- ... in which I test out another relic from the early digital era. The Nikon Coolpix 4500 is a 4 Megapixel camera from 2002, when the millennial gloss was starting to wear off. But this machine is full of turn of the century optimism. Despite its aged LCD and sensor technology, it's a well built and satisfying to use, with lots of features.
And it swivels.
Well, that's great for 2002 but how does it fare over 20 years later? Is it just a nostalgic novelty now or can you make art with it?

Suburban photography needs more champions like yourself. The world needs to swivel away from glorious landscapes and embrace the art in colorbond fences and curbed gutters.

Very well done. Art is v possible. Things were moving fast & furious back then: Manufacturers vying to catch the tsunami away from film. Could it print 7x5 was a question. This one could and PC disk backup was normalising as we soon left looking at prints behind. Selfies were not such a thing so a camera designed for it was overkill for most thinking.............Then the smartphone happened and did to these what they did to their film forebears...............
Yes, time moves on but you're right. This managed to give decent output and has so much better handling than any phone.

Ignorance time on my part - never seen. or come across one of these cameras before. What is it with some of these early naughties digital cameras and great innovative design as well as good build quality. As always Mark you do capture great shots with these vintage cameras. What's next?
Thanks Tom. Going much bigger next time with a medium format film camera but I do have my old Canon Ixus V hidden in a cupboard somewhere that's definitely asking to be taken out for a walk!
Cool fact Im surprised you didn’t cover: Nikon made it a slow use camera to fit the original product designation of 4x5. It was when the swivel feature got introduced (after a design intern dropped the mock up prototype just before the presentation to Chairman Kaga during the semi annual Iron Darkroom retreat) that Nikon dropped the “x” and suffixed ♾️
