David Hoffman Reveals His Simple Anxiety Reduction Technique. Here Is How He Does It.

  • Yes I suffer from anxiety. Every day if I let myself. And over the thousands of interviews I have done, I found that almost everyone if not everyone has anxiety, their own personal kind of anxiety, worries about things that are or that could be or in many people's case, worries about things that already happened. It stinks.
I've developed my own technique for reducing anxiety and calming myself. It doesn't require much but a set of questions that I ask myself and a location that allows that to occur. I need to be seated in a comfortable chair in a comfortable place with background sound/noice that does not interfere with my thinking.
Some may call it a meditation but I don't. To me it is a way of checking in with me, of "seeing what condition my condition is in". The questions that I ask myself and that I check in on are ones that I've learned through the course of my life - anxieties that consistently bug me if I let them. I sit with my eyes open and I ask my body, my mind, my heart, my gut, to just let each of them go for a while so that I can be in the moment.
The results are quite wonderful and that is why I'm sharing this with my subscribers and others - with the hope that it also helps them to ask themselves their unique five anxiety producing questions and give themselves permission to just for a while, let go.
This video was partially made in Big Sur, California, a very special place on the planet that some say produces very special magnetic connections to the earth. Maybe it makes this kind of experience easier to do, but I have found it this technique that I am demonstrating in this video works pretty much anywhere if I sit the right place (good chair, feet on the ground, relatively quiet, uninterrupted, a chance to just "be”).
I have never made a video quite like this and I made this now because so many of my subscribers over recent years have asked me how I have made it to 81 with the energy that I have and the focus that I have. I believe that this is one of the reasons. Whatever age you are, I believe that this process will help you to calm down. Some folks that I have told it to have used it to help them with insomnia. I also hate insomnia. So when I have insomnia I get up from my bed and sit in a chair as I don't believe this self evaluative process works as well to get you ready to sleep as well when you are lying down with your eyes closed.
Please leave a comment if you have found this video a benefit as I would like to make more videos like this but am not certain that this will help as I hope it will.
And if you can, please click on the super thanks button below the video screen to the right. That support allows me to keep making videos and posting them on RUclips.
    Thank you
    David Hoffman filmmaker

Thank you, David. I always enjoy your documentary videos but this was an unexpected pleasure, even before you started talking about Big Sur. I live only two hours away, but I’ve only been there on my way to Esalen, which I’ve come to have mixed feelings about. (Most of them are still positive). But all of Big Sur is magical, and I should make a trip there again soon. I’ve been to Nepenthe but missed Phoenix - I will stop there next time, for sure.
I appreciate your sincere expression of gratitude toward your viewers. I think I speak for most of us when I say that we really appreciate you, too. It’s good to take a few moments and remember that. I hope you’re having a great evening.

@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker I find that many people have an idea of what meditation is “supposed” to do for them, and they walk around all wide-eyed with big smiles stapled on their faces, and I’ve encountered a lot of that at Esalen. If they’re sincere, that’s fine, but I get a little suspicious of it. I’ve had the opposite experience with meditation, because it makes me feel a lot more grounded. To each one’s own. Esalen is an undeniably beautiful place, though.

As a completely blind subscriber, I can say, without a doubt your descriptions and audio cues completely brought me to the place and state of mind of which I believe you were intending. Unfortunately my crazy brain started thinking about the coast and fishing in the water there. Then I remembered about the time I took my little 17 foot boat out of the Golden Gate with my two buddies and the water was really rough so we hit full throttle, thinking it could get us over the waves. It didn’t work, but it was a hell of an adrenaline run and now I think I need a drink lol. I very much appreciate this, and hope to come across more

This does help with the stress thank you. Things can get so hectic, so numbing, and before I know it, it's time to act like I've got my stuff together again. When I was young all my much older relatives would talk about how very hard their lives had been, but that doesn't register when you're a kid. Now of course they're all long gone, just me left. And life *is* so hard. But every day now I look for one good thing no matter what or where that is, and I write it down in the nicest book I have. I think as we age and suffer loss we just stop looking at the bigger world, and that's when we lose sleep, and minds, and faith. There, I've shared one back for you to ground yourself. Look up, appreciate, and always write it down.

  • @johnnyrottenpiss

I'm pretty sure I have undiagnosed ADHD. Because I am reluctant about medication treatments, I am always looking for alternatives to help me calm all the many thoughts that bounce inside my mind. I also get sleep paralysis, which can be very frightening, so finding a way to extract thoughts from my brain before sleep is very helpful. I will be returning to this video tonight to use this as a template to see if I can achieve the stillness you describe.
Additionally, I love the Northern California coast. The violence of the ocean crashing against the shore walls and eroding away the land that swallows entire buildings gives me a sense of wonder that proves my insignificance in this universe. There is a satisfaction I get knowing that if I fell asleep on the beach in Bodega Bay, the tide could rise and sweep me into an oblivion and the world would not blink. I have written songs about that beautiful place.

One man cannot heal the world, but many of us in our small ways , can make this life meaningful and bearable in times of trouble, and sometimes that can make the difference between living and giving up, it's sometimes all we mere mortals can do. Thnx. Honest. Not afraid to say your weaknesses want strength, want to not be a hammer that’s always wanting to hit you over the head or your gut.

Thank you David. What a wonderfully relaxing sound of the wind tinkling through the wind chimes. And the view of the Pacific Ocean from that back porch is breathtaking. Thank you for the reminder, to slow ourselves down, our racing mind. I am sitting here on an early Saturday afternoon, dreading the housework that I need to do, knowing that I still need to go grocery shopping for our thanksgiving meal for next week. You reminded me that when I am gone, my loved ones are not going to think about what type of housekeeper I was. Hopefully they’ll remember my love for them, the kindness and respect that I try to show everyone. Thank you David. You are one of a kind❣️

My meditation is similar...letting go. Allowing. Checking in with my body. Release. Observe. Beauty. Being. Knowing everything just is. You are not in control. Be present. Now. Breathe. Laugh. Gratitude. Watch the clouds. Get outside of myself. Singing bowl sounds and bells are helpful, too.
