Snow storm by 4x4, Land rover defender 110 and Mitsubishi shogun take on The Beast from the east

- After conquering enormous waves crossing the channel during storm Emma we arrive in the UK faced with the collision of storm Emma and The Beast from the east. Both of us were keen to experience some extreme weather, perhaps this was a little more extreme than we imagined but hey that makes for a good story. We needed to get from Portsmouth to Dartmoor in Devon to stay with our friends who live on the edge of Dartmoor. From the forecast it was clear that we would be crossing the red warning zone and pretty much the eye of the storm. When things got really bad we teamed up with a couple in a Land rover defender 110 who as it turned out were just trying to get home. Digging snow, Recovery and a spinning of wheels followed for much of that night! Spending what little time remained that night sleeping at an abandoned Starbucks, that doesn't happen every day!
It is not often we get to experience such extreme conditions. Although this event was very hard going for us both physically and mentally it is one that we will treasure in our memories and go down in our greatest overlanding moments.

What a lovely calm voice over... no bad language, no worried inflections, great video. Thankyou
Thank you David 😁 need to catch another weather event!
13:05...
I can watch videos like this for hours, I love the storms!
So good to hear! I will be on the watch for more storms 😆
I came for the ‘Defender’ in the title. I stayed to be part of the adventure. Great vid!
Great to hear so! We hope you continue to enjoy our future adventures 😎
Great film. I once drove overnight across Normandy in a snowstorm - in a diesel Ford Mondeo! Ferry had dropped me in Dunkirk. Had to meet up with the girlfriend in Rouen at 10am the following morning. Still remember staring at those enormous irrigation ditches. If I'd dropped it into one of those it would have taken a crane to get me out. Super concentration required and very low speed. Good job Normandy is relatively flat - I made it albeit a couple of hours late. Girlfriend had come on the train from Paris, couldn't understand why I was absolutely knackered!
Feel a tiny bit jealous as that was a proper adventure, ay?! You made it through together. And that's what counts.
Thankyou for sharing your adventure, Superb video.
Always happy to share the adventure 😀👍
Very entertaining hitching a lift with you ! Weird to see England with that amount of snow and look apocalyptically quiet ( used to it in Scotland ) ;-) Anyway thanks for filming and sharing, great fun.
That's brilliant! Thank you for saying so. It was a tough night but wow what an adventure.. need to go to Scotland in winter!
@@JKoverland If you enjoyed that, come to Canada. We have that weather in May and driving around in it is child's play. Great video though, start to finish.
I would very much like to travel Canada! Although by May I'm hopeful for some sunshine 😂 Thank you!
Now that's an adventure😱
Great video, great adventure. Well done for getting through it.
The good old shogun, mine gets me almost anywhere.
Most underrated 4x4.
You are right there! Just keeps on truckin!!
that was one of the better videos iv seen on you tube-ever. I was glued to the fkn screen!
Glad you enjoyed it mate 😁🖐
i recall in 1981 when crossing the channel from Dover....watching of off the starboard beam we could see a 'HoverLloyd' ferry. You know, the huge vehicle carrying hovercraft...actually disappearing into the troughs of the waves. We couldnt see them for about 5 seconds. When you dont have Snow Chains :) , let your tyre pressures down. Treat it like sand. Great adventure! Thanks for sharing :)
Something else when it is that rough 😅 quite exciting in a way. Yes we should have lowered our tyres I thought of this just after, Kristina was not best pleased to hear so 😂 we got out with the aid of the traction boards and a bit of digging.
And it would not be a good idea if you do not have a compressor. You had 3h on the road ahead of you.
Great video! I have a Shogun myself and she in snow like this every year! couple that to -25 and she still plods along haha
They do just keep on going right! 😁
@@JKoverland I love it!
Great vídeo, what a trip! Snow everywhere!
Thanks! Yeah it was quite spectacular to see 🙂
I can't wait for this to happen again 😍
I know me too 😁😁
Wow, what an incredible adventure this episode was.
Two of the best vehicles to have in weather like that.
iv'e had Shoguns for 20 years, swapped this year for a BMW. It was like Torvill and Dean on the snow and ice. Going back to Shogun when my funds build up....
You are right there 😁 glad to hear you will be going back to Shogun life after a breif interval 👍 bmw in the snow 😅
Looks like fun adventure!
Oh yes! Many more to come 😎
epic footage Awesome experience!!
Thank you! One to look back 😀 exhausted at the time.
Added to my 'Beast From The East ' playlist :)
Beast from the east deserves it's own playlist 😁
Just got myself a 4x4 with A/T tyres for Amazon Flex and secretly hoping we get another Beast of the East. Great video guys.. especially as I live in Devon and recognise the Starbucks you were at.
Take it you made no money with flex 😅
Would love to see another vid like this the winter coming up !!
Amazing, nice driving btw
Thank you! This was quite an experience 😁
What a great adventure that was :)
Love your videos
Keep it up♥️
Wow amazing footage
Thanks James 😁
Great drive that and nice to see some decent 4x4s proving their worth. I live in the north of Scotland so we see a fair bit of this most years and the best car I’ve ever seen for deep snow apart from the tractors is a Citroen 2CV driven by an old dear from a local farm. She and it were unstoppable 😀
I do like a 2cv not sure I'd overland although I'm sure it would be unstoppable 😄
@@JKoverland Me neither but I think to be fully effective it has to be driven by a Granny in a tweed coat 👍🏻😀
Happy you two are alright, what a trip.
Thank you, we made it 😄
sublime!!!!!!!!!
Best snow video ever great
Hey! Cheers 😁
Another marvellous adventure! ;). Your videos inspiring me & my wife to start some thing like that. we re planning to start our journey. Thanks & keep sharing... Love from Pakistan.
Thank you very much! That is great news to us 😀 cheers to great adventures!!
epic adventure out in the snow, nice one
22:56 that an apocalyptic scene right there
It is really fun seeing what England was like back then... My part of the country only really got a light bit of snow, felt really left out!
Good job defender was in front breaking the way
🙌
You really should have checked on those drivers in those stranded cars.
yea and worked with the chap in the defender sooner. Incredible the power of team work. and how rapidly things get tougher and tougher as the time passes. Some friends and i got stuck in the Mendips in the same storm. With quick thinking and hard work managed to get ourselves and many, many other less able people and families to safer places making sure no one we saw went without. we also were just in our saxos and clios
Sort of agree, but then the were far to many to deal with and the trucks have supplies, heaters, cookers etc.
Wow! Really intense 😵
Certainly an experience 😁
Just came here from your latest snow video and you came through the town I live in, in Chard! I thought I recognised it before you said, wow what an adventure you had too!
Sure was 😅👍
Great video! I didn't think that England got that much snow. Don't forget to buy an ice scraper!
,Great video. I enjoyed your adventure through the snow. It was Interesting to see that just like in Canada, the biggest hazards to your trip was other vehicles stuck in the snow. Slow and steady was the appropriate way to navigate through what in Canada would have been called a blizzard. The snow drifts are quite hazardous to you in two ways. The first you van get high centered on top of one. Secondly the drift can be as hard as concrete and at speed will cause mechanical damage to you vehicle. I am glad the temperature was only - 3C.
Thank you 😁👍 a very rare occurrence for us in the UK so people are generally not ready for it! But having 4x4 certainly helps 🤘
Wow yea that was a storm for sure . Ran in to that kind of storm in Montana once you don’t go any where fast there were three rigs in are group. the sheriff said we were the only ones to make it over the mt . Was not fun at the time ,but now we all laugh about it . Awesome video . From Steve stott in sutherlin Oregon u.s.a.
Something about a good snow storm really does it right 😀
Great that you didn’t panic but for the sake of your health and the mechanical longevity of you 4x4 please learn the basics of off road driving simple things like tire pressure and throttle control will go along way a defender should not have gotten stuck as for you lil bitsamissin (Mitsubishi) all tho less hard core off-road equipped you should have been fine too thanks for the upload if your raver in west England again I be happy to show you guys about and give you tips happy trails
That part with all the trapped lorries looked like something out of a zombie movie
Exactly what I thought never seen anything quite like it! Was a REAL experience.
Jesus guys....looks crazy !!!!
That it was 😂
Great video Just as well it was at night When I have been out during daylight hours in snow in my Toyota Land Cruiser I find all the cars that are stuck give you a hard time and block your path when they see you coming, they think you should line up the same as them and wait I have been verbally abused many times and have had to give up my journey due to abuse from others
Madness, I don't understand it 🙈 just keep on trucking 😁
Great video, really spooky with all the abandoned vehicles. I have a 2006 Shogun on chunky snow tyres but the trouble is all the cars on summer tyres stranded blocking your path! I guess as long as you can get around them it's ok, it's fun having the right vehicle in the right conditions
Such an experience, not often get to see a weather event so extreame especially here in the UK. Tyres are important but I found nothing can be done one the snow drifts get so high and it packs underneath, apart from get your shovel out 😅
Oops that’s embarrassing, the mighty defender getting stuck in that little bit of snow! My ranger goes through snow twice that deep. Getting stuck though is part of the fun and the adventure. This is just about enough snow to have some fun. If you can get some speed going it’s fun to tow people on sleds behind the vehicles, that is until you hit a tree! Enjoy the snow cause who knows how many more years we’ll get it before climate change destroys the world.
😂😂 it was worse than it looked the soft snow was covering a hard layer of ice! Your right it is all part of the fun and a great adventure story to look back on.
Jeez, that’s just a little dusting of snow here in The Great White North.
💕
🥶
Did you have WINTER tyres on, or ALL SEASON tyres?
I'm a local dartmoor lad, I feel you, so dangerous conditions up there in winter, where abouts do your friends live ?
Yeah incredible! Was a couple years ago now but wow never forget that one. We were on the way to Devon.
Hi guys, it would be a good idea, to place where to buy the ferry ticket and the costs so we can also have an idea of expenses that a trip could have.
An epic trip in the ferry!!!!
Diogo Baptista Hi Diago, we did keep track and do want to make a video about it. Watch this space 👍
Wow where I was in the south east had 10cm on Tuesday and began to melt by 4 in the afternoon and just a dusting on Wednesday and a dry and cold day of Tuesday and them heavy snow on Friday evening for a about 3 hours before it turned to rain
😁 this was couple years ago now but wow what an experience it was!
As a finn i chuckled a bit.. i have that adventure every year just driving to my own yard haha.. anyhow, lovely people... excellent cars
(love the landrover, just cant afford one) My mitsubishi (2001 3.2 TDI >400.000 km on the clock) does the trick - i also use it as a camper, just not as sophisticated as you guys)
That sounds like one exiting yard 😁
@@JKoverland here is an impression - a dashcam vid i published when i drove in ice-rain on snow, and absentmindetly forgot to slow down at that crossing. Any other car would have been toast, the offroader survived.
I think you would enjoy it here :)
ruclips.net/video/FO66AkeZNKg/видео.html&ab_channel=zoolkhan
W😲W some bloody snow that' my misses would have a shitfit' an ide be like' nah its nothing we'll be fine 👍😂
One of the best vids, def the best one on snow. Can you remember what tyres you had on?
subbed :)
Winter 2019
I’m prepared for the snow 😂
If it comes 🤣
JKoverland
Lol fingers crossed 🤞
what happen with the car?Great video awsome ride along thanks for sharing.God Bless!!!!
Hi guys do u every use chains on ur motor as i use chains on my old ford motor she gose like a tank
No we don't have any! Could have done with them that night but it is so rare 😂
Buy some valve stemms, and air down to 1.3 bar.... you Will get double the traction and would have be able to plow through 4feet of snow!
Valve stems are great got some recently! Yeah it all happened quite suddenly 😁
This is a typical winter's day, in the U.S.A.
Makes for an interesting drive 😉
land rovers always stuck since the day one, they were designed and build for that :))
110 pooled me here guess ill stay
Why would anyone venture out in those conditions without proper winter tyres? All those “normal” cars could have got through it if they weren’t spinning away on summer tyres
So the land rover left you at the Starbucks? Im confused,i thought you were traveling together?great video!
No we were not travelling together but met on that lane!
Can't even imagine what the people stuck in 2wd are thinking
You could have took some people to the town..
It would have been very unsafe to do so other than being illegal with no seats or seatbelts in the back and in such terrible conditions.
Thinking of selling my 16 plate a class merc for a defender looks like fun
Very different experience 🤘 off road time!
15:46 - Did you not lock the diffs?
That Landrover was someone we had just met there and then so I cannot say if it was or not. Our centre locker is always on when in 4wd in the Mitsubishi 👍
my diff is lock all the time now
snow in like sand let some air out of your tyres down to 18 PSI
You are right it helps a lot!
Weird seeing those English country roads look like my local Canadian ones lol
Hahaha it's extreme and rare 😁 good to experience!
The landrover should not get stuck if you put diff lock on
It was ice underneath the deep snow, can't always make progress in such conditions.
You could see the diff dragging through the snow, it was just too deep
It only locks the centre diff. If there is no traction it's not going to help
Now come to Scotland in the winter and try, the snow doesn't stop at your knee's
Haha would like to see that!
Going offroad when its dark doesnt seem like a good idea at all
We were a bit stuck for options that night.
It's great fun in dark just as it is during the day
Would not have the story then 😉
The Defender didn't seem to have dif lock on
Ah maybe I did not notice
Get some maxtraxx assp
Rehab Alternatives We had traction boards but they did not survive this. New one needed soon 😁
couldnt put my finger on the girls accent
A
16.08 minutes into the video; AND WHY HAVE YOU GOT THE SHOGUN IN 2 WHEEL DRIVE ONLY?? RIDICULOUS!!
It is in 4 wheel drive. On an open diferential the wheel with least traction will spin and the other will not, that is why you see only one wheel turning on the front axel. Just the way it is 🤷♂️
Center diff lock means you have a two-wheel drive. You need three diff locks for a full four-wheel drive.
But those do not help much on an icy and flat surface.
