The Beast From The East - Allendale Documentary - 2018

  • The Beast from the East mixed with Storm Emma caused widespread disruption across parts of the UK during late February and early March 2018. The Met Office issued a red weather warning, schools where closed and drivers found it almost impossible to get to work due to blocked roads.
Being the weather enthusiast I am, I was out and about with my camera, over the unseasonal weather, capturing the storm during all stages of its disruptive path. From combining this footage I have produced an amateur home video reporting what it was like in my home town of Allendale, Northumberland.

@@Padoinky Very true, some winters hang on through beginning of April.
Our winters get much colder in the U.S. than the U.K.
There was a bad winter storm in 1949 out west in the U.S.
I watched the documentary on YT about that.
The blizzard of 1978 was pretty bad too. I was 18 years old when that hit the Ohio Valley. We drove around on snow mobiles!

I used to walk 27 miles to school in 9 feet of snow at temperatures of -60f with a wind chill of -90f barefooted.
We were a hardy bunch but for some odd reason very few of us made it past the age of 10. Some blame the harsh summer weather where temperatures would reach +200f.

This sort of weather used to be the norm even down here in Kent. The council used to put snow fences along the sides of main roads at the start of winter to stop snow causing drifts to block the roads and some roads and railways would be closed for ages due to drifts of 10 feet or more and villages had to have supplies helicoptered in (yes really). I don’t recall school ever being closed due to the weather though ! Perhaps there is something in this global warming rumour.

Even livestock need shelter sometimes. I hope critters such as foxes sought some shelter, warmth and comfort in their dens too.

I know Britain isn't equipped for much snow or really cold temperatures, but it is a bit over dramatic with some of the names and phrases they use for winter conditions when speaking of weather. I remember hearing terms while living in London like "the big freeze" or "deep freeze" because it was minus temperature for 5 days. And they named the storm "beast from the East", sounds like a Hurricane. When you come from a country where storms like this are the norm during the winter months it all sounds a bit over dramatic.

People love to get their knickers in a twist - furiously clearing snow that doesnt need cleared - making a marter out themselves because they have no bread but have a cupboard full of other stuff they could use - the only ones i feel for are the farmers (and their animals) and essential workers like home helps nurses doctors etc

It's a novelty for most of the UK. We have snow every year but the momorable ones are etched in our brains. 2009/10 was a good one 2018 but 1963 and 1946/47 were phenomenal, I believe.

With this question, you are not from the US. The upper Midwest refers to a few states in the US; Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota. Your geography lesson for the day.

British people think the conditions are Antarctic if the temperature gets all the way down to 0 Celsius and there is 1cm of snow, it's pathetic and embarrassing.

What is pathetic and embarrasing is being sadistic over a country that is not used to weather conditions vs people who are used to weather conditions
