Finished my chairs over the weekend. First project building something "nice" from wood. Plans were concise and saved me a bunch of time. Thanks Brad for the great video and super plans. I would for sure recommend picking up the plans and trying the project yourself.
Fabulous chair. And the cedar when you started applying the finish - aw man talk about a thing of beauty. I love when the finish is applied and the wood sings.
Wow you have all the equipment and you build it professional, I loved how you covered the holes. And to top it all a nice sense of humor. Awesome job👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I just finished a set of these and they turned out great. they will be by the fire pit in the back yard on gravel so I put some high density plastic skids, flush trimmed to the bottom runners. I used some timber lock lags counter sunk and predrilled to secure the back piece to the seat base just to over kill that connection. I also epoxied the seams where the arms met the chair to keep water out of those joints. easy build, longest part was urethane coats.
Those are some great looking chairs. I need to make me some for my new outdoor kitchen and patio and my wife just bought some new cushions for our outdoor table that are blue as well so it was good to see it with that color of cushion
#1: Great idea with the 4x4’s! #2: Awesome look to this chair. It looks comfortable and stylish. Amazed it’s just 2x4’s. #3: Stellar movie reference. “Over the Top” was bad@$$.
Nice chairs, I really like the style. My wife looked over my shoulder so once we move later this summer, guess what I’ll be doing. It will be a fun project.
Brad ... Nice build and a better look than the 1st models. No more lunch box planer for you I see. I'm jealous. I'm in western NYS and I'm having a tough time finding any type of cedar; western or eastern red cedar in dimensional sizes. The only cedar the local home centers (HD and L's) carry are 1x cedar boards.
What a great chair! My husband built a standard sized glass top table for our patio. I told him we need to buy dining chairs, but, to save on money, we bought lawn chairs. Needless to say, they are too short - even for adults! This chair is perfect and as handy as he is, I believe he can make them - perhaps 1 or 2 chairs a year? ; )
Nice tip with the playing card. I usually just use a layer or two of blue tape on the side of the saw as a thin shim, in hopes it will introduce a gap between the wood and the teeth, but I can see the card does that, plus gives the teeth something to rub on, besides my finish surface. Cool tip!
Nice job Brad! Those are great! This is funny, because I have 4-cedar 4x4x10' that I have left from a job that have been in my garage for like 7 years and I have been wanting to do something cool with them. I may have just found that project thanks to you!
Love how the chair turned out Brad and the design is really nice! I keep missing your "live" chat on Sunday now that the time has changed so watching a new build video was a fun treat.
Having the slats in the upright section fit into dados was a great design choice. A great improvement over having the slats sit on the face of the uprights
Hi Brad i love yr channel and your light hearted approach. Personally i prefer my arm chairs to have the base inclined/lower towards the back ( instead of horizontal ) as it keeps me in a more comfortable seated position pushing the body toward the back. Would your plan work with the base and back built at ninety degrees instead and then incline the assembly by fifteen degrees by lowering the back and securing it to the sides as you did. Paul from Australia
Brad, love the videos and all the hard work you put into this amazing channel. I am so happy you have grown to where you are now and I am excited to see you continually growing as a whole. Amazing effort on these videos, cheers!
Great video. Your back cushion does not sit flat onto your seat cushion due to the angle of your back rest. I wonder if setting a slight angle on the seat support rails to match the back rest would give a more relaxed seating position.
Love the simplicity of the design. Question though ...... for seniors having trouble getting out of low seating can the sides be made taller to increase the seat with out compromising the chair?
Nice build.... The finish is fabulous.... Also nice tip on splitting the 4X4. The wife already has this on the 'To-Do' list for once I get the raised planter boxes finished.... She is looking for me to build the planter and somehow work a chair on both sides of it...... (This will be a design change from my original stand-alone planter) edit for question: The cushions you used, were those off-the-shelf cushions, or did you custom make those?
Does the strength of plugs even matter when you've already got dowels or screws holding the joint together? I have experienced the same tearout when making sidegrain plugs but all that really matters (if you're trying to hide the holes) is the surface. But interesting finding nonetheless, thanks for demonstrating!
yeah, you're definitely right. It was more for demonstration regarding strength. The tearout was the main issue I didn't do it b/c it would have left gaps to be filled
Thank you for asking, Ben. I had a similar question, thinking the whole reason for plug-cutters was making long grain plugs to have a seamless match, or at least have something that will expand and contract at the same rate, so it stays flush over time. Never really seen anyone use them to make dowels with endgrain up before, since it's on the surface instead of in the joint, so strength doesn't really matter.
Those chairs look great. If I were to build some they wouldn’t be under cover. Would cedar hold up over time exposed to the rain or I would need to find a way to cover them?
Hi Brad, the chair looks great. I will add it to my endless list of projects i wish to make. I have a question... Using that "sealer" finish on Cedar. How do the natural oils of the cedar exit the wood now you have sealed it? Cheers, Anthony
Looks great. What are the gloss and satin finish? Polyurethane? I was thinking it would be easier to align things we asseble the back first and attach it as a whole to the base
Hey Brad! I successfully built a his using old 2x4s I had laying around the garage but I just went out and picked up some 4x4 cedar posts. How long would you suggest waiting for these to acclimate before cutting into them?
Good question. It's the orientation of the wood. Screws into end grain aren't very strong. But using dowels you have a long grain to long grain glue connection which is extremely strong
Any time I walk past cedar at the lumber yard, I just have to pick up a piece and smell it. The first time I did this when my wife was with me she looked at me like WTH 🤦♀️ is wrong with you LOL

The “Over the Top” montage really took it up a notch, great video!
The chairs are great, but the Over The Top reference made this video worth watching
Love the over the top
Over the Top was my favorite movie growing up! Great reference.

Hey, Paul. That design should work since the front legs are slanted. So you'll still have a place to connect the sides of the based to the front leg

@@karl_alan yeah and the other thing is that when I cut plugs it’s usually in hardwood which doesn’t tear out nearly as much as soft cedar
@@bs838 exactly. I've done them this way before without issues.
Love it! Do you think it would be as structurally sound to do an angle joint on the front of the arm so the stain isn't darker on the front?
Those chairs look great. If I were to build some they wouldn’t be under cover. Would cedar hold up over time exposed to the rain or I would need to find a way to cover them?
Cedar is a good wood for outdoor use as it's rot resistant, but it will weather and turn grey over time if a finish is not maintained on it
teak also holds up well outdoors
🤙 thank you
Why did you drill the dowel holes from the outside ? Was that by design ?
They look great, could you not have avoided the dowel visibility completely using a dowling centre point?
None of my doweling jigs are setup to make accurate angled cuts. So it would have worked for the back, but not the front
Matt Outlaw approves of your pocket hole usage. 😉
I didn't catch if you plugged the pocket holes like the others. 🧐

hey man, great content. Whats the link to the handsaw you used to cut the plugs flush?
Where do you get your nice lumber from in middle TN?
Nice chairs, have you ever tried outdoor Rubio mono coat on cedar?
If the plugs aren't going to match the grain, might as well use a contrasting wood for them - as you say, it's a design feature 😀

Good question. It's the orientation of the wood. Screws into end grain aren't very strong. But using dowels you have a long grain to long grain glue connection which is extremely strong

where did you order the cushions? they look high quality than what they sell at the big box stores
Beautiful chairs! How hard would it be to increase the height of the seat? I’m 6’5…. Lol.
Very easy, just raise the seat and probably the arms too by a couple inches.
Since you plugged the dowel holes in the armrest, couldn't you have just used countersunk screws? Or are the dowels just that much stronger?
I tried reading post to find the answer. But where did you get the cushions to fit? No link attached 😢
Yes, of course, the video is great and helpful. But let’s all be honest: the “Goin’ Over the Top” reference is darn near perfect! #oldschool :-)
