Everyone here bitching about the set and her age are hilarious. First of all Ethel Merman (the original Reno for Christ's sake) played Reno a second time well into her upper 40's. Secondly this is basically an homage to the original 1934 production where the set was basically this. Chill out. Not everything has to be done the way Broadway does it now. Caroline O'Connor is legendary.
Yes, Caroline O'Connor's singing and dancing are perfect!
And her physical resemblance to Ethel Merman is uncanny
WHO IS BITCHING? SHE ROCKS!!
There’s something magical about Caroline O’Connor. When she played this role she exuded youth and energy. The woman should be a much bigger star.
I totally agree
Understatement! She is amazing!
I of course had Sutton Foster's Reno in my mind before seeing the Aussie version in Sydney. At first I was a bit shocked seeing Reno depicted as a slightly older woman, but I think it actually really worked with the storyline. Caroline was an absolute hoot - she had fantastic comedic timing, amazing chemistry with all the male characters particularly Todd and she had brilliant vocals. Never having seen her in anything before, I went in with no preconceptions about her abilities but she was fantastic. Maybe the cast worked out any issues in Brisbane or Melbourne because everything was seamless at the Sydney show and the cast brought an amazing energy and rocked the house. It was as good as anything I've seen in London's West End.
It's funny because Caroline reminds us more of the original Reeno that was Ethel Merman and that she strays a bit from the vibe of Sutto and LuPone, in fact O'connor played Merman in the Cole Porter biopic musical movie so this is a full circle.
This tap is MUCH more authentic to the style of the 30's. sorry Suttonites (and yes she was brilliant). But this is brilliant in its own way. Reno is an evangelist nightclub singer who is supposed to be a little passed her prime so the ageism presented within the comments doesn't really fit. I have directed and choreographed this show many times and I love this take on it. Caroline O'Conner is brilliant as a hoofer from the 30's. The style is dead on.
She's killing this!! I love the raspy bits😻
I saw the opening night in Brisbane at the QPAC last night. I don't know why there is so much negativity in the comments here. I have had over 30 years in musical theatre in London, Copenhagen, Hong Kong and Australia and I must say this production was fabulous. OK, Caroline might not have been an ideal Reno, but the rest of the cast is superb. The choreography is fun, lively and enthusiastic, the set is great (why should it have to be a monotone colour like other productions!!??), the costumes are outstanding, very much in the period, the orchestra sounds terrific and the lighting is crisp and gives the show so much personality. I could not find any faults in what I saw and heard and would recommend others to go and see for themselves. Practically the whole audience were on their feet for a standing ovation at the end and my group of friends also thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done, everyone!
And Aussies don't give standing ovations easily.
Caroline O'Connor was born to play this role. She is amazing! Brilliant supporting cast too.
SIMPLY BRILLIANT MY FAVOURITE THEATRE ENTERTAINER CAROLINE O'CONNER
She's the Australians' answer to Ethel Merman - absolutely fabulous!
She played Ethel Merman in the Cole Porter biopic.
Omg I was sitting at the back watching this at the Sydney Opera House and before watching this video I absolutely did not know that she was slightly older than what I thought she was!! From her voice and dancing she seemed so young! So surprised that she completely fooled me, well done. 😊
Oh, and my dear misskikikat: Mary Martin was 48 when she played the 20-something Maria in "The Sound Of Music". Did she look completely ridiculous? No, she made theatre history.
I'm ashamed to say I didn't know of her until "you'll shoot your eye out." WHAT a talent!
Holy shit she can dance and CAN DANCE O___O
My 11 year old and I saw this on the weekend, and at first I was a little underwhelmed with the first act. However, near the end of Act 1 (where this moment is from) and all of Act 2, this production really came into its own. It was brilliant and my daughter loved it.
Bloody brilliant! I was in the chorus of our College production of "Anything Goes" back in the day, and have loved this show ever since. I wish I could have seen this production, it looks top notch.
How anyone dances like that beyond the age of 19 is amazing.
I don’t understand why people keep dissing this and comparing it to others. It was amazing in its own way and her age has nothing to do with it really, she can dance like no ones business and she can also sing. I absolutely adore Sutton’s and Ethel’s performances but it’s unfair to compare them, they are different people and different productions ❤️❤️
thank you so much for posting
Very well done, and SO well filmed and recorded!
Awesome I've never seen or heard of this before
Another great version is the 1988 Tony-Awards. That one was amazing :D
Great version. Just like the one I saw in my hometown theater.
Saw this the other night at QPAC in Brisbane. Caroline O'Connor is awesome!
Them that can......DO. Them that can't, critisize. This is a lively, accurate version with a talented cast.
AWESOME!
That lady has a rocking body.
Great voice for this part.
she has bornt this role😊
LOVED her energy, her delivery and her Merman-esque belt. The choreography ... eh ... I would have liked a bit more variety in the moves but they executed it well. Yes, I saw Foster and LuPone but what's the point in comparing. They're all good in different ways. I think I would have really enjoyed seeing this production, with this Reno, very much.
(Edit) Changed my mind. Just watched it again and this choreography is pretty good and it just dawned on me, this is the orchestration from the LuPone version but Patti just kinda faded into the background whereas this woman, like Sutton, hoofed it all the way through. Sorry for the comparison, lol!
I'm not a big musical fan, but I've loved this song since Kate Capshaw sang in Temple of Doom!
Elaine Paige has done it and most recently Sutton Foster. Whilst Caroline here, works extremely hard, my favourite is still Patti Lupone's version from the 1988 Tony Awards!
That said, I've now watched this about 10 times, and Caroline actually looks like a 1920's girl... Adorable!
A-MA-ZING!
AAWWEESOME *--*
I saw this show last yr 😍😍😍
❤🎉😊
this is under whelming after suttons. dont get me wrong both are amazing
The lighting design is kinda bad. Why is it so dark? It looks like a local production in terms of set and lighting. But the talents are top notch. I love the choreography and the new dance arrangement as well.
Indy; "Nice try Lao Che..."
who's the big red head
Is this the finale?
I know that caroline is the star of the show (and does an incredible job at doing so), however I just cannot keep my eyes off of Sam Dodemaide.............!!!!!
I only have one regret, that Caroline stops singing too soon!!! I want ALL the verses sung by her *__*
Caroline O’Connor is a fabulous Reno and I’m a little bit in love with her but WHY IS HER WIG BLACK???? It does not work. Like, at all.
I'VE SEEN SO MANY PEOPLE SING THIS AND WHY DOES NO ONE WANT TO HIT THE NOTE IN THE END. GET IT TOGETHER PEOPLE! If you can't hit that note, what are you doing playing Reno Sweeney.
Emily Cardona MAYBE BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE HAVE A VOCAL RANGE AND DANCING FOR 6 MINUTES STRAIGHT MIGHT BE HARD! I'D LIKE TO SEE YOU TRY TO DO THAT WHEN YOU'RE IN YOUR 50s!
The note that Sutton hits in the Broadway revival is not the note that is written in the score. The original note is much lower. I'm not sure what "note" you're talking about.
Emily Cardona because that sacred note is not what the note originally written
Everyone's a critic.
Compare this to Patty LaPone or Sutton Foster - two greats from this show in past years, and Caroline O'Connor does not come anywhere near them. In fact she looks like completely ridiculous in this role and should make way for some more talented younger performers who clearly could have done so much better in the role.
+misskikikat That's ageist and offensive and ultimately untrue. Maybe you're jealous?
+misskikikat You cannot be more wrong
Ann Miller was the best Reno Sweeney, with Bobby Van 1977 Magic
I still don't like the staging but Caroline looks like she's having so much fun and really brings a lot to the role and because of her I can't bring myself to hate this
Still, I feel like they're trying to make Caroline's Reno more like Sutton Foster or even Stephanie J. Block, and I feel like an approach similar to Patti LuPone or Elaine Paige as Reno would have worked better for her.
This is amazing but I love Patti LuPones version!!
Caroline will always be Nini to me 🤭
We saw this yesterday at the 1pm matinee. Wasn't impressed. Nowhere near as good as the 2011 production at the Arts Centre. Wayne and Todd were as good as ever but Reno was miscast.
It's such a shame the Australian production isn't the same as the new Broadway version..... I'm sorry but this version is pathetic! Caroline is a great talent but they should have had someone younger in the role, the set is atrocious and there is no where near enough dancers to make this number as spectacular as it should be. I'm very disappointed in this version.
William Burns I've seen high school versions better than this as well William Burns, and you're right it would have worked much better with a younger person cast as Reno. I know plenty of amazing talented singers/dancers from my work in theatre and think they could have done a much better performance. However like you said also the sets and also the amount of dancers, also makes for this not being the best version I have seen of this!!
William Burns right cause we're doing this musical at school and it says that Reno is suppose to be young and happy
Where in the script does it say her age?! Nowhere.
here cuz fallout 4
She was amazing! but sorry almost no one can beat Sutton Foster
Australia always misses the mark. Not enough money in the budget, could they not afford tap mics? Something about every Australian productions never quite being one par with the rest of the world and it's all to do with money.
It sounds a little like one of the men is off key after they finish the dance section. I love this show, but I hate to say I wasn't overly impressed with this. It's not bad, but Patty Lapone and Sutton Foster were / are far superior.
She's kind of old for the role, isn't she ? lol
+Hilary Tsai Patti was 38 Caroline is in her 50's...but she does pull it off
+Stephen Pike +Hilary Tsai +Hansel Jesus Moya Rivera and Suttan was 36-37!
I really love caroline, but she is miscast in this production, while she is a good reno, she is definatly not out standing and looks a bit tired, I think Sutton foster set a new standard for reno, but then again if we saw Sutton all the time the character would never develop.. this said I found this a very boring version, but then there's Patti Lupone another older reno, who pulled it off. I find it really weird thought that they would cast Caroline, even thought she had done the role in the early 2000s, I found little to take away from this production apart from a few quaint bits of choreography here and there, overall it was ok but really not up to what it could have been.
No token minorities. Just clean white performers. Beautiful.
The fact that this lady didn't hit the high note and the end really made the whole performance underwhelming for me.
Aussie theatre is run on a shoestring.
The American Broadway one was way better
She has a great voice, but not nearly as sassy as Patti's. Patti Lupone felt like she was in charge of the whole theatre when she sang.
wtf
Ah. The set makes me cringe a little. I'm not sure about the dance break either..
No...
Sorry but this is absolutely nothing compared to Sutton Foster
Kitty on Pointe; I think that this is actually much better "Anything Goes" performance than the Sutton Foster´s group´s in New York in the USA and it is too more near the original Cole Porter´s the 1930´s visions. That is what I call a talented and great musical performance.
I don't like it she ruined it
