Chennai has one of the lowest sea level elevation, next to Tuticorin, cudalore and other districts close to the sea level (including other states in India, has cities, towns and villages close to sea level). So no use doing all the extended drainage or big canal system as it will not work in cities in low lying lands. Depopulation and clearing overcrowded areas to another town or city is the only option (i.e. like moving industries and service sector companies to another safe towns and cities).

Govt should reconsider the new airport proposal at Parandur as it is a lake and green fields area to reduce the hardships to people in future from flood disaster and also restore the existing lakes and green fields as it is. This has been pointed out by experts in an interview which is very important to think it over.
Though a heavy damage has been done to the lakes during the last six decades by closing them and making plots by the various parties, it's still not too late. Chennai can be made water stagnantless city by reviving the remaining lakes around city's extended perimeter to hold the rain water during rainy season and thereafter to supply water to the GCC residents. Even if govt doesn't come forward to do, the respective locality people could jointly contribute and revive existing and dig more lakes. This will make us self sufficient and we need not depend on veeranam or Krishna or borewell sources. Think this is not taken up to benefit the borewell water suppliers in city who number more than a few thousand.
Great suggestion. But if we did that, we'll have Venice inside Chennai. Because so much damage is already done and greed of the real estate companies made it very difficult to find lake areas and resident areas.

Highly impossible for ex Velachery ,,you can't save or stop water going to pallikaranai and Velachery because geologically that's a low lying area ,,it's impossible to direct the water anywhere .. neither govt won't use anywhere to create a lake nor stop encroaching the water areas which are already done to maximum extent this is same in Chennai as well as Bangalore,,
Its a high time to concentrate in the development of Tier 2 cities in Tamilnadu such as Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Hosur, Salem and so on.

There was a big temple if walked to wards Danish port in the beach. Now the whole temple is not seen. The temple went under sea.
The sea also very close to Danish port .
It is natural in sea areas .

Underground water table is very important for this sinking Chennai issue. If we use and consume more and more underground water without any balance, it will result in sinking of ground which further fasten the process of sea water drowning Chennai.

Infrastructure and Cleanliness plays a major role in European countries to maintain their nature and still remains the exotic destination for the world. Chennai got a vast opportunity and economy to redesign such a kinda plans to transform. TN government and people has to co-operate on strict rules with paramount importance to cleanliness everywhere. Not even a single place in and around the city we could find garbage, if such a transformation happens, we can feel proud that we nothing lesser than Western countries. Most importantly the water resources like lakes, rivers sewage control must be in re-worked and maintained. If all these happens, we are definitely be in place to feel proud to boast an example for the entire country.

Chennai has one of the lowest sea level elevation, next to Tuticorin, cudalore and other districts close to the sea level (including other states in India, has cities, towns and villages close to sea level). So no use doing all the extended drainage or big canal system as it will not work in cities in low lying lands. Depopulation and clearing overcrowded areas to another town or city is the only option (i.e. like moving industries and service sector companies to another safe towns and cities).

This project you say will cost lakhs of crores of rupees. Government doesn't have that much money. People in low lying areas are super rich, rich, upper class and upper middle class people. They should move to higher areas every rainy season (November, December and January). These people are rich enough and they can afford moving to higher areas in rainy season.

As a Trichian we are expecting this but it will never happen, what is the need to set up all factories like, BMW, Royal Enfield, Bharath Benz, Hyundai, etc etc, it's not just one factory, it is supported by N number of spare parts and other accessories factories. Whereas in Trichy apart from a few central government factories nothing is there, Industrial estate which is depending on BHEL is almost dead, no orders and no jobs. The only job a guy can get a salary of 20k to 35k in Trichy is sales and marketing.
