    Ah Veselka one of the places used to visit in 90s. Still looks same! Now while I personally love it people who born in Ukraine and other ex-USSR will tell you that food tastes different than what they used to - perhaps American influence. Even idea of apple sauce for vareniki which I like I never saw until visiting this place.

    • @JamesandKarla
      @JamesandKarla  4 года назад +2

      ilyaLNYC we are glad our video brought back good memories of spending time at Veselka. We definitely agree that the food they serve has an American influence as they create lots of new flavors and use ingredients in some dishes which definitely are not used in the Ukraine such as their short rib varenyky and their goat cheese and arugula filled one too.

    Terrific tour. Need to have breakfast at Veselka, grab lunch at Russo's and pastries from Veniero's. Keep our small shops strong!

      Karen Madden thank you so much for the love! The day you have planned is perfect! We highly recommend the blintzes at Veselka for breakfast and they even have a bacon, egg and cheese filled pierogi dish for breakfast. And of course any sandwich from Russo’s as all are made to order and then some cannoli and fruit tarts from Veniero’s! We are trying to help save these small businesses as best we can by recommending them to others!

    This was really cool to watch. I got to go to NYC as a special sweet 16 weekend (YEARS ago) and spent most of the time hopping from one restaurant to the next 😅 makes me want to go back and try more places

      the Word in Red thank you so much for watching and the wonderful feedback. We hope you can visit again as soon as you feel it is safe to do so. In our neighborhood there are certainly many good restaurants and cafes to try with all different kinds of food. Today, the NYU students came back to their dorms in the East Village, so it is good to see our neighborhood slowly coming back to life.

    Those sandwiches from Russo’s look spectacular. There’s nothing like the combination of mozzarella, tomatoes, and balsamic vinegar. Yummo. Great video!! I love seeing these one-off mom & pop stores.

      Cak 813 all the sandwiches Russo’s makes are extra extra good but our favorite certainly are those caprese sandwiches on fresh ciabatta bread 🥖 🇮🇹❤️

    This is so helpful right now so that we can all support small businesses! And thank you for calling them varenyky (Ukrainian) and not pierogies (Polish) :) Never understood why they call them the latter because the ingredients are different. Maybe because more people are familiar with pierogies or the founders were from Western Ukraine closer to Poland? Anyway, I hope people become familiar with the differences. Stay safe!

    • @JamesandKarla
      @JamesandKarla  4 года назад

      Sunny Days we are so glad you enjoyed our video as it made us so happy to highlight these amazing small businesses which are struggling to survive. We definitely notice the difference between Varenyky and pierogi as we have had both. If you have never tried the varenyky from Veselka, we highly recommend them and although some of them are less traditional and have uniquely American ingredients like egg and cheese they are all delicious. Thank you so much for watching and commenting as we really appreciate the support.

    I’m in the east village and this was great. I’m in Russos and Venieros once a week, trying to support these community greats as much as my wallet and waist line will allow. Going to hut that summer borscht if I can, looks real good. ❤️
