When he said the vocalist would practice this is exile front to back that hit me, I used to do the same thing with Whitechapels music when I did vocals in my basement as a teenager.
NoLuckScape Exactly, the hardest part of vocals was learning highs, with my voice being deep it was harder to do that correctly, but I never hurt myself because I knew control. Phil actually helped me learn how to do gutterals more efficiently when I was at one of his live shows at the end of the ten year anniversary tour, it was awesome as fuck.
Nice to hear that phill doesn’t give a sh*t about the haters. I love their earlier stuff, but I’m so stoked about this new album. Music has to evolve. Making the same sound over and over again is also boring for the artist. I’m an oil painter, but I try to evolve too. Trying new things is part of journey. They got my support and looking forward to seeing them live
Honestly I feel like this album has so much more soul in it. Like this is him and his life and I’m here for it. And almost all the songs fucking go in, even with the clean vocals
I fell away from Whitechapel for a while. But this new sound, even Phil's clean vocals, are badass. Very well done. I'm really looking forward to the new album. And the shout out to Katatonia, hell yes.
Definitely looking forward to Phil releasing a book. I'm sure it will be a hard read but probably helpful for hus soul. This album is going to be very interesting
Happy to see Phil really talking...opening up. You can tell he's doing a lot better. Always have respect for these guys. Not a HUGE fan, but a fan of their evolution. Definitely defined the span of the genre and how it has grown. Love the new album wtf. Dude's killed it.
Evolution and growth is always a good thing, it obviously keeps things fresh for the artists themselves , of course most metal fans fear that but expanding your skillset is a good thing, now completely doing a 360 and all the sudden you want to be a different thing or be rich and famous and start making pop albums that sound like maroon 5 or some shit(hmm hmm, not gonna name any names), but in the case of whitechapel I really enjoy their newer stuff, they are evolving well
I unintentionally got into Whitechapel when my grandmother died. They were definitely the heaviest band I listened to at the time. Looking back their music definitely helped me through that time. Putting all of my grief and emotions into that music really helped me remain calm and be there for the rest of my family. Cheers for the awesome tunes guys and keep doing what you are doing!!
Been a Whitechapel guy since back when they were on Myspace having to tell people they weren't a church/church group. Fairy Fay is my all time favorite song. I'm good with a band "evolving" and trying new sounds, but seems like the technicality of the music decreases after This Is Exile. Not trying to hate, but it's impossible not to think they could and should be doing so much more with three guitarists. I'm good with the evolution of a band, just feels like they are limiting themselves with the guitar work. Make me appreciate The Black Dahlia Murder even more. They have evolved, but have kept true to their heavy roots while getting even more technical.
Love old Whitechapel and love this new sound as much or more. To me Whitechapel always evokes deep emotion, The Valley does this even more. Music, and all art, must evolve to remain interesting and relevant. Not that my opinion matters at all, but I love this evolution and love watching the growth of extremely talented musicians.
Phil is the reason I got into doing extreme vocals. Listening to This Is Exile and The Somatic Defilement then seeing Whitechapel live completely inspired me and I have never questioned why. Just accepted it because inspiration leads the way.
Being a long time Whitechapel Fan I love the new sound and respect they are trying new things. Will always see Phil as one of my favorites and will always look to his voice as inspiration for my own vocals when trying some out
I miss the old sound of Whitechapel. But I'm glad these guys are doing good. Makes me want to pickup their album just to support them. Eventhough I like the heavier side of things. These are genuine dudes.
whitechapel forever!!!
So down to earth, you guys are very confident and comfortable in yourselves, refreshing to see such think skin. I'm a long time fan but like you said music and people evolve that's just natural. People aren't taught "if you don't have something good to say, don't say it" anymore. People who are supposedly "adults" are spending more time watching/ listening to stuff they DON'T like so they can disrespect and hate, and I agree, it's a psychotic behavior. So back to the positive! Just keep being the wonderful humans you are, and thank you eternally for this very deep and personal journey into The Valley :) Sounds great!
Keep on progressing Whitechapel! I love all the softer more progressive tracks. When i first heard Hickory Creek i was like "THIS IS WHITECHAPEL?!! FUCK YEAHH!!"
I remember listening to red winter dying back when I lived in down there. I remember seeing them when it was just local shows. I'm super happy with how everyone has succeeded since the beginning
Hey, I gotta stay (again), This is My First album from Them, It's Fucking Awesome. It's embedding itself into My Brain like The Faceless Autotheism did. Non~Stop listening to It.
I love Phil’s gutturals and growls, because who doesn’t love them? But I also really enjoy Phil’s clean vocals. He has an amazing voice and talent no matter how he sounds.
when WhiteChapel released Mark of the Blade, the first song that really got to me was Bring me Home. it was a change of pace for the band but it was a great change of pace. IMO artists should always try new things, and having clean vocals in a Whitechapel song was VERY different. i loved it. the direction that they are heading in is a great one and i cant fucking wait to hear the new album
I was 12 when This is Exile came out and I first heard Whitechapel and I've been hooked since. Still jam it daily, but these last two albums don't hit the spot for me. Good on them for trying new things though
Think I was 15 when I saw them with Trivium on tour 2010. Didn't take to them at all, thought they were sorta 'too heavy' then recently have came round to them can't get enough of them, and actually went back and listened to the older albums and kinda like them, my hunger for heavier stuff has definitely increased since then
Truth be told. I don't dig their early work. Maybe because I discovered them when the singles off of this album dropped? Either or, I love this album, man. Dope ass release. Look forward to more of your work and sad I miss you guys a while back with Revocation

Came back to re watch this interview and that shoutout made me look into SOI.
Not even 10 seconds in and phil already spitting the truth
It's very fortunate to hear Phil's speaking voice sound so strong and full and healthy despite how hard and gutteral he has always gone in his vocals.
He has great technique, that is why he hasn't damaged himself much
That's why he hasn't damaged himself AT ALL, if you do your vocals right, there's no damage done to your vocal chords, he's amazing.
When you learn how to do growls you won't hurt yourself, I know That because I learned it myself.
NoLuckScape Exactly, the hardest part of vocals was learning highs, with my voice being deep it was harder to do that correctly, but I never hurt myself because I knew control.
