Top Filters I Have seen So far Aftermarket: Purolator Boss Wix Xp Napa Platinum - Same as Wix Xp Fram Ultra Synthetic Ford Racing Aimsoil Out Of All The OEM Filters - I've still still got a lot more to cut open so please be patient Motorcraft - Hands Down Hyundai Kia - Decent Quality Ac Delco low grade cotton type ends along with right next to stp and Fram Mid Grade Aftermarket - Wix and Napa Gold Purolator - Same as the 2 above one not better than the other Come in next Bosch and Penzoil standard Fram orange can is the worst by far but it's a cheap economical filter shouldn't be driven the 10k on the filter IMO Only 3k maybe 5k max - lots of people have had failures with this filter from what I hear I've never personally seen it but I think they're running the filter too long
The Napa Platinum is actually a little better then the wix, because its bypass valve is at the top of the can just like fords and not at the bottom of the can like everyone else. But I still like wix xp heavy duty filters the best. It's always seemed like the best balance between quality and price. If i would rank them from a quality aspect, it would be 1. Napa Platinum 2. wix xp heavy duty 3. Purolator Boss 4. Regular wix xp and the Fram Ultra Synthetic seemed similar in quality 5. Aimsoil is just a rebranded royal purple filter, that they have pay them the licensing rights to use there filter.
I put wix xp with fram ultra synthetic, not the regular wix. wix makes two xp versions, a regular and a heavy duty. the heavy duty one is made for trucks that tow and carry large loads, and so are made a little taller and are have thicker mesh backing and can to handle the increased pressure. similar to there racing filter but a little bigger. also, I am not saying that the fram is a bad filter, in fact I use it on many of my fleet light duty trucks, but the heavy duty ones get a wix xp heavy duty filter, and my busses get a wix dx filter. I mite of forgot to mention, i am one of three shop heads, at a school district bus barn.
I’ve used the Purolator Boss for quite awhile now and I’m glad to know it’s built as well as I thought. Comes “free” with 5 quarts of synthetic oil at Advance Auto for $33.99.
I just found this out. I already bought a small stockpile of Purolator filters separately but if they are going to give me a free filter for oil I already need then it looks like I will never use up my surplus filters which are already rated up to 20k miles.
Does the Purolator Boss spin freely on for you? When I did my first ever oil change, I used a Mobile1 that was suppose to be compatible with my car. I did “as tight as possible with my bare hand” and didn’t check it. Turns out there was still a gap about 5mm, resulting in an oil spill when I started up the car to check for leaks. I used the Fram UltraSynthetic several times, it spun freely on all the way until the gasket touched the engine. For my last oil change, the store sold out of fram UG, so I got a Purolator Boss. It was same as the Mobile1. Hand tight still had a gap. But since now I know to double check for that, I just used a strap-style oil filter wrench and forced it to fit all the way down. Is that normal?
@@krisswolf2011 sounds like the filter isn’t optimized for the application. If it flows well and doesn’t leak, it works but if it also fits well it should be simple reassuring feel and flush fit while spinning it on. Maybe there is a better part number for your engine. What engine and part number do you have?
Thanks, yes. Interestingly, I just started BOSS/ Purolator OIL(( engine AIR FILTER,I generally stay with MOPAR *& GMC OEM, last three years , moving to high DUST AREA.,…….). : last three Oil Filters( generally used NAPA GOLD PREVIOUSLY).. Unfortunately,be Ten years before I start seeing.
Every company should honestly use the grip that fram uses, it's such a nice convenience Also I have used the cheap fram and I hate to admit it but I ran it for 7000 miles and I know I shouldn't have but when I dropped it I didn't notice any big chunks of cardboard or anything come out, it wasn't falling apart but since then I've just stuck to fram ultra synthetic
I recently purchased some Fram HP filters on sale for $12.49 on Walmart’s website. They are for my 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 L. Glad you cut one open. I’m impressed with its construction as well.
Those are some big ass filters. I'm used to working with small filters for my Nissans. The Purolator BOSS seems like something I'd buy in more heavy duty applications. Thanks for showing the guts of em.
That fram racing filter is a beast! Very nice. I use the boss but I’ll be trying the fram ultra next thanks to you! Save some money and use a great filter
I have said this previously but your car parts are way cheaper than Australia we are being ripped off over here. On the positive side my local Toyota dealer always gives me trade price on parts for my 98 Corolla. Your videos are top class by the way, thankyou for sharing your knowledge with us.
If you notice on the Fram extra guard filter, the black sealer at the ends of the filter media really does the job, they just push the fiberboard end caps into the black sealer, which I think Fram calls “Plastisol”. I know people don’t like to believe it, but that Plastisol stuff is very tough. Thank you for making this rather expensive video. Good stuff!
Rating filter performance as done here by pleat counts, weight and how hard they are to tear apart indicates nothing as to differential pressures, contaminant capacity, micron rating etc. Just a minute number of the typical things filter performance parameters are tested upon.
At least one Japanese filter maker just uses the “plastisol” stuff and doesn’t bother with the cardboard. The filter seals around the center core anyway. The cardboard does very little to nothing anyway. The filter material is more important than the end caps. Trust me. Just take a look at any of the non drain back valve Mazda filters and you’ll see what I’m referring to. The Purolator Boss is an Impressive filter.
I remember being in high school and cutting open filters in shop class. The cheap frams back then where the worst. I have used purolater ever since because they seemed to be the best. Looks like fram has really stepped up.
Been using Purolator since the early '90s!!! Suggestion: instead of filming the time you spend cutting the filters open, cut them without filming it, then show the end-job, Fordman!!!
The Fram folks must know that the end caps must get the least abuse and pressure. Or else the millions and millions they've used over the years, would of brought many lawsuits, you'd think. It is definitely sufficient for your 3500 mile OCI and pretty good quality motor oil.. A buddy of mine uses them for engine clean ups, with a kerosene/tranny fluid mix or MARVEL Mystery Oil, says they are as good as what the Monkey Lube places put on the cars... And when he cuts them open, never has seen a cardboard end cap failure and sometimes they are loaded with sludge. Most folks have no idea what's on thier cars, they just pay the $40 plus bucks for a basic oil and a basic filter and hope the guys don't try and upsell them too hard!....Good Luck;Jethro
Meets or exceeds OEM specs, that's what I look for when I buy a filter. I have looked at the specks on some filters for old cars I've had and you buy one with the same threads and footprint that was longer so obviously had more filter media area. I usually just go with the original size and change it around 3K miles. I write the date and miles on the lid of the carton and stick it in the sunglasss holder or glove box. I once got a new Fram spin on filter and found the gasket missing when I opened it that required a trip back to the store to get a replacement. .
I too am an oil and filter nerd... I only run purolator boss filters on my ecoboost... she likes them. I used to run wix but discovered the boss filters. Man they have the right name for sure. I run wix xp on everything else even the zero turns.
Enjoy your videos. Lots of good info. Just wanted to let u know it might be good for your site to let your video run a little after you actually finish. Not enough time to give you the thumbs up before a different video launches. Not sure how the algorithm works, but I think you may not be getting all your upvotes due to quick cut off. Hope that helps.
i think we all expected that from the regular fram and i think your are right about the mileage thing. I think what it comes down to is what you said people trying to get too much out of a cheaper filter and that should probably be rated at 5k or something like that
That Fram Racing is excellent. Never seen one of those before. That Bosch is just like a Purolator One. The Purolator Boss is a great filter but I don’t know why it’s so tight in the can. So much so that when used, they always cut the anti drain back valve because it is pressed so tight against the oil inlet passages. They all do this. I don’t know if it hurts anything but it seems VERY odd.
I really appreciate you doing this - super interesting. I usually use the Napa platinum or factory subaru for my wife's crosstrek and haven't had any issues, though I swap them pretty frequently 3-5000k. Interesting that basic fram is all cardboard inside.
and the purolator boss doesn't even boast that it can go beyond 12,000 miles. I'd probably run it for 20,000 miles considering the filter. I had a filter element on my jetta , a purolator boss synthetic, it filtered very well, the oil was still decent at 15,000 miles running rotella t6 15w40.
I am going to go to the Purolator Boss. As we discussed before I have a Baxter Performance spin on filter adapter on my 2.7 Ecoboost and no longer utilize the factory cartridge style filter. I just need to figure out Boss part number compatible for the Motorcraft FL500S I am currently using.
I run the standard black Bosch since I discovered they use a super quality Nitril anti drain back valve. My car always rattles for a second on cold starts and it stopped doing it with the Bosch and so far that hasn't changed. I usually go 3k but I recently got a low mileage 06 Charger RT so want to make sure I take care of the Hemi. If the Purolator Boss does similar with a better filter I might try one if it isn't 25 bucks each.
Thank you for taking the time to do this and show us your findings. Always interesting to see. My question would be, how do know which media has the better flow rate?
Nice work. I always feel especially for keepers cars, oil and filters are relatively cheap, engines are extremely expensive. If oil starts to appear a bit black why not change out. My engines run like silk on ice just like I like.
Those all fit in the same category so you're perfectly fine using that one over and over again I think they all fit right in that very good Supreme category
Been using the "orange can of death" Fram Oil filter since 2014 on my little Honda Civic. Never knew why people bashed about Fram until I started watching oil filter videos. I never had any issues with the Fram oil filters. Then again, I change oil regularly at 6 month intervals. My 2001 Honda civic has about 220,000 miles and still running well (it's stock, no mods or crazy driving). I switched to Wix oil filters two years ago but still think highly of Fram. I think it's the driver that neglects his/her car or they have a heavy foot.
Thanks, interestingly I just put “. Purolator BOSS” on 2007/ GMC CANYON 4 CYL/ LS, //146,000::though used R PURPLE / NAPA gold FILTERS for normal long/ short term with MOB1 5W/30 full SYN…( oddly, “SEEMS “TO run bettor *& mileages improve ( ? Slight , confounder)……
Hey, I believe that all the high mileage filters are just a marketing ploy by the filter industry. I believe that the high mileage claim is related to the filter media being able to withstand the heat of operation or service life of the filter, not the ability of the capacity of carbon, sludge and other contaminants. The example I give is the K&N Air Filter, guaranteed for a million miles, but recommends that it be cleaned and serviced every ten to fifteen thousand miles. The thing about oil filters is they cannot be serviced only replaced. When a filter becomes so dirty and stopped up it can filter no more. I have a 2015 F150 pickup with the 5.0 engine. It has an oil service monitor in the electronics that can be checked. I am not sure, but I believe this service life percentage is related to the pressure differential through the oil filter. The oil pressure from the pump is 60psi and the after flowing through the new filter is 60psi. When the filter starts filtering, it also slowly starts to plug and through its service the oil pressure and volume leaving the filter begins to go down. Say the oil filter inlet has risen to 70psi to keep the outlet pressure at 60psi. When the pressure differential gets to a given value, the filter and oil must be changed. In industrial maintenance you change filters much more often than you change oil. You are dependent on oil analysis taken weekly as far as oil changes go due to the volume of in each piece of equipment.
Interestingly, I just went back to ORIGINAL MFGR ( MOPAR, GMC, ) AIR FILTERS: previously had some **three vehicles , * ( careful Cleaning/ relOILING),I got)** no problems/ seemed to improve performances/ NO KNOWN engine/ MAF ISSUES , in Northern Indiana… HOWEver :: super dusty , now in Helena Valley MT, to much chance of dust flowin thru , especially some Studies: & especially in my 4 CYL/2015 Journey , etc… Though i also frequently filters Change( easy , using NALA FOLD/ Royal Purple, *& now switching to PUROLATOR BOSS on both…some good studies on Boss/ oil life etc.
would be cool if there was a way to know when a filter is at its end of usefull life and in bypass ! i highly doubt i ever in my life let a filter go that long ! but ya ! go go purolator !!
Love the content of your videos and honest and straight forward talk about your findings but I have to ask one question. Why mirrored video? It doesn't matter that much but it's a little weird watching you tighten down the cutter blade but be turning it counter-clockwise to do it. lol
Just because oil filters say they will go certain miles the oil filter manufacturers always says follow your service manual change intervals. So that should say it all.
The Fram racing may be like K and N. Allows more flow with the trade off being less filtration. It's goal being saving the engine in extreme conditions.
K&N is so hyped, actually this test is not that good, a test should test if filtration and flow is good, Bosch is the best by far and its a lightweight (important for racing cars), Bosch is lightweight and guess what, the Bosch does have the most long filterstuff inside compare to all the other filters on the market into this size, its bc they are using a lightweight filter marerial of very good quality. Iam not amused by Bosch electronic stuff, but oil filters... they are the best.
Interesting that the Fram racing filter is the only one with no feature to grip the end with (hard dimples or rubberized coating).. I assume only a strap wrench can be used to tighten or loosen it. For me personally, I like filters with the stamped dimples so I can use a can cap with a socket wrench and extension. I've used strap wrenches in the past, but they slip on me...maybe I've just used low-quality ones. What do you DIY'ers out there prefer as an installation/removal tool?
I like the motorcraft because the drain back is on thread end for my 5.4 engine but don't like the it doesn't have the coil spring. what is the best thread end filter?
Makes me wonder, they never give mileage ratings on filters here in Europe. Most stores don't even offer different filters from different manufacturers.
Be sure to check your Purolator filters for open louvers and no cuts in the ADBV. The Boss isn’t known for media tearing but almost every other filter they produce has been shown to fail.
I've been using the Boss since it came out. I look at it like this, if you take a family out to dinner, family of 3-4 and everyone buys a drink like tea or soda, you'll spend the same amount or more on beverage in one night than you will on a higher end oil filter. I don't mind paying for Boss. I am getting them for $10.99 at Menards and the Pure One for $6.99. I don't race, just normal driving
I wish Menards would build a store around here. I always stopped there (and Fleet Farm) when I visited family in the Midwest, but we don't have those here.
Based on the fact that most full flow filters on the market filter to 20 or 30 microns. Less than that and you will need a much larger filter for the same flow. A lot of cars don't have the space for that these days. They do sell filter bypass kits that have an adapter that goes where the filter mounts. Transfers oil through lines then through the bypass and full flow filter somewhere else. I have the amsoil bypass kit. The 2 micron filter is quite large. Nearly a foot long and 8 inches in diameter.
Rich my dodge dealer is giving me trouble again. The new private shop uses carquest premium, which to my understanding is a purolator oil filter. Do they supply mopar for the Hemi's as well? I do like the factory mopar filter but they tried to rail road me on my motor vehicle inspection, I'm out of warranty and do not have the money to play best friends with them. They did not stick the fail sticker on so a new safety will likely cost me 30 dollars instead of 1433 at my dealer. The rear brakes are still good I did them 16k ago, ebrake shoes too. Anyways what do you think of carquest premium man? Seems like a decent quality filter to me I think it is a nice shop, I might change there after the MVI for regular oil changes. Thanks.
Even a Regular Old Purolator is probably better than "most" other Low Grade Filters, Except Motorcraft but it's $8 here and Motorcraft filters are probably made by Purolator from what i can tell.
Yes I also heard Purolator makes Motorcraft oil filters. I forgot who makes the original equipment filter from the factory when the engine is brand new.
@@FordBossMe The Harley Standard Filter is Rated for 40. Bosch is Rated for 20. Mine is a 18 Model with a Pressurized Filter. Not like the Older Return Line Filter setup. Only runs with 12 PSI. High Volume Pump.

Nice work. I always feel especially for keepers cars, oil and filters are relatively cheap, engines are extremely expensive. If oil starts to appear a bit black why not change out.
My engines run like silk on ice just like I like.
Time to build a mount for your can cutter.
Needs to modify an electric can opener, so it can open oil filters. 😃
I just picked up 4 Napa Platinum filters, once I use them up,I will definitely be switching to Purolator Boss...👍👍👊👊💪💪
Those all fit in the same category so you're perfectly fine using that one over and over again I think they all fit right in that very good Supreme category
I think we all learned , that Purolator reputation, is well deserved. Many brands are just marketing BS.
Even their cartridge style filter inserts look extremely beefy.
#1 ! Sounds like you pay for what you get. More money, better filter. Just like real life.
Indeed
Could you go over getting a bigger sized filter instead of the recommend filter for a vehicle? Oh and this video convinced me on the Boss!
First time trying out the Purolator and mileage Valvoline looks like a good filter
Do you have an opinion on the Wix racing filters? I'm looking at using the Wix 51069R for my SBC Gen 1 350.
I use purolator boss on my 2016 mustang gt 5.0 and love it with penzoil ultra platinum
I always like the way its going to be a waste of time looking inside the video and you become surprised to find the difference in them.
I think the fram ph line of filters goes back before there was high milage oil and high oil pressure engines. I bought my share of them in the past.
Thanks, interestingly I just put “. Purolator BOSS” on 2007/ GMC CANYON 4 CYL/ LS, //146,000::though used R PURPLE / NAPA gold FILTERS for normal long/ short term with MOB1 5W/30 full SYN…( oddly, “SEEMS “TO run bettor *& mileages improve ( ? Slight , confounder)……
I wish every filter had the sure grip stuff on it like the fram
Im curious about the quality for cartridge style filters is there less of a difference and is it where you can really get ripped off
Hey, I believe that all the high mileage filters are just a marketing ploy by the filter industry.
It doesn't matter that much but it's a little weird watching you tighten down the cutter blade but be turning it counter-clockwise to do it. lol
It's easier to record me that way I don't have somebody to hold the phone
There used to be over a hundred labels world wide and cross reference and base/gasket dimensions, thread size and outer measurements for all.
Drive safe brother!
My hand because I don't ever put them on tight enough to where I can't get them back off
I like the motorcraft because the drain back is on thread end for my 5.4 engine but don't like the it doesn't have the coil spring. what is the best thread end filter?
"service your stuff" Exactly
Makes me wonder, they never give mileage ratings on filters here in Europe. Most stores don't even offer different filters from different manufacturers.
Is the Purlator Boss oil filter for racing applications or normal daily driving? Thanks
If the filter is mounted horizontally, does it matter if the bypass valve is on the top or bottom?
Be sure to check your Purolator filters for open louvers and no cuts in the ADBV. The Boss isn’t known for media tearing but almost every other filter they produce has been shown to fail.
Old video but cutting open that Fram racing was worth it to me.
I have a GM ecotec engine. I can see right away if I got a well made oil filter for my car. Napa gold or platinum usually
Same as wix
Wix makes them
I either use purlator boss or wix xp looks like I made good choice years ago
I've been using the Boss since it came out. I look at it like this, if you take a family out to dinner, family of 3-4 and everyone buys a drink like tea or soda, you'll spend the same amount or more on beverage in one night than you will on a higher end oil filter. I don't mind paying for Boss. I am getting them for $10.99 at Menards and the Pure One for $6.99. I don't race, just normal driving
yeh cannot beat getting one of/if not the BEST filters for $4+ cheaper @Menards vs. Advanced Auto.
I wish Menards would build a store around here. I always stopped there (and Fleet Farm) when I visited family in the Midwest, but we don't have those here.
Would you mind cutting open filters from Champ and their Champ XL versions?
I just got to be able to find them
How about developing an electric oil filter cutting machine using the present cutter components.
I would like to watch a video how to change engine oil of police interceptor 2020 hybrid 3.3L because of oil filter location . Thanks
I swear when you had said this can is thickkkk I immediately thought of wobble wobble wobble wobble lmao.
Lmao
What do you think of oil filter magnets? Are they a good idea?
They certainly can't hurt. Just make sure you take them off before you throw the old filter away.
😎👍👍🇺🇸
Might be time for a new cutter 🤣👍🤙🇺🇸
Purolater Boss is my favorite
i would like to see what Carquest Premium filters looks like cut open
It says they are manufactured by Mann and Hummel
Thank you
The trade off for maximum filtering would be reduced flow rates. At what point does the reduced flow rate begin to affect engine lubrication?
Based on the fact that most full flow filters on the market filter to 20 or 30 microns. Less than that and you will need a much larger filter for the same flow. A lot of cars don't have the space for that these days. They do sell filter bypass kits that have an adapter that goes where the filter mounts. Transfers oil through lines then through the bypass and full flow filter somewhere else.
I have the amsoil bypass kit. The 2 micron filter is quite large. Nearly a foot long and 8 inches in diameter.
@@antonisautos8704 Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Much appreciated.
@@antonisautos8704 thanks, good info ………
If you get the chance check out mighty oil filters
10:13 I immediately thought of a filter socket attached to a drill would make quick work of that.
This is a round Can and has no places to grab
Thanks for going thru the expense of showing the average guy what they are getting for their money. Again, Thank you.
Yvw ty
I may have missed it but have you cut open a Royal Purple?
Its on order
When are you getting to the K&N filter? thats still missing?
It was ordered today along with others
You ever use the lab analysis companies for oil ?
I will soon
Thanks.
Should be completely fine with that filter
@@FordBossMe Thanks man. Watched a tear down and it looks as good as the mopar or better. Maybe they are the same one?
@@FordBossMe It passed today rich at the private shop, 34.50 taxes included for a new motor vehicle inspection.
I use a Bosch Premium 3330 on my Harley Sportster 1200. Never had a problem in 12k Miles. You need to check the Micron Rating.
I do lol
@@FordBossMe The Harley Standard Filter is Rated for 40. Bosch is Rated for 20. Mine is a 18 Model with a Pressurized Filter. Not like the Older Return Line Filter setup. Only runs with 12 PSI. High Volume Pump.
I might of mist it are we counting the pleats on the filters ???
Not on every video there is no reason to on these initial simple videos in this initial phase
hi from denmark really like your videos .... thought about if I could send a few filters to you ?? a honda filter which is made by purflux which honda uses in europe
Sure email brother poissorichard.rp@gmail.com
@@FordBossMe can not send you an email it says the address does not exist
what are your thoughts on K&N filters?
From what I understand everybody loves them but I'm going to cut one open soon it's ordered and on its way
The 1 inch nut on the end of the can sold them to me, so easy to remove
Is it save to use mobile 1 oil 0w-20 full synthetic oil with ac delco filter.
Sure it is but I'd rather use pennzoil Ultra Platinum or Valvoline Advanced Over Mobil
I did the MMO about 3/4 of a quart in my Corolla for 500 miles. Turned the oil jet black. Changed oil today. Did K&N Perfomance Gold Filter, with STP Full Syn 75k high mileage. Been following closely, did you do the K&N Gold filter yet? You can see the oil here, just checked trip had 582 miles with MMO & Penzoil Ultra Platinum. ruclips.net/video/wgNTX5qHBrc/видео.html
Like your info video except use the better Fram filter XG (xtra guard) that filter has metal caps, much better media and backing. The regular frams are cheap and I will not use. Keep up the good info your passing on to your viewers.
You sure get your moneys worth out of that filter cutter tool.
It's a nice one for sure I made sure I got the best I could find reasonable on Amazon

@@FordBossMe thanks for the link.
What about the cartridge style ones? I just use MANN
Yeah I'm going to get to them next probably
IIRC the Purolator Boss cartridge filters have a lot in common with MANN due to them being owned by M&H. Not sure about the Wix’s though.
I seen a video like this a few years ago where the napa gold filter had Finer filament paper in side trapping more contaminates
