I grew up in Alabama and came to NYC on my own at 15 . Because of my accent I was frequently treated as if I were dumb in my last 2 years of high school . They gave me the Iowa test for educational development and I scored in the 99th percentile in all 10 categories , the highest possible score . After that they put me in all honors classes and I won a National Merit scholarship to college . I wasn't shamed when I was treated like a fool , I just laughed at THEIR stupidity and prejudice .

My son was treated poorly in our hometown of Arlington, Texas. Teachers kept saying he was going to fail and be held back!!!!
A life event all of a sudden took us to NW Oklahoma in the middle of his 5th grade.
The counselor wanted to test him, thinking he was Sped.... nope... he tested college level in reading, writing, grammar, editing, and spelling!!!
They were going to fail him in Texas!!! In Oklahoma, this kid was winning spelling and geography bees!!! In JROTC He got to the rank of cadet colonel.
If a kid whom you know is intelligent and tge teachers are complaining about him and calling you saying he's going to fail, do whatever you have to to get him out of there!!!

Real sweet tea is when you add the sugar when the tea is still hot so that it dissolves properly. Anyone who argues that there is no difference Shouldn't be allowed in any other conversation going forward.

    • @cobrag0318
      @cobrag0318 5 месяцев назад +13

Right, you can add sugar at the table, and empty the little tray on the table of it's packets and stir and stir and stir, and your tea will only be slightly sweet with a mess load grains still at the bottom. The only way to cure unsweet tea that's already been cold is by making simple syrup and mixing that in. But who's gonna ask for steaming hot water, grab all the sugar and mix in that, and then mix that into their tea at the table? When I went on a training trip to green bay, I was halfway tempted. Fortunately, I saw they had a texas roadhouse, which had legit sweet tea. That bottled/canned crap they sell in stores is nasty too. Though Milo's is decent.

Real sweet tea in south Louisiana is where you make a simple syrup and then add it to the brewed tea.

Say, if they've done something sweet or such. Also, I saw in one of your other videos, testing knowledge of accents. The person who gave a Latino accent for Florida's accent was totally not true. The Latino accent is mostly around the Miami area. For the most part, most of us Floridians in the rest of the State, have the typical southern drawl! It's great that you want to learn so much about the USA. I was blessed being born here, and we have a country full of amazing people, and I wouldn't live anywhere else! This was definitely true for me. What broke me out of it was the show Farscape. When the main character got excited or emotional, he would speak with a southern drawl. Then, when he would do something brilliant, I was always surprised, and realized I forgot he was a pre-eminent Astro-physicist. When I analyzed why his brilliance kept catching me by surprise, I realize it was because I held the subconscious bias that people who speak with southern accents were stupid.

First, as a new employee in any workplace in the South, colleagues will come up to you and welcome you onboard and introduce themselves. In Boston, no one spoke to me for 3 months and they glared suspiciously at me. After 3 months, people started coming up to me saying" so you're the new guy". Also, I think they saw too many episodes of Beverly Hillbillies and they asked me if we had bathrooms in our homes in the South and if we wore shoes. I think they were just taking the piss out me and I laughed along with them but it just underscores ignorant perceptions. Also, final point - we have some of the most beautiful women in the South - sorry New England.

I'm a ham radio operator... nothing like talking to folks over the radio that have the deepest Tennessee or Alabama Southern drawls you've ever heard and learning they work in Nuclear Physics at Oak Ridge National Labs or are a literal rocket scientist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center or other defense contractor at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville. You cannot judge someone's intelligence or education merely by their accent. A good example would be Destin from Smarter Everyday.. he's a ham, a RUclipsr and an Engineer in Huntsville.

I'm a South Carolinian and the manners and Southern hospitality is real. Peanuts are a legume so "fresh" boiled peanuts taste like delicious beans. You are exactly right that if someone corrects someone else's child it is usually done because of the sense of community and usually done in a gentle way. I think only the Spanish moss that falls to the ground gets bugs, not picking it directly from the tree. Only the most humid areas in the South have Spanish moss, usually the low country going toward the coasts, and marshes and swamps, not the upstate mountain regions.

Greetings from Georgia! Over the years, I've lived in various regions of the United States, and I have to say the food in the south is hands down the best! And yes, manners are a must, and yes, perfect strangers will strike up a conversation with you, seemingly out of the blue. So no matter which part of the south you would like to visit, I really hope you can one day visit. And if you find yourself in Georgia, please let me know, I would love to grab a sweet tea with you! Cheers!

I'm watching from Louisiana. . ."Cajun Country "! Don't forget to wear lightweight clothing. It's so sticky and hot 8--9 months out of the year down south and bring a big appetite. If you do visit the South, I would come during the Spring months. The trees, flowers and bushes are so beautiful. Have fun and enjoy exploring the Southern States!
PS: you don't have to drink "sweet tea," you can ask for plain tea and add your own sweetener if needed.

Fun fact Texas ranch hands were the one to first make the smoke brisket and smoked beef jerky. The cattle own would keep all the good meats for themselves and give the scrape to the ranch hands which would usually be the chest and back straps of the cattle. There is were ground beef also came from.

I was born & raised in NYC. In my late 40s I settled down in a small town on the Tennessee/Kentucky border.
I love it here, not just because its beautiful but the way of life. It is true; people are so friendly & polite, even if they don't know you. It is absolutely true that people just strike up conversations with strangers. People will go out of their way to help you. I started a garden and it's close to the road, people see me when they're driving by the complement the garden or ask question... after a while I started just picking things and giving it to the people who stop.
Yes, sad to say, esp. people in the north & on the west coast, think southerners are stupid or racist or that you would marry your cousin or something. It is a very sad stereotype. But hell I lived in NYC for almost 30 yrs and spent time living in a few other states in other parts of the country, I love people in the south the best.
Yes the food is amazing, cooked with love & served with a smile. While chicken & waffles are good, they originated in the north. Fried catfish w/hush puppies or bbq pork is better IMO.
People not from the south will tell you to stay away from grits. Ignore them. They just say that because northerners suck at making grits. Get real grits (not instant) from a real southerner. With breakfast they are amazing w/bacon & eggs. Shrimp & grits are amazing. Cheesy grits are a great side dish. Try topping your grits with whatever-- butter, cheese, my daughter likes jelly on them.
If you can only visit one state in the south, my recommendation would be Tennessee. I had traveled around much of the US but had never been near here; I took a road trip & went camping & fell in love (and ended up moving to the KY/TN state border! lol). Check out the Smoky Mountains or go for a hike on part of the Appalalchian trail. Hit South Cumberland park or Fall Creek or Land Between the Lakes. Dollywood is a great amusement park. Some great cities are Knoxville (very artsy), Memphis (interesting & historic), and Nashville (for music & partying).
Small towns though are the best; especially the old quaint ones like Franklin or Leiper's Fork or Jonesborough. Stop at the Amish shops/flea markets for some amazing crafts or honey or preserves, or farms along the roads where you can grab some delicious berries or salad stuff for an impromptu snack fresh off the farm (they'll probably have some fresh baked pies for dessert for sale too).
Try to find old family-owned restaurants, barber shops/beauty parlors, etc. Going family-owned and staying away from big chain is best; It not only usually a great way to get bargains & great service but you meet such nice people and just hang out and hear great stories. Distilleries are great too, they usually give tours & tastings & have shops & live music and food trucks-- what a great night out! (I love Casey Jones, it's just right over the border in Kentucky near Hopkinsville, it's like a living museum-- and I am partial to that Kentucky Burbon).
There are lots of great Native American historic sites & landmarks, old Civil War sites, museums for presidents & other famous early Americans who were born or lived here, and of course, if you like Elvis, there is Graceland.
Best time of year in my opinion: fall (esp. October/November). The Smokies look amazing in the fall at sunrise. Springtime, March & April, is second best. If you come in the summer, expect it to be very hot & humid. Winters are fairly mild but we do get our occasional freezes & snowstorms around these parts where I live.
But really any state you choose to explore in the southern US has a lot going for it. Even Florida (though technically it's not really considered part of "The South").

I agree with everything apart from going to Memphis. I’ve live in Tennessee my whole life and that’s one city I despise having to go to or even drive through. Last time I had to drive through Memphis cops were everywhere something must have happened my husband and I just kept driving. I say fill your gas tank, grab a drink/snack or whatever, use the bathroom and just keep driving. I talk to people who live in Memphis almost everyday, for work, and they all say they are scared to leave their homes. One of my best friends husband works in management for Walmart and they sent him Memphis to set up a new store. He went in one morning and there was a dead homeless man laying on one of the shelves.

I was a marching band auxillary instructor for years (dance, color guard, baton) in the SEC. I have seen them all. I can promise you that any SEC team will give you an unforgettable experience. You can hear 100,000+ singing Rocky Top at Tennessee, watch the LSU Golden Girls show out (not to mention they have an actual tiger) enjoy an eagle flying freely over your head at my beloved Auburn, go between the hedges to Hunker Down with the Dawgs (and they usually have girls twirling fire batons!).......Old Miss and Miss State both have this really great vibe (I think that's just Mississippi in general).... you cannot go wrong with any SEC game or tailgate! Even when I was at away games and obviously visiting from the opposing team, I was often invited to grab a bite from strangers' tailgates as I walked through campuses.
In the rest of the US, people avoid talking politics at family gatherings.....we have to avoid talking football as well. Oh yeah, we have the BEST HBCUs as well. You have to see the Alabama State Stingettes perform live at least once in your life!
I think I can speak for all of your southern viewers when I say......Come on down; we'll fix you a plate, introduce you to Maw Maw and take you to a game. Fun one. Thanks for sharing!

NC native here. There are factors to the 'Southern=stupid', one is media. The other is the prevalence of hookworm (don't look this up if you have a sensitive stomach), which causes fatigue, brain fog, & can cause development issues in children. And in the South, look for the local sodas. You have to add sweetener to hot tea & then chill it or pour it over ice. 1 way is to make a simple sugar syrup (boil water & add sugar until it stops dissolving), brew the tea in it. Asking who has the best barbecue is a good way to start an argument. And there are 2 barbecue sauces in NC, both vinegar based but one has tomato sauce involved.

In my personal experience as a Northerner that occasionally has Southerners come into the store the reason they are deemed as “stupid” is primarily due to their speech patterns.
They come in and you go to check them out at the register and they look at you funny after you greeted them and asked for a rewards card or number. They then ask “what did you say? You said that too fast.” Add the fact that they take probably twice as long to say a word and pause more frequently than a Northerner is use to. It is easy to conclude that Southerners talk slow and can’t comprehend fast speech therefore they are slow in the head.
Not saying it’s right. Just saying that’s my experience and a common complaint my colleagues made.

You can also request half sweet half unsweet if you have a preference for it to be not too much sugar. I know they offer half sweet tea-half lemonade, but I avoid that just because I prefer those two drinks to remain separate.

You should definitely visit Alabama the next time you come!! Especially in the fall! I live about 30 min from Mt. Cheaha and it’s absolutely gorgeous here during those months. Spring is beautiful too but the humidity really can be unbearable sometimes. And yes, you are correct about the “bless your heart” response. Context is important! When I say “bless your heart” I either mean it in a “you’re going through a lot and I don’t know what else to say” or “That’s rough man”… but I use “Bless it” for the insults or the first world kind of problems. Lol I had a guy from Wisconsin talk down to me one time before. He constantly treated me like I was ignorant every time I spoke to him. Eventually I went off on him and told him “Just because I have an accent and I speak a little slower than you does not mean I’m some dumb, ignorant, hick that lacks an educated. That’s all it took.. after about a week of me completely ignoring him (we worked together), he eventually stopped me and sincerely apologized. We became really good friends after that. Friendly trash talk is fun and we usually don’t get offended if you’re just messing with us. But when you’re going out of your way to call us dumb… you better be ready to get your ass handed to you. In one way or another. Be respectful and we will literally give you the shirt off of our backs.

Three things that all foreigners get wrong are plain biscuits, plain cornbread, and plain grits. Biscuits and cornbread need to have lots of butter spread between the top and bottom halves while hot so it melts to the point of dripping. (Then add jelly or jam if you want)
My favorite way to eat grits...A little salt and pepper, mix in a couple fried eggs, crumble bacon on top then add a little Tobasco or Frank's hot sauce. So good!

Roadside boiled peanuts are the best. I’m from Georgia and have had numerous roadside boiled peanuts. I currently live in North Carolina. Sweet tea is ice tea. So you have to add the sugar while it is boiling hot so it mixes properly. If you add sugar to unsweetened tea with ice it is not right or good. You can’t really compare Texas BBQ with BBQ in other parts of the south cause it’s different enough that they are all very different and very good in their own ways. Also, you get more beef BBQ in Texas and other places it’s usually more pork. I use to think Dukes Mayo was the best until I tried JFG. JFG is #1. Duke’s is #2. Shrimp and Grits is my favorite meal. If you go to NC, SC or VA be sure to try Biscuitville’s biscuits. They are my absolute favorite fast food biscuits. They close at 2pm.

Sweet Tea is brewed as a concentrate with the sugar a part of the brewing process. So basically you boil a certain amount of water, turn the heat down, or even off, drop a certain number of black tea bags into the water, add a certain amount of sugar. And then you let it steep for a bit, and then when it's done, you add additional water to thin it out as you're making it for serving.

Descendant of southerns here… it means so much that you appreciate and respect our culture down here. While a lot of what Mark said in his video is true, I’d say that is starting to really only apply to the outskirts of cities, smaller cities, and more rural areas of the south.
With the influx of people from places outside the south due to economic and political instability, like California and New York, most of those people have come here and instead of embracing true southern culture, have shown utter disrespect for it and have in many cases actively tried to change us to be more like where they came from.
What really sucks too is that those of us who love who we are and want to stand up for our culture and ways of life, we are branded as racist and fascist by people who aren’t even from our home. The southern culture knows no race - it is for all who accept and embrace the true, good, traditional, and Christian inspired values that has given us our great uniqueness today

Hi from Alabama (having also lived in Tennessee, Connecticut, and Illinois). Regarding the accent and some people thinking that people from the south are "stupid" - It's a little difficult to explain. It's from an old assumption that has been around for many years. It's a negative stereotype of a "hillbilly," which is supposedly an uneducated person who lives away from civilization up in the hills, specifically in the Appalachian hills/mountains. It's an assumption of lack of intelligence due to a combination of lack of education, sophistication, savvy, and "proper" social interaction, as well as poor healthcare due to poverty. Partly, it stems from a very unique accent that may not necessarily distinguish between pronunciations that would have distinct differences in other parts of the country, such as the different pronunciations between sell/sale or oil/all; combined with a unique-to-the-south way of phrasing certain ideas or descriptions, sometimes with an old word usage, such as saying something like, "over yonder" or usage of regional words that might not be used elsewhere, such as familial words like "Mamaw" or "Papaw" for "Grandma" or "Grandpa." This is an unfair stereotype. I have lived in the north, the Midwest, and the south, and I love the south. I have found most people in the south to be kind, intelligent people, who would go out of their way to help someone who needed help. Of course, you will find good and bad people everywhere, but there are many kind, friendly people in the south.
The term "redneck" has been used as a negative stereotype, however, some people from the south actually call themselves this as a positive stereotype. Originally, I believe it had something to do with being a common (often poor) laborer who worked in the sun and thus had a "red neck" from being sunburned. Now days, it kind of has a more positive meaning of a person who is independent, who believes in southern/moral values and won't be intimidated into silence, who may or may not carry a gun, who may or may not own a pickup truck, and who can take care of themselves without government interference.
Regarding "it takes a village to raise a child" - in a sense that is true of the south, however, it is also true that your child is YOUR child, and there will be great resentment if the government or "educators" try to teach your child to ignore the morals taught at home - THAT is a big NO-NO in the south. Your child is YOUR child, not the government's nor anyone else's.
The humidity can make the southern heat (and the Midwest actually) very oppressive in the summer months. Also, the fall months can often be after the biggest summer tourism season in many places, so those are good months to avoid tourism crowds.
Regarding food: "Sweet Tea" - in the north means plain tea with a couple of small packs of sugar on the side. In the south it means tea that is infused with sugar, and sometimes with other delicious flavor options such as raspberry, strawberry, etc. It is Unbelievably Delicious, also fattening and addictive, you'll need to pace yourself on how much you drink. Different regions have different barbecue flavors and different ways of making it. They're good in many places.
Regarding which state to visit - That's a hard one. There is so much to see in the U.S. and every region has something beautiful and unique about it. Savannah, Georgia (where he was filming from) is a great place to visit to get a small-town vibe with lots of history and unique architecture (and more Spanish moss than I've seen elsewhere). Texas is enormous, so try to pick things close to each other because you can spend days traveling in Texas. Tennessee and the surrounding states are beautiful and lush - Nashville is a popular tourist area as well as Pigeon Forge, Dollywood, and the Bristol Motor Speedway. Look up what your interested in - such as hiking, theme parks, historical locations, natural wonders, etc. That may help you narrow down where you'd like to go. (Consider how you will get there and travel around as well. You may want to rent a vehicle, especially if you are not going to be in a larger town. You can often find maps and brochures in tourist towns (usually located in various businesses, such as restaurants or rest areas along the highway) that will tell you more information. Be aware of the nature around you. The U.S. is big and beautiful, but do not underestimate the power of nature - and there is a lot of it here. Nature is always a thing to be respected here, especially when you get away from the larger towns with people and resources that can help you. You may need to plan ahead, for example, if you are going to the desert or hiking in the Appalachian Mountains or visiting Montana or Utah in the winter. I would also suggest considering tourist trips at first, since that would help you with travel and you'd be with people who know the areas.) There are many, many places to see.
Sports - Baseball is called "America's past time" but really, American football is probably the most popular sport.
