured by Mitchell & Kenyon, is one of their earlier works in the "factory gate" genre and is filmed from an unusually elevated camera angle. As the workers of Thos. Adams and Co, a nearby lace factory, walk towards and beyond the camera, they curiously look upwards, perhaps attempting to catch a glimpse of what's happening. The film was screened at the Goose Fair in the Old Market Square in October 1900, as part of an exhibit of "Electric Living Pictures."

One can't help but feel sorry for the children seen on this video. They are those who, if survive long enough, would face both world wars... chilling and frightening yet so fascinating

    Whato all,
It's lovely to see such old shots of my city, but, by Jove, the buildings we have lost in the last 120 years! At least the "Old Angel" is still with us. Sadly, the "Turf Tavern" has been renamed.

That's the bottom of Mansfield Road, just off Lower Parliament Street. In the footage the old 'Midland' train station is on the right. It's now the Victoria Centre but the tower remains.

@@stevemclay7563Think you mean old ‘Victoria’ railway station, Midland station was on the left at beginning of film
