    How many WIPs & UFOs do you have? Do you have any good strategies for working through them?

    I have to comment as I watch, ir I will forget...definitely do the low volume quilt. That is something I would like to do.

    I would take those huge blocks with the blue and white string quilt and just put together what you have done and either donate to charity if you don't care for it, or make it a general use quilt for around the house. The Farmer's Wife blocks are amazing! I would make a goal of making 5 per month all year (picking your favorites each month from what is left) and then at the end of the year, set them together, no matter how many you have, and be finished!

    I suggest you make blankets/floor quilts for your local animal shelter/s with any of the blocks or partially completed projects you decide you don’t want to finish but can’t throw away. The shelters will appreciate them and as they’re fabric, they’ll be able to launder them. You won’t have to worry if any of the fabrics and blocks match as the animals won’t care, they’ll just know they’re being kept warm and not laying on a concrete floor.

    In your orphan blocks, the quilt top you have is needing to have applique'd flowers, leaves and vines in the white rows between the blocks! That would make it fabulous! Just do them as raw edge fusible and it would go pretty quickly! It would make that top absolutely lovely! If you don't want to do it, you can always just send it to me, and I would be happy to have it and finish it:) Lol!

    Definitely would like to see the farmers wife quilt finished as you have put so much work into it already and the blocks themselves spoke to me!! I would also like to see your Sons first quilt finished and definitely to a size that he can actually use it, he might grow to love it then (as you say it may have been to big a project for him to start with). Maybe complete a WIP or UFO and then 'reward' yourself by starting and completing a new project. x

    The quilt blocks your son sewed are precious. Just add a couple of borders to make a throw, but a large one he can use until he's grown. And add a label on the back with his name, age and date so he'll always remember.
    I'm sold on the way Karen at Just Get It Done Quilts makes "after-quilts", using up scrap to make the quilt backing. You could add several blocks to accent the backs of other quilts.
    You could also make throws or wall hangings by combining several orphan blocks.
    Don't feel too overwhelmed, I'm in the same boat... So many orphan blocks (most of them inherited), all different patterns, sizes and colors.

    Consider putting those scrappy 3" square strips on the wall behind you, maybe adding some of those orphans you won't ever use to make a sculptural reminder wall of how far you've come. I'd love to see you finish that very colorful Farmers Wife. 2nd would be the Low Volumn. Maybe have your Subs send you some low vol scraps(?).Maybe have your son cut up some of his old clothes to make a scrappy border for his quilt....makes a great memory thru the years. Make those hexi pieces into a pillow sham case and start an Etsy shop to sell them. So much you've done. I'm just a beginner and am determined not to let my WL quilt become a UFO. thanks Kristen!

    I enjoy your videos. You speak into the camera like your are speaking to a friend in person. I hate having too many WIPS & UFOS. I'm pretty good about finishing quilt completely. I do not like to use single material quilt backing. I always make a quilt reversible. Front side is the "good" side, that I'm happy with and the back/alternate side is for orphan blocks, crumb blocks, etc. You can always use borders to make the blocks fit your needs.

    The Farmers Wife's is a wonderful Scrappy rainbow 🌈!! The blue strips are EXQUISITE!! So are the orphan blocks!! I love all the UFO and WIPs. If not quilts any or all of them they could be purses, pillow shams, added to things like jeans - jean jacket as appliques, wearables or anything else quilted!! I would love to have digital copies of them for paper crafts. I love your hot mess strip!! There are NO MISTAKES in ART only opportunity to create other things. I have WIP and UFS projects in paper crafts, sewing and crochet!! Mine are mostly packed for a impending move and used to be hidden all over the house. Don't be so quick to throw your blocks away or make pillows out of them. You can use whatever you want on the back of a quilt. Yes some engineering is required to make them fit but you can use solid coping strips and sashing to pull it all together. I call it the AfterQuilt and can be as much fun a a quilt top. 😊 You are very talented.

    I have just started my first full FPP quilt so would love to see you finish that project. Maybe one block a week? I think you could take the blue strips from your QAYG project and use them with the log cabin project. I would cut up the log cabin into blocks and then use the strips to make more. And if you buy some minky for the back of your son’s quilt it might entice him to finish. Good luck with them all!

    During lockdown friends & family gave me their old jeans some with rips or signs of wear & tear, too big or too small. Anyway I cut them into strips and then sewn them together cut them across the strips to give me squares and I was hopping to make a buggy liner for my grand daughter, I bought some beautiful pink and white lace to edge it with, I’m stuck because i’ve never sewn a button hole, I’m scared to try because I don’t want to ruin it. I need to practice. But I looked at this quite big piece of material and thought it would make a beautiful bag. But seeing you pieces made me think, bags, table mats, dolls clothes or dolls quilt sets you could probably sell them.

    I love how you dig deep and pull it all out and consider it all and share. If they were mine I might be inclined to try and combine those quilted practice pieces with the QAYG sections. Those sew along or bee blocks would make a super cute cot quilt and you could use that quilt top you have as the back. I too am in the mind set now to pull it out, combine as see if things just will fit together. I have some Appliqué blocks made with Kaffe I never finished all and am not in love with how they set them. I am pondering now how to just use what's made, add settings to and make a top and be done. Sometimes you have to just do it or give it up and let someone else use it.

    FPF is fussy and sometimes you just want to do some rogue sewing. How about making a commitment to do two or three a week. I agree with the strings being home use items. Finish in between a bigger project. Make the “log cabin” into a quilt. It’s very dramatic and it will look gorgeous when done. I also find I start wanting to make smaller projects out of things I’m just tired of looking at. All of the different size blocks would be really adorable as a quilt. The different size blocks draw the eye to each individual block. I love the squares that you’re not in love with but I wonder if you would consider using black fabric as a background so the colors pop. If you don’t have enough blocks make a bed runner or table top. You could turn smaller unfinished things into pouches or totes. I love all of your projects!!!

You could use it as a wallhanging, table mat, or even decorating the top of a sofa.

      Thanks so much for the suggestions! I need to just keep mentioning the quilt to my son I think and try to get him excited about it again - he was at one point!

    The first with the 26 blocks: I would do as much as necessary for a square or rectangle, and sahing and borders until it reaches an useful quilt size. That is what I do with blocks.
    Hexies: I made flowers and appliqued them on squares and added leave blocks.
    Yes, finish your son's quilt to a nice usable quilt, it is so happy and bright.

    If you're still taking comments on this, I LOVE a design challenge + zero waste! Some ideas: I fully agree with your commitment to doing color-driven projects. I'm entirely the same. And like some others here, am aesthetically most drawn to the low-volume crumbs. I think pairing that as a background 'canvas' on which to place the gorgeous OPP's (27:02) would be amazingly striking for each: the organized modern chaos of the crumbs coupled with the super tidy, old-fashioned hexis - YUM. Similarly, I think the B+W hexi one would go better with other B+W orphan blocks to be integrated in a different setting, rather than trying to force disparate color schemes together, based on their construction type or block shape. The orphaned X-blocks would work as backing for the low-vol project - they have a similar color principles for me.
    In terms of the scrappy denim fragments: cut down into c. 7" squares, they would make a great scrappy, latticed border - e.g. around the rainbow quilt. Then lastly, I think a bunch of your more saturated orphan blocks could be integrated into the Famer's Wife project: they're around the same size and visual density. 😊 P.S. Thanks for bringing some chilled out energy to RUclips !

      Thanks so much for all of these suggestions! Some of these blocks and half finished things have been used now but not all. I’m hoping to finish the low volume one by the autumn maybe…we’ll see…I keep getting distracted 😂! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Hi there. Enjoying the video! What stood out to me was the block on your lap at around 19 minutes in with the red stripe on it... I think that would be great cut into strips for another quilt.

    Pat Sloan posted a video where she used her orphan blocks. She cut the blocks up, using them in a new block. They looked great. Ok think it was posted today, 1/13.

    I really love the Farmers Wife journal quilt stories. However, I would love to see how you use your scrappy quilt pieces. It appears to me you have just had a great time trying lots of things, whicjh honestly is what I do, also. This was fun to see, I'll look forward to seeing your finished choices.

    I love the prompt ones ( started with colorful " rain drops ") would love to see that finished. The blue ones ; I like the idea of using first one for smaller projects ,2nd could join first after cutting down or trim & join . I have " currently " ( always changes ) 4 quilts to be quilted already in sandwiches, 3 QAYG projects in progress , and about 6 WIP, and maybe 8 ufo's

      Glad I’m not the only one with so many projects! Unfortunately in my haste to get a UFO finished I butchered those prompt blocks 😱! You can see how I ruined them in my ‘worst quilt ever’ video… we live and learn!

    Just found your channel and loving your style. I have a couple of UFOs. I get them out every now and then, put them on a working wall but eventually I get sick of seeing them and have no clue what to do with them so I put them back! I think it's mainly because of fabric choice! I just can't throw them! Wouldn't it be great to have a UFO project swap?

    You could continue sewing together all the scrap orphans that you don't like and make dog quilts to donate to an animal shelter or vet. You could back them with old blankets and I'm sure they would be very grateful. It seems such a waste to bin the fabric. They could also be good for homeless shelters!

    • @ScrapFabricLove
      @ScrapFabricLove  2 года назад

      Oh I definitely would never bin anything! Since this video I have made a few ‘cat quilts’ for my local cat rescue with some of the blocks and I also made a huge orphan block quilt for my husband with some of them too.

    I was gifted some truly hideous fabric…that was actually painful to even look at…and of course the person who gifted it was really excited to see what I made with their expensive (but revolting) fabric choices. So, I decided to make an “ugly” quilt (not letting them know that was the premise) and made a picnic quilt out of it. It used all the gifted fabric and now when we go to family events there is a comfortable quilt I 100% don’t mind putting on the ground or having children eat on…

    Oh, THAT'S why people buy kits. I've got a few misfires, but you have a lot that are really far along. You are more ambitious and exploratory than I am. Brave quilters have more marginal projects. Not everything needs to be 'finished.' Any artist studio will have lots of canvases stacked face to the wall. It's all process, not all product.

    • @ScrapFabricLove
      @ScrapFabricLove  2 года назад

      That is a very generous way of putting it 😂! Thanks! Yes I am starting to learn not everything needs to be finished!

    Life's too short and your time is too valuable to spend it with things you don't like. I decided several years ago to have an honest talk with myself and decided to get rid of things I didn't want to spend anymore time or money on and sent some bags to good will and the really awful stuff went into the trash. Since I'm older and slower now I don't collect many UFOs and those I do I put together into small wall hangings (I don't need another totebag). Sometimes you have to be brutal.

    You are thinking too big for a lot of your pieces. I kept thinking, just square up and make pillows or "After Quilts". Watch Karen Brown @ Just Get IT Done Quilts. She has some great ideas.
    You kept saying "I really didn't like/love". For those things if you don't want to finish them maybe put them up on Etsy or take them to your Guild, someone will like the colors and you can sell/give/swap.
    Hope that helps a little.

    • @ScrapFabricLove
      @ScrapFabricLove  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! Yes I’ve seen Karen Brown’s after quilts but some of this stuff I don’t like enough even for that 😂. I’ve made a few since into mini cat quilts for my local shelter. I know my own cats like sitting on quilts so figured they would too! And cats don’t mind so much what it looks like 🤣. But you are right I do think too big sometimes and end up spending time on things I don’t enjoy- trying to stop that!!

    I know this is an older video but perhaps a suggestion for the future….. you purchase other people’s WIP’s so why don’t you sell some of yours so that other people can use them? You may be sick of seeing them but to someone else they may be amazing.
    I buy other people’s scraps and sometimes there are bits of blocks or something someone has abandoned because maybe they didn’t like it. I honour them and put them in random and messy quilts.
    There is one particular quilt as you go hexagon abandoned project that I purchased and I can tell the person got frustrated and doesn’t hand stitch but it was chucked into another bundle I bought. I plan to do some decorative hand stitching over the stitching that’s already been done and include it somehow in a quilt. I donate most of what I make to charity so I don’t have to love the end result but hopefully someone will. 😊

      Thanks! Yes I have sold one WIP and given away another but I guess I still feel like I’ve started so recently that nothing is old enough that I’ve given up hope for it yet 😂. Definitely a good option for the future though!
